4 out of 5 eggsOverall a good laptop for the price

Pros: Basically it is a standard laptop with the common features.
The processor speed is very good and it does not heat up quickly. 4GB RAM is sufficient for running either windows 7 or 8 with a lit bit of gaming. Inbuilt camera is an added advantage. There is a USB 3.0 port. Sound quality is really very good

Cons: It does not have a Bluetooth. So you need to buy a Bluetooth doggle. Also it does not have a dedicated graphics card. For the price of <$600 it's difficult to get a laptop with dedicated graphics card and i7 processor. Keyboard is cheap and couple of the keys popped out within a month of use.

1 out of 5 eggsScreen failure

Pros: Reasonably polite tech support phone service.

Cons: Non-functional within two days of arrival. I had it long enough to install firefox, adblock plus, and security essentials on the first day of use -- the second day, the screen was completely inoperable. Acer website had the model listed, but no available documents or downloads (bios, manual, FAQ, etc). Phone service technician was very polite and apologetic, telling me to mail it (at my expense) to her and they'd repair it and get it back to me in a week or three.

Other Thoughts: There are plenty of stories on the internet of Aspire models with black screen problems; bios updates are readily available for older models. I'm disappointed that there's not a simpler, quicker reaction from Acer for this, which they should be used to by now.

3 out of 5 eggsupdate on earlier review

Pros: had to RMA the first computer that I received. Have not used the replacement much yet (just got it this afternoon), but I have for the first time needed and experienced the excellent customer support that Newegg provides. Great job Newegg!

Cons: none yet on the replacement

Other Thoughts: looking forward to getting more familiar with this computer. the specs on the cpu are very good so I am hoping for the best

5 out of 5 eggsUnbeatable for the price

Pros: Well, it's certainly the fastest machine I've ever used. I use it mainly for music, movies, browsing, social networking, etc, and the i7 processor is pretty much overkill for that. But, I love it. The build quality and keyboard layout is nice. It shipped fast as well. If the 4GB memory isn't enough, then simply spend $35 bucks and throw in 8 GB. This laptop at Best Buy would probably cost you $800-$1,000, and you can't get one there with Windows 7 anymore... Everything is now Windows 8.

Cons: No back lit keyboard or blue ray player. But, not really a big deal for me.

Other Thoughts: Perfect laptop for someone who wants something fast for media and gaming at a good price. Won't find a better deal than this.

2 out of 5 eggsOptical drive is flaky

Pros: Good delivery time, well packaged

Cons: Not the performance I expected from an Intel core7 replacing a 7 year old laptop. Optical drive is picky about the media I used to create the recovery discs and then for CD-R discs I tried unsuccessfully to burn, giving different error message every time. Have just contacted Newegg with my issues

Other Thoughts: Have spent more time waiting for updates to install than I have spent using this computer.

2 out of 5 eggsWould I do it again? Probably not.

Pros: It's definitely fast! The i7 was very quick. I even swapped the HD for a Barracuda XT (hybrid SSD + 7200) which was amazing. The 540M is pretty sick in it as well. To date, do you NEED more RAM then 4G? Probably not, unless you play on running VMs/Hardcore Games/Photoshop. If this is just a media laptop and a gamer-on the go, it's excellent as-is. I mean.. Extra RAM certainly doesn't hurt. :) For me, I already have a bunch of custom built desktops I game on, I just needed this thing to run some of them in mid-spec. Which it did splendidly up until it had hardware issues. For such a big unit, it has a very nice weight to it.

Cons: Here comes the painful part. As much spec as this bad boy has, I've had quite a few issues in hardware. I'm a very cautious user, I'm sure that the bottom vent has more than enough breathing room. I use temp/benchmark software on the machine to see how the machine is handling the environment. When traveling, which I do often with this, I keep in in a securely padded location in my backpack. The first failure I noticed was the HD. This wasn't a big deal to me since it has a WD 7,200. No HD is perfect and I have experience with dying HD's so it's no big deal- not Acer's fault. I decided instead of RMA, I would just buy an upgraded one on my dime. Around a year after using it daily, I am no longer able to run games without it over heating. Of course, troubles arise a week after the 1 year warranty expires. So I decided to open up the case to dust everything out. I took about a day to clean all of the components perfectly and also gave it new thermal compound. It was a very minor improvement. The machine still works, but I'm not longer able to play any games outside of League of Legends in VERY LOW specs without it overheating. Most laptops, by nature, have a clunky design inside that makes the parts hard to breathe. I just don't feel like this machine was up to snuff when building. Another thing, the parts feel cheap. I hate how much junk is attracted to the cracks of the keyboard. Because of the design, it's much more than usual. I've noticed the wear and tear on the keyboard is less than quality compared to a dell keyboard or Toshiba. I knew that part coming into the purchase, since most Acer's feel that same cheapy way. So although the unit is light, it is also cheap.

Other Thoughts: I typically never buy "budget" machines. In this occasion, I just wanted something cheap to travel with that would fit my needs (Gaming as high of spec on as little money as possible). I don't really think this was the greatest purchase for me, since I am back on newegg looking for another machine because of the hardware issues after just 1 year. I wouldn't say it's entirely Acer's fault, I suppose it could have been any of the companies. I DO know that my next purchase will be by a different company. Possibly Asus if the reviews are still good for them. I am very disappointed with this unit. I was hoping it would last at least 2 years before I either wanted an upgrade or hardware failures. I suppose this is one of those "You get what you pay for" things. At the time I was willing to take the risk.

Something I didn't want to list as a con, since it is so typical to see in most high-end machines is the battery. Obviously the battery sucks in this thing. I only was able to use it for 2 hours at a time at best until it fried. That's perfectly acceptable to me simply because I knew I was always going to have an outlet and if I needed a unit to simply type things down and be mobile, I could get a much less expensive machine.

I hope this helps! Happy hunting!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Love this laptop. Bought this to replace my 2 year old Acer Aspire. It's quick. It's fast. I bought this because I loved my old laptop. Like the previous reviewer I replaced the memory with 8GB. It hardly gets pushed to the limit. I hope it lasts forever.

Cons: I would've liked red. Black is still awesome, though.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good over all laptop with excellent battery life. Has the new Intel I7 processor and graphics engine.

Cons: First scrap the memory. Put in some fast 1333 memory (9-9-9-24). Performance rating went from 5.8 to 7.6

Other Thoughts: Would be nice to have Blue Ray drive rather than DVD drive.

3 out of 5 eggsGood laptop

Pros: Light. Core i7 2670QM is an amazing processor. 4GB RAM is good enough for almost anything. I was easily able to open as many video sites as I wanted and open Word and Excel and it never seemed to slow down. Amazing choice for college students.

Cons: Screen could be better. Could come with SSD for better performance and more RAM for better performance. The main complaint is that it does NOT have dedicated video.
