4 out of 5 eggsWon't Admit It

Pros: This particular model Acer has been discontinued. Why. Only the showdow knows. However, the difference between 8951 and 8943 is 250G more HD. For 1.1K it was a steal. But I am outclassed by tech knowledge. 1st, the whole chassis is tight. I can find no defect. The screen...awesome. The video sect. with 1G ATI performs at 2-3G. It has never booted me off, blue screened or went DOS suddenly. The speed is great, however I will give some leeway because my cable signal rocks...just like the music on this thing. True, the chicklet board isn't laid out for a software enginner but it's solid and stuck keys are history. Don't be fooled by a supposed rocket geeksters. It is worth at least 1.7K.

Cons: It's a beast. This is a desktop replacement. Don't throw it your pack and go mountain biking. Sometimes the wireless gets cranky...no prob. if it haunts you...a $40 fix. Touchpad is touchy because they tried to install to many little subfeatures.

Other Thoughts: Acer has, does and will stand with HP, Dell and Asus. They are not cheap or counterfiet. Be picky but don't be lured by techs who are spoild and flashy expensive models with speed and space you will never need.

1 out of 5 eggsAcer-AS8951G -Buyer Beware

Pros: It is a powerful unit once you un-goop all of the Acer stuff on it. Unfortunately this dies nit help any of the cons below. Bought the Extended warranty hopefully it is of better quality and truth than is in this laptop.

Cons: The unit has the worst display angles, you must be sitting exactly in front, so its big screen is offset by the cheap panel used. It is the worst fingerprint magnet I have ever seen. Its controls are laid out in such a manner that no experienced user would want it at all. PROBIOBLY the worst is the fact that the screen feels like it will not last over one year as it is so heavy and its hinges so weak. It is difficult to open have no mechanism to open it with you just have to figure it out yourself and it is not easy nor stable. In the like model that has been discontinued they comments about its listed support for a second hard drive. Let me CONFIRM here that there is no hard drive support-there is a space where a drive to go but no connectors of any kind nor braces to hold it in. It’s simple it there was "support" for a second HD you would be able to put one in and be ready to go-this is not the case. I Would Not Recommend.

Other Thoughts: I think it is totally misleading information with regards to the second hard drive units-this was very important to me as a video editor needing maximum available space-instead you get a 750 GB 5400 drive I bought another drive when I bought this one to go in it only to find that there was no support for the drive-There is also no mention in any of the TINY bit of information that comes with the unit that mentions this "Second Hard Drive" support that it claims clearly in its specs. This is the biggest problem of buying online-I will not do it in the future. You save a couple of hundred dollars but you cannot take it back when you discover you have been mislead entirely by the MFG specs which you expected when you bought the unit. If retail, its just a return-or I find a site online that takes back a unit when it does not work as advertised. Even though NE always says they are not responsible for specs-they should be.

5 out of 5 eggsExceeded expectations

Pros: Fantastic screen, very comfortable and responsive keyboard, nice sound for a laptop, holds 16GB of RAM, 8 logical core processor and surprisingly well balanced for an 8.5lb beast.
Amazing battery life for having such a large screen! I use the fingerprint reader more than I expected.
Overall a gorgeous machine.
Glossy screen is a con if you work outside, but I personally love a glossy screen.

Cons: The removable touchpad/remote is just hokey. I use this for work, not for entertainment so I see nothing useful about this feature. Also the touchpad surface is completely unusable unless your finger is ultra-dry. Leave the sticker on the touchpad and it's actually better. I'll look into a smartphone film at some point to put on the touchpad to help. Since I use a mouse anyway I don't consider this to be worth deducting an egg. Integrated battery is a bummer but looks simple enough to replace.
The touchpad button is HUGE, like 4.5" or so huge and toggles in the center, making it difficult to precisely left or right click with a twitch of the thumb.

Other Thoughts: I'm a senior-level software developer (.NET primarily - read resource intensive) and chose this laptop for my work machine. I immediately upgraded the RAM to 16GB (why not for $50?) and also immediately installed Windows 7 Professional.
Running multiple instances of Visual Studio(2008 and 2010), multiple browsers, multiple instances of Sql Server (2005 and 2008), Outlook, and various other Office applications and this thing is not phased!
I bought a Toshiba 18" laptop backpack as this beast will not fit in a 17" bag.
I did not buy this for the gaming capabilities, so I cannot review the video card.
Don't buy this for the webcam. It works OK but I don't consider it an impressive feature.
