5 out of 5 eggsAwesome ultra book

Pros: super lightweight, great battery life, strong wifi, plethora of ports, USB3.0, fast boot/restore time, backlit keyboard

Cons: a dead pixel (they happen, not too big a deal), with the volume turned up loud i get a bit of a, "tinny" vibration around the left speaker, as already stated, the mSATA drive used is not the fastest available, 256GB of storage would be nice w/o having to donate a limb for it

Other Thoughts: i bought this in march/april after my last laptop hinge broke and i needed something light to take backpacking to europe. this little Portege fit the bill for two weeks in italy and was more than robust enough to be thrown in a back pack every other day. was able to make room reservations from the train's WIFI or tethered to my android phone while travelling which was a huge convenience. while traveling or in bed we could watch two movies back to back without the battery dying.

now i can even play DiabloIII on the highest graphics settings with no lag 99% of the time

this really is an impressive little machine and i've had two friends actually go out and buy one because they were so impressed.

2 out of 5 eggsWiFI

Pros: Light and fast. I have owned just over a month. I think it's too late to send it back to Newegg.

Cons: WiFi is a horror. It keeps disconnecting for know known reason. Then it usually cannot find anything to connect. This is all with a very good to excellent wireless signal according to my Android WiFi Finder App. It finds at least 10 router in the area and this Toshiba cannot find atleast one. When the computer is working it works fine but loses the signal.

3 out of 5 eggsgood but not great

Pros: Light, decent keyboard, works with Linux out of the box, tested on Fedora 16

Cons: Battery time is 2.5h max (with Linux on it) not even close to advertised 8h
Screen very fragile - you don;t want to carry that laptop like tablet cod screen gets damaged pretty quickly. SSD is not the top speed one

Other Thoughts: Like I said battery time and damaged screen were enough to return it - since this laptop got discontinued got refund - might buy Samsung instead

5 out of 5 eggsNice ultrabook

Pros: Bought this for my wife as she wanted a new laptop to start a master's of education program to manage her responsibilities between e-mail, note-taking, and presentations while traveling to different schools. So far, my wife loves the wireless networking and quick bootup times.

- Very light, my wife needs to carry this around with her to different schools and her college classes, so weight is an important factor
- VGA and HDMI connections for doing presentations
- Nice keypad with backlighting
- Fast Win7 boot time with SSD drive with enough space for her needs

Overall, this model seemed to maximize the best value/price ratio when compared to some of the higher priced ultrabooks. Will have to see how it holds up over the coming year.

Cons: - Screen has a decent amount of glare
- Keypad is a little thin, but not unexpected (wife needs to cut her fingernails ;-)
- lack of DVD/CD drive can be annoying at times
- decent amount of bloatware

Other Thoughts: Had issues with the wifi connection dropping out after a few seconds with my Netgear N600 with the Portege out of the box. Once I did all the Windows 7 updates as well as update the Intel drivers for the ethernet and wifi adapters, the download speeds matched our wired PCs through the same router to the cable modem.

Newegg still rocks as always!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Ultrabook

Pros: - Batt Life Lives up to expectations 5h to 8h depending on use
- Touch Pad Driver has option to turn itself off if it finds a 2nd mouse
- Boots into Windows so fast it took 3 attempts to hit the bios config key in time
- All Stock Linux Drivers worked flawlessly after fresh install of Ubuntu, aka no config changes to get the screen to look right
- Light as **** ... thing is regulation weight for an ultimate frisbe disk

Cons: - Comes with some bloatware (much less than I have seen on others but still annoying)
- If you wipe it and reinstall Win7, getting drivers through Toshiba website where more annoying to find than usual ... fresh windows install leaves you with no wifi or eth
- Confirm Very Slight fan noise when proc heats up ... its really not bad but I will list it

Other Thoughts: New Egg Rocks! Purchase this for $1100 price dropped to $999 while it shipped to me, New Egg gave me the difference with zero hassle.
*went and bought $100 worth of laptop accessories from New Egg*

5 out of 5 eggsUltrabook that's great at being an ultrabook

Pros: Toshiba understands what an Ultrabook is for, perhaps better than most other manufacturers. It needs to be light, thin, boot/wake really fast, and last forever on a single charge -- and when I get to a desk it needs to be able to connect to keyboards/monitors/drives/power without hassle.

Battery life is amazing -- I reliably get six hours on a charge doing office-type productivity work, about 3.5-4 if I'm watching streaming movies. Eco mode stretches that out noticeably, but I haven't used it often enough to really have a good sense of how much.

