4 out of 5 eggsUber light with the worst keyboard ever

Pros: Uber lightweight, fast, great monitor

Cons: Worst keyboard ever

Other Thoughts: I am no 120 WPM typist- that was my grandmother the court stenographer- but I thought I did alright... that i until I got this laptop. I needed ultra light and fast for my job as a landscape photographer, as I didn't want to lug around more weighty gear. It's a great choice for what I was wanting sans the keyboard. Within 2 months several keys such as "e", "a", "Enter", space bar and the right side "CTRL" either stuck or the keys literally came off. Also, the keys feel flat and hard to the touch, plus it's loud. I am going to try and get a new keyboard, but I admit this is a HUGE deterrent for me going forward- I will do more research in person before I buy one based on reviews.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow

Pros: Small, light, USB3.0, eSata, HDMI, great battery life

Cons: Slow, in fact the slowest Core-i5 computer I've ever seen. It's probably a combination of all the typical Toshiba bloatware and the 5400RPM hard drive. If you want to be happy with this laptop, get a SSD drive, install Windows from scratch and go through the pain of downloading all the drivers from Toshiba's support site. If you can't afford a big enough SSD drive for your needs, you won't be happy with this laptop no matter what.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba support is a joke. I called them to talk about what we could do to speed it up, and the first and only solution the tech would give me was to restore to factory condition. That's not troubleshooting, that's what I consider getting blown off.

I put an Intel 520 Series 180GB SSD in this thing (cost me well over $300) and it absolutely flies. If that's enough space for you, you could eventually be happy with this machine.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for me

Pros: NOTE: I replaced stock HDD with an OCZ SSD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227725

It's small, CRAZY light, includes a bunch of stuff (DVD drive, good amount of RAM, powerful processor, 3 USB), speakers get pretty loud, good battery life with removable battery, easy access to hard drive, looks sleek, outside cover is NOT a fingerprint magnet, very cool to the touch most of the time.

It can play Team Fortress 2 very well on medium settings

Cons: Toshiba bloatware was annoying, making recovery disks requires FIVE DVDs, screen colors not super-vibrant (but the contrast is quite nice), keyboard has a bit of a learning curve because keys are wide and narrow, scroll region on touchpad is a bit picky, fan does gets loud (but only when playing a 3D game).

Other Thoughts: NOTE: I replaced stock HDD with an OCZ SSD

I bought this machine as my primary computer for work/school. I plan to lug it around with me everyday for the foreseeable future, so it had to be powerful, light and have excellent battery life. In all those respects, it has succeeded marvelously.

As an added bonus, the laptop is VERY snappy (a lot of that is likely due to the SSD I installed, which was accepted with no hassle), gets loud enough to watch a video/play some tunes AND can run some of my favorite games without a problem (Team Fortress 2!).

I have not had any problems with the DVD drive (all five recovery disks burned with no issues) and while the fan CAN get loud, it only does so when I am really taxing the machine. Under normal circumstances it doesn't make a sound and stays cool to the touch.

My only complaint is that I often have to touch the "scroll region" of the touchpad a couple of times before it registers.

3 out of 5 eggsBroken on arrival

Pros: NewEgg offered to RMA the notebook due to the broken DVD drive. The issue is that the rails are loose and rock back and forth from left to right a good bit. This causes the DVDs to vibrate and sometimes skip. It also makes burning DVDs questionable. However I found out the problem is much less severe with thinner discs. I was using some old TV DVDs that are quite thick which exacerbates the problem. Since I am in Afghanistan I am considering living with it. The rest of the laptop I am quite happy with and shipping time from here is brutal. NewEgg even offered to crossship with a deposit but I am very dependent on my laptop. I'd prefer an SSD hard drivebut Toshiba's SSD versions are unrealistically priced. Hopefully at some point Toshiba will upgrade the BIOS to recognize SATA III and I'll upgrade the hard drive myself. I'm upgrading my rating to 3 eggs due to NewEgg's great service and since it appears to play thinner optical disks acceptably.

Cons: Use some quality control please.

Other Thoughts: Not a bad choice for a laptop if your looking for decent performance in a small package at a reasonable price. Intel graphics have always been horrible so don't even consider this for games.

1 out of 5 eggsBroken on arrival

Pros: Decent performance and battery life in a small package.

