5 out of 5 eggsStill working strong

Pros: Follow up to my previous review:
It's lived for about a year and a half now. Originally purchased 1/15/2013.
It puts some higher end laptops to shame with it's pure price to performance ratio.
I really like the black out function key that Acer put on the keyboard. Good for when the lights go out during a lecture when the professor plays a video.
With some upgrades, you can really unlock performance on this laptop to be something potent.

Cons: Glossy Finish is kind of annoying.

Some may not like Windows 8. I got used to it (Yes, without using a third party start menu). It seems we might get it back in the new Windows 8 update though.

Other Thoughts: I upgraded the RAM on this laptop to 8 GB (2 x 4GB) not too long after using it (About 2 weeks). It improved the GPU / CPU memory score by a lot.

I swapped out the factory hard drive (It was starting to lag down due to too many hibernation states from me shuffling from class to class). I swapped it out for a Crucial M500 240 GB that I got from Newegg for $100. The disk reads at 480 MB/s now, making it boot in a matter of seconds instead of the 4-5 min I was getting before. The old hard drive is tossed into my spare drive pile, as I still want the DVD drive / too lazy to install a caddy into it.

However, with all of these upgrades, the laptop ($550) with the ram upgrade ($50), and new SSD ($100), costs $700 total. However, it boots faster than my friend's i7 Sony laptop that was $1000 and is just a tad slower in CPU performance. But wow, this laptop is very good after all of the bottle necks are removed. I get around 2.5 hours on battery, up to 4 if I'm not doing much and have the backlight dimmed down.

Finally, I never knew this, but when I installed my SSD, you can go download and burn a Windows 8 retail ISO, then use the OEM key to activate it after one call to Microsoft. If I had known this, I would have done so when I originally got the laptop to get rid of the Acer stuff on it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop for the price

Pros: It's cheap and has a Nvidia GPU, which is better than intel's integrated graphics. Study construction, and has been working fine for me. Windows 8 does get some time getting used to, even after updating to Windows 8.1.

I upgraded the RAM to 8 GB, and it's working fine.

Cons: Windows 8.1 is a good OS, but it has it's quirks. If you don't use the start menu as much as I do, then it is a good OS. I do think I shouldn't have to install a third party start menu to regain functionality.

The finish is glossy and attracts fingerprints, but I'm not one to really care about finger prings unless they're on the screen.

The laptop is limited to 8 GB ram because of the Windows 8 OS. Windows 8 Pro or Windows 7 Ultimate would remove this limitation.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend upgrading the RAM to some 1600 Mhz or faster RAM (2 x 4GB sticks). It's about $50 dollars and will improve the performance of the GPU (Since it relies on the speed of the DRR3 memory).

I plan on upgrading to an SSD / a larger battery when I get more funds to do so. Debating on Windows 7 installing Windows 7 later on. After all, Windows 8 does come with the laptop anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine

Pros: Big screen, nice keyboard, fast, good battery life, great sound for a laptop, looks nice, good game performance, discreet graphics card.

Cons: A little heavy, but it's a big laptop. Touch pad is a little awkward, it's large and tends to get in the way a lot when typing. Using a mouse and disabling the touchpad is preferable if possible.

Other Thoughts: This is a great laptop for gaming, not the best out there, but very respectable, and value priced. The performance is excellent, and adding an SSD would take this over the top.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Computer after a few upgrades

Pros: Great Budget built computer, has everything it needs to play most modern games. After upgrading the RAM to 8gb, switching out the hard drive for a solid state, putting in an extended battery and "upgrading" to windows 7, this computer works like a charm, boots in about 17.5 seconds with my solid state which is absolutely amazing.

The Original battery life of the computer was about 4 hours which was decent, but I got an extended 7800 mah battery which is now lasting about 7 hours of solid internet browsing, but it will go two hours of gaming.

the orignal hard drive is used in place of the optical in a second hard drive caddy which is real convenient having the extra space and having all the main programs stored on the ssd.

Games are smooth and I have only had a few real good lags. The computer does have a warm point if you have it sitting on your lap but if you can balance it on one knee like me then your fine.

Cons: Touchpad inconveniently located, along with power button and the dvd tray button. The power button is something to get used to and isnt really a con but I think it should have been placed further in because for the first few weeks I had a problem with placing my thumb right there when pick the computer up and moving it and it would shut down. Though I got used to it. The dvd drive was always opening just from the slightest bump and the touch pad needs to be moved an inch to the right. Seems my right had has all this free room to move and my left hand has to stay cocked to the left or sitting on its side.

