4 out of 5 eggsFantastic laptop, worth its price

Pros: The processor, graphics card, and RAM make for a laptop that can play most video games without any problem, which look great on the 17" screen. It's fast and has quick startup and I haven't run into any hardware problems yet.

Cons: Low battery life. The tiny battery is lucky to last more than a couple hours on its own, and that's without running the graphics card.

Other Thoughts: I got this on sale, so I feel like I got incredible quality for its price. Other laptops in this price range might have more RAM, but the advantage of the i7 processor in this one is incredible. If not for the pathetic battery life, this would be a perfect machine, but if you're looking for this kind of power you probably won't be using the battery too much anyway. Great machine.

2 out of 5 eggsGood laptop but died quickly

Pros: Great display, not 1920 but saved some money on this 1600.
Very fast, boots in seconds. This is my development machine and it runs quickly.
Large but not bulky.
Everything was working so nicely, until.. See cons.

Cons: The backlight in the LCD died after only 2 weeks. Acer said it had to be repaired, not replaced! It will take 7 to 10 days for repair, and they wanted me to pay for shipping!!! They finally agreed to pay for shipping if I provided a proof of purchase. This is my business computer. I'm a software developer, no computer means no business. In a similar situation two years ago, Asus sent me an advanced replacement and that one was almost out of warranty. This one was 2 WEEKS old. This is my last Acer product.

Other Thoughts: Dear Acer,
I understand components fail. I'm an engineer, and I see it in my own projects. But when a customer has a product for only 2 weeks, you don't repair it, you replace it. And you don't even think about having them pay shipping. This is a nice computer at a nice price. It was my first Acer product. But because of your COMPANY POLICIES, not your product, I will not buy another product from you. Seems we both made the same mistake. We were "Penny wise but pound foolish".

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Responsive, Great Price

Pros: Very fast for my needs. Upgraded to 16gb of ram on the third day. Like most have said this specific one comes with 4 ram slots with a max of 16 or 32gb I believe. Don't believe the websites.. They'll all say two but it's actually 4 as this is an upgraded motherboard. I don't blame a lot of the sites I think this is just misinformation from acer. I called one of my wholesalers for Intel and Nvidia in the state and he said straight from the vendor this thing should have only two slots. Believe me I passed the info along to hopefully get some things changed. Anyway..

As other reviewers have done I've moved the 750GB hard drive to the secondary bay and inserted a 120GB SSD into the primary bay.. Works like a charm. Aside from no secondary tray(more about this in cons).

Overall everything tested great out of the box. I just installed Bioshock infinite yesterday and can run on very high settings and 1200X1600 with no lag . Nobody in my IT department believed me till I showed them.

Cons: One thing I was a little disappointed to see was that there was no drive tray for the secondary hard drive bay. I had to make a makeshift tray to fit from one of the parts laptops I have. It took awhile to fit everything in but once I had it done it was really no big deal.

Video card runs a little hot on Bioshock infinite but meh it's a laptop so it's to be expected. I might get a cooling solution from Thermaltake or Coolmaster if I continue to game on this thing.

Other Thoughts: I'm putting my final not necessarily con but not a pro here. If you plan on downgrading to windows 7 from windows 8. Be prepared. You need to disable some settings within the bios and even so it was a pretty rough time getting 7 to load from the internal rom drive.. It was very glitchy. I used an external USB DVD-ROM to do the install after so much trial and error. External rom worked great. Again this is minor.. Could have had something to do with my the 2 separate OEM copies I tried.

5 out of 5 eggsTop of The Line for Discount Price

Pros: By now you've read the specs..Fabulous! i7,6GB Ram(4 slots expandable to 16GB),750GB hdd(extra hdd slot for ssd or hdd) 2 GB NVIDIA RAM. Amazing..especially since you can upgrade in a variety of ways.
Performance thus far has been flawless (all necessary updates made). To give an example of the power , my last laptop took 1 1/2 hours to render 10 min of video, this machine takes about 12 min. and I haven't upgraded anything yet. Graphically everything looks great.

Cons: (none)Everyone complains about Windows 8, its a small learning curve and the desktop on it is pretty much Windows 7 so just work from the desktop.
There is 1 minor..though the speakers sound great they are low for my taste.

Other Thoughts: Great Purchase from the price ..check the reviews and specs you probably wont get this kind of deal anywhere else. Previous laptop and my windows tablet are also Acer, good products..bad customer service though.
Cant wait to upgrade memory and add SSD

4 out of 5 eggsInitial impressions - great machine, buggy software

Pros: - Price
- Sleek design
- Above average hardware

Cons: - Windows 8 is buggy
- Acer Live Updater slower than a snail
- Acer Cloud... I just don't get
- Windows Experience Index 5.4

Other Thoughts: This is a great, well built machine. After updating graphics drivers and Live Update etc, the scores are (.99 - 9.99):
CPU - 7.7
RAM - 7.7
Desktop graphics - 5.4
Gaming graphics - 6.7
HDD - 5.9

I've already reset the system once, after it bogged down to a screeching halt following my initial attempt to update. We'll see how this does about a month from now.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop until it breaks

Pros: Worked flawlessly (while it did). Great battery life, great power, never had any slowdown.

Cons: Approximately 10 keyboard keys suddenly broke after about 4 months. Laptop keys would initially become responsive again when the laptop was held at a certain angle. Then the laptop constantly had to be held at that angle. Now they're completely unresponsive.

5 out of 5 eggsThis amount of hardware for around $700?!

Pros: I needed a portable solution for video production and compositing under a grand and this lappy fits the bill (and then some). This thing has a 3rd gen i7, NVIDIA 640m (more on that below) and a full keyboard. Check, check, check. Now, other machines I looked at had all this at around the same price. What sets this one over the top for me is the fact it has FOUR memory slots and an additional HD bay. When working in After Effects, you need as much memory as you can get. And when you work with video, you need LOTS of space. These additions are huge in this price point. From a design standpoint, this sleek Acer is nice to look at and hold. Considering it's a 17.3" laptop, I thought it'd weigh more.

Cons: It comes preinstalled with bloatware--you'll see it when it boots up--it's called "Windows 8." Seriously, though, I gave W8 a chance for about an hour. After that, it became obvious to me that W8 only adds steps to workflows. Aint nobody got time fo' that! Fortunately, there's a solution (see other thoughts).

Other Thoughts: Things you need to do to make this a fully functional battle station: get more RAM and an SSD (I bought both when I got this lappy), move the included drive into the second drive bay and install windows 7 on SSD in the primary drive bay. PLEASE NOTE: you must set up Windows 8 BIOS properly to install Windows 7 (even on a fresh drive). Do a search on downgrade from windows 8 to windows 7. But basically, you go to the Charms Bar in Windows 8 and select Settings > Change PC Settings > General > Advanced Start Up. On the next screen select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. After making that change, your computer will recognize other boot devices (like a windows 7 install disk). It might be a good idea to make a backup of your drive if you want to revert to factory settings. Now you can put the SSD in your primary drive bay and install windows 7.

In regard to the NVIDIA 640m and Adobe Premiere: you can get mecury playback in Premiere with the 640m by adding the card to the opencl_supported_cards.txt in the program directory. Do a search and you'll find the detailed instructions on how to do so.

If you don't mind getting under the hood a bit, you can turn this thing into a BEAST. Get it before it goes extinct!