Cons: Laptop arrived with a broken DVD player. The whole laptop vibrates if you put a DVD in and it skips constantly. If anybody had even glanced at it they would have been able to tell it was loose. Zero quality control apparently.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat hardware, poor layout

Pros: This laptop has some great hardware packed into a small form factor. The processor is very zippy (turbos to 3.0GHz!) and 6GB of 1333 RAM lets you run everything.
The biggest plus: 3 USB ports! Most modern laptops have been skimping out on USB.

Cons: While the 3x USB ports are a great feature, Toshiba clearly didn't think out the single USB3.0 port. This is the only port on the right side of the computer, so naturally that's where you plug your mouse in. Suddenly, no more USB3.0.

The keyboard keys are quite odd - sort of a mock Apple keyboard. I found my typing speed is significantly slower on this keyboard than other laptops.

4 out of 5 eggsa fast ssd make this almost perfect

Pros: light, fast, 6gb memory. After switch to a 128GB SSD with >280mb/s reading and writing, this thing boots up instantly, and all the programs are loaded so quick. There is no hard drive click and not fan noise anymore. Get a good SSD, it will change everything

Cons: Not SSD, not win 7 pro

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Love the size and the way it feels. It's a fast machine and it's perfect fit for my light to medium computer usage.

Cons: I wish it had better sound capabilities.

Other Thoughts: Read other reviews here and i really don't find the fan too loud at all.
Bottom line is, you can't find a better deal at sugg. retail never mind for $750!

4 out of 5 eggsGood as a workplace PC

Pros: Sleek design and good performance in a small size.

I had used Satellite model months ago and that one had almost same keyboard; so I am very happy with this laptop. I purchased this as a workplace PC(VC++/Java/JavaFX programming). It has an enough processing power and is small enough to be fitted in a small place behind two 23 inch monitors. (I never used small screen for coding works without connecting 2 external monitors)

Cons: Fan noise.

Maybe mine is worse? Anyway, as soon as I received this, I put an SSD on it and it started running really loud when installing Netbeans, VS 2010, and windows uptates. Fan speed is about 87% and processor temperature is about at same % when installing massive files.

Then it returned to normal status after that. It would be a common problem for smaller laptop. I have reinstalled all Toshiba software but now I disabled them almost.

Currently, the fan speed is fixed at 36% and is not loud in a workplace...especially behind the monitors.

When I replaced SSD with original 5400 rpm HDD, the noise level is dropped but fan is also speeding up when installing massive files.

I think if you want to use this as an internet connection only, you may not need an SSD.

Other Thoughts: The SSD is a fastest solution but also decreases bottleneck when CPU is writing massive files that result in a fast-write-up and heavy CPU usage; it writes more files than slower HDD in the same time.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Machine

Pros: I own the r835-p50x which I picked up from best buy for $750 because I needed a computer for work immediately. This thing has been taking heavy abuse for about 10 months and it just keeps going no problem. The machine is very thin, Like almost ultrabook category. I replaced the hdd with a intel g2 x25m 80g and this machine was amazingly fast with no issues at all with video (my machine is the i3 version. I upgraded to 8gb of ram and just replaced the hdd with a samsung 470 128gb. I have no use for an internal dvd drive so I bought a slimline caddy and I have an os drive + storage drive set up. This laptop is my main machine now and it does everything I ask of it, somethings better than other but it is capable. Battery life is routinely 8 hours with light usage. For presentations and videos I get about 4-5 hours. I am able to do some photo and video editing. I really can not complain.

Cons: Ok here are some issues, the keyboard is good not great. The keys can feel mushy and require a more deliberate press, the spacebar squeeks if you hit the extreme right side which I often do with my thumb.

The case is solid but there is flex on the inside of the lid. I have been very nervous about a cracked screen. The plastic cover on the battery gets easily scratched. The hinges still hold the screen in place fine, however the cap is a little loose.

This is probably only a problem because I have opened this machine up many times but the ethernet port is a tight fit if you have a no snag cable.

The wifi card that came with my machine had no bluetooth can wireless broadband that I did not use. After about 2-3 months of different networks I was having trouble connecting. I swapped out the 6250 that came with the machine and replaced it with a 6230 installed the updated drivers and no problems since.

Other Thoughts: The one other major drawback with this machine is the amount of bloatware. The only toshiba utility that I find useful is the Eco utility for increased battery life, I have uninstalled the rest and it took forever. That problem is common with most windows machines so I am not going to knock off an egg.
