TOSHIBA U845W-S410 14.4"
The Toshiba U845W-S410

Ultra stylish from every angle, the Toshiba Satellite U845W Ultrabook (Model #U845W-S410) is designed with both movie enthusiasts and productivity power users in mind. Thin and light, yet sturdy and elegant, the U845W is precisely constructed of machined aluminum with a luxurious soft-touch trim for sophisticated styling. This entertainment-optimized Satellite U845W is the first Ultrabook of its kind to feature a 14.4-inch diagonal ultra wide-HD TruBrite display with a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio.

Ideally suited for movie buffs looking to enjoy 2.35:1 movies in their original format – without black bars commonly seen on most laptop displays – the distinctive display is also ideal for multitasking, providing more space for better split-screen viewing of Office apps, streaming video, social networking, browsing, and more.

Ultra thin, ultra responsive and ultra sleek, this highly portable laptop offers the robust performance of the latest 3rd generation Intel Core i5 processor with quick starts from resume to get you from zero to flat-out faster, along with over eight hours of battery life to give you more unplugged freedom.

It's equipped with a 500GB hard drive that's complemented by a 16GB solid state disk. And with Toshiba High-Speed Start and Intel Rapid Start Technology, you can be sure your desktop and programs are up and running right where you left off – in a flash. It also features a super-speed USB 3.0 port – the latest development in USB data transfer technology. In addition to quicker transfer speeds, your USB 3.0-enabled devices won't require a separate power cable either, unlike eSATA technology.

The U845 Ultrabook is also pre-loaded with exclusive Toshiba software, including Bulletin Board (for desktop organization), Media Controller (for sharing media), and ReelTime (a graphical search utility)

3 out of 5 eggsGood basic, nothing special

Pros: The Memory, HDD space and 3.0 USB x 3 and backlet LED keyboard are real pros. The battery life is good as well. Great Ultrabook for basic use.

Cons: Overheats something fierce considering the location of the ventilation is in the back, when it opens the screen completely covers it. Thus the screen heats up, then the keyboard and internal parts.

Other Thoughts: If I only needed a computer to check e-mails and work in microsoft office it would work nicely, but using it to do much else bigger than that pushes its limits.

3 out of 5 eggsToshiba U845B-S400

Pros: Fast as most desktops. Print and video are flawless.

Cons: The non-standard resolution truncates the bottom of files. I hooked it up to a 23" widescreen and the problem didn't go away although, of course, the print was much larger. The print on the laptop is small. The CPU runs unbelievably hot. Even though I have the laptop over a powerful two fan setup that runs on AC, it still is around 53C. Turn the fans off and it heads up to around 67C. The manufacturer warns users not to let your skin or clothing touch the bottom so you certainly can't use it on your lap.

Other Thoughts: If you keep good fans under it and don't try to read fine print, it's a gem. Heat and non-standard resolution can be a problem. Given the price that I paid for it, I'll happily accept the problems.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Ultrabook

Pros: This is a very sleek looking Ultrabook. I was after something small, lightweight and very quiet. This surpassed all of my expectations. The rubber feet on the bottom are very nice and grip on well to my plastic laptop side table on a pretty high tilt.

The backlit keypad is perfect for my low lit living room and comes in great handy.

The fan... well, you would never know it was there if you didn't put your ear up to the back of it or stick your hand on the vent. I thought it was fanless but it's not.

Cons: While the laptop over all is great, it lacks a few things. No CD/BluRay drive and no number pad. I understand you have to sacrifice some things to make it smaller and I have no issues with it but it would be nice to have at-least a CD drive.

Bloatware. It comes packed with Norton utilities and other useless startup "tools". Forget about reformatting as there is no CD drive. You have to use a thumb drive or know what your doing and do a restore.

The touchpad is horrible. I am a very tech savvy guy and I have had dozens of laptops and built many desktops in my days. This Ultrabook would get 5 eggs if it were not for the touchpad. The clicker buttons are built into the pad making it one whole touchpad. This causes confusion with the touch pad when doing thins like dragging icons, highlighting text or moving tabs on your browser.

If your a big muti tasker like myself, find yourself a nice little mouse to go along with this Ultrabook. Otherwise suffer the doom of the touchpad! ;)

Other Thoughts: Overall, I really enjoy the Ultrabook. I am using it to it's fullest extent and have had no issues other than the touchpad.

If your looking for a sleek looking Ultrabook that is super quiet, light weight and thin. This is for you. And it packs the power to do other multi tasking abilities. I have not tested gaming on this but I don't trust gaming on any portable pc, ultrabook or laptop due to heating issues.

5 out of 5 eggsGood purchase

Pros: Super fast multi-core, very little bloatware (the desktop was empty), nice standard back-lit keyboard w/o typical stupid Toshiba numeric keypad on right side (yes!) Nice and thin, DOESN'T run hot. Nice speakers, SD card slot, 3 USB 3.0! Comes pre-loaded with Google Chrome which is the one I use. I got 5 years out of my last Toshiba laptop, hoping to get 5 years out of this one. I bought this solely based on review that is posted- glad I did. I wasn't sure I would like the 14.4" screen compared to my last 15.6, but it's not that bad. I was a little worried I wasn't going to like this, but once it came in I have been satisfied. Other reviews have said 6 hour battery life so we'll see.

Cons: No DVD/CD drive (the laptop is too thin) which sucks I didn't find out until I already payed for it! If your going to use this laptop for movies you will need an external DVD drive. No facial recognition software that I've found like the Toshiba website said is included. Screen a little short height-wise, No volume dial on front of laptop like my last Toshiba had. Other reviews complain about the Intel graphics card, but I'm not a gamer so It really doesn't matter to me.

Other Thoughts: This was my first order, fast shipper but I wish I would have shopped first around I would have saved money ($150-200). Too bad a "price match" guarantee isn't offered!

5 out of 5 eggsAmazed!

Pros: Very light and thin. Bright screen. High resolution. Multi-core. Great battery life. Back-lit keyboard. Comprehensive power usage adjustments. Fast RAM and large HDD. Light on the useless "Trial Software" that comes on all laptops now days.

Cons: Wide aspect ratio. The resolution is not a popular/common size which could pose some trouble for some applications. I like it for videos but gamers might not. This also made it difficult to find a case for it. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Other Thoughts: I've never owned a laptop before this. I have always built my own powerful desktops. Never had the need for mobility. Leaving for afghanistan, I wanted a small/light, yet powerful computer to take with me. I got exactly what I was looking for. Right out of the box, little configuration was needed and I have stress tested this machine thoroughly. I'm writing this review while running Adobe Premiere Pro (compiling a HD video project), Converting videos to my Zune from my USB 3.0 1.5TB HDD (Toshiba), Listening to music... and browsing the internet. Nice work Toshiba/Intel. Made a fan out of me! Hope this helped someone...