Ports are full-size and plentiful. Audio in & out, SD reader, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, three USB. Perfect!

The ports and good battery does mean it is a hair thicker than some competitors' offerings, but at least in my case it is the right tradeoff.

I do not have the fan noise issue that some mention.

Cons: I worry about the screen when it's in my laptop bag. Toshiba makes all sorts of claims about the honeycomb structure backing the glass, and maybe they're true. I don't have any plans of performing destructive testing on it to find out.

This wouldn't be as much of a concern if there were any halfway decent cases for ultrabooks on the market. Why there aren't is a mystery to me, most of them seem made for fashion rather than actual protection.

As others point out, the screen is high gloss and that can be a problem in full sun.

Other Thoughts: It's an ultrabook. Ultrabooks have tradeoffs. Toshiba made the choices that work exactly right for me. Thin and light without having to carry around ridiculous proprietary adapters or hassling with miniaturized ports or constantly looking around for a power outlet.

Your needs may require a different choice, and that's fine. But do give this one a look.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat portable little machine.

Pros: I have only had the laptop a week, but I'm pretty impressed. It does everything advertised. Boots quickly, its very portable/compact/light, sounds quality is decent for what it is, battery life is more than acceptable in ECO-mode.

Also, most reviews across the net speak about the fan noise when its on high as if its a screaming baby or 747 in the room. I did not find this to be true. If you have ever owned a laptop with an actual video card in it you possibly wont notice the fan coming on. With that said, it does make noise; I just didn't find it to be nearly as severe as reviews are making it out to be.

I'll do a follow up in about a month or so.

Cons: All of these cons are relativity marginal, and are somewhat expected when purchasing this type of laptop.

- Screen quality is so-so
- Terrible glare when the monitor is facing windows during the day and relatively hard to see in direct sunlight.
- Doesn't feel as solid as I would like
- SSD is only 128GB, so most will need some kind of external HDD if you plan to store lots of music or movies.

Other Thoughts: My only real concerns with this laptop is if the battery or something dies down the road I have to send it back to get most things fixed vs ordering the parts and doing it myself.

Even still, I recommend it for anyone looking for a portable every day carry around. You wont even notice you are carrying a laptop the majority of the time.

Powerful enough, portable, power efficient, and blazing boot and load times with the SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and portable

Pros: I think my first review attempt got denied for some reason or another. I don't remember what all I wrote, but this is a very nice laptop. Lots of power regardless, but especially when considering its portability.

I've been using it for photo editing, and it works like a champ. It also streams 1080p content to a television with no hiccups at all. Awesome.

Cons: Fan noise (see below). Touchpad isn't my favorite thing ever (the mouse bottons are kind of small / have an awkward frame around them), but it's very repsonsive.

Other Thoughts: Regarding fan noise, which seems to be the top complaint around the web (and even on this page): Toshiba recently released a bios update that updates the fan controller settings (meaning it doesn't come on nearly as often, and doesn't make as much noise unless absolutely necessary).

I think trying to post a direct url is what got my first review denied, but it can be found at Toshiba's support site. Google "Toshiba support," and it can be found under the Downloads tab for this model. (Released Feb. 12, 2012)

5 out of 5 eggsupdate - Z835 still great

Pros: Just wanted to add an update to my initial review of this great laptop. My Z835 has now traveled extensively with me and held up very well. It even served as my main home computer until I got all of my stuff in my new place after a move. The fan does make a bit of a steady whirr, but it's not obtrusive or more than I've noticed with other laptops. For the price, the Z835-P370 is about as good as the ultraportables and ultrabooks get.

Cons: None really to speak of. It is a bit slower than advertised by Toshiba to restart from sleep (usually taking between 6 and 10 seconds), but still faster than most spinning-hard drive laptops I've recently tried.

Other Thoughts: Worth a look if you're in the market for an up-to-date, well priced ultraportable -- and it's the lightest (and, except for the Mac Air) probably best-looking option out there.

2 out of 5 eggsAmazing, Shock

Pros: What a gorgeous, smaller laptop. Very light, outstanding feel to it. Very fast, I could go on about everything that it was......see cons.

Cons: but alas the fan/HD something, made a very audible hum/whine that the Mrs.said NO WAY I am going to deal with that, so back it went to Newegg.

Other Thoughts: I was truly saddened by having to return this great little computer. I would buy another one when I am assured they have the fan/hd noise under control. I looked on the web and found many complaints about this...not so many in feedback however ...strange ?