I fixed the cons though replaced the dvd drive with a second hard drive caddy since I won't use the dvd drive anyways, and if I do I have an external, and the touch pad is off and I use a wireless mouse. Its easier that way anyways

Other Thoughts: This is one of the best computers I have owned and I use it everyday for anything from browsing the internet to playing games. With my upgrades the computer is a true performer.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price... sort of.

Pros: Cheap. Quality processor, decent graphics card, decent keyboard.

Cons: Windows 8. Glossy. USB ports often don't work. The screen sometimes doesn't come on and requires me to restart.
I wouldn't recommend purchasing an Acer.. The price is tempting, I know, but you really do get what you pay for. :b

5 out of 5 eggsGreatest thing since sliced bread!

Pros: This laptop offers it all; great Graphics card, High speed HDD, and a fairly decent processor. As a regular gamer I put most of my tech through rigorous tests, and so far, this laptop has done very well.

If you are any bit tech savvy you know that there is only 3 companies that you buy from if you want great quality tech, and Acer is one of them.

Runs almost as good as the Gaming build I have, and starts up faster than it at times.

Cons: A few WIFI connectivity problems, but seemed to have been resolved with recent updates.

Other than Windows 8 being terrible, This laptop is top notch.

Other Thoughts: Iobit offers a program that gives Windows 8 a start menu button similar to that of Windows 7.

It may also be a good idea to put in more RAM as this laptop seems to want to run at 25%- 30% RAM usage all the time.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

Pros: -Excellent value
-Very capable of gaming
-Great keyboard

Cons: -Battery life isn't great
-Screen is ok, but it isn't at all bad
-Can get a little warm

Other Thoughts: Have owned this laptop for about a month now. It was an excellent value considering the graphics hardware, and hard drive size. The hard drive is a bit small, and it doesn't have a lot of RAM, but both of those parts are easily replaced. Windows 8 isn't as bad as people say it is; once you remove a lot of garbage from the startscreen, it's actually pretty clean and easy to use.

I love the graphics performance. I can play any game at medium to high settings without lag. The laptop does get a bit hot, but it does a very good job of dissipating heat out the left side vent.

Overall performance is very good, just don't allow Windows 8 to run its "maintenance" because it doesn't tell you what it is doing and makes the system run very slowly for about an hour.

There have been some reviews about the WiFi issues, which I have experienced. I usually fixed it by turning on airplane mode, then off again. There has since been an update to the WiFi driver and the intermittent connection issues have been resolved.

This laptop is an excellent value, and windows 8 really isn't all that bad. I would highly recommend this laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsDJ/Producer

Pros: Runs smooth, no hang-ups or problems yet. Windows 8 is actually not that bad. I just took the day to get used to it and delete unnecessary items from the start UI. I got this laptop for music and it runs Traktor 2 using the Traktor Kontroller S4 like a champ. No problems, lag, etc. I did immediately buy 2 4GB sticks of RAM though and haven't run it with 4GB.

Cons: Hard to tell where the touchpad is in low light

Other Thoughts: Overall I give this laptop 5 eggs, no problems so far and it runs great

5 out of 5 eggsPower for the $$$.$$ + Integration + GT 360m = Great Notebook

Pros: I purchased this notebook for my wife. You really can't go wrong with an Acer notebook in the first place. The ability to enhance hardware and have quality without the strict restrictions of black-listing is a beautiful thing in it's self. Acer makes upgrading easy on their products. Hands down, the price is usually very competitive with mainstream titles like HP, Dell and Sony.

The best part of this notebook to me is the bang for the buck. At $550.00, you have a mid-range-gaming, fast, media friendly laptop. Windows 8 can be learned on youtube. Seriously. If you cannot figure it out, there is an ever growing presence of youtubers that are showing you how to use it. I am not a big fan of Windows 8 yet (although I like what Microsoft is shooting for) but I will give it a couple of years for them to work out the issues as they always do. Runs very quick and smooth. Transition from desktop to start menu and vise-versa is tricky for those of you not familiar with Win 8 O/S. After you get used to it, it is just like playing with a tablet and the apps that are entitled to it.

If you have anything usb 3.0 compatible, like an external hard drive or such, it's nice to have that added feature. The webcam is better than low ends but not outperforming it's expected threshold for sure. The audio is nice and loud. Actually has a surround ambiance with the Dolby software integration. Keyboard is a big plus. Comfortable and pleasant. I use a mouse with all of my laptops so I am not sure how palming the mouse pad can affect the performance of typing. I just simply turn it off. Screen is supprisingly brilliant for a 1366 x 768 dimension. Obviously, the CineCrystal Technology has put a nice touch to it. Bluetooth is great and it's fast. (4.0) Gaming controllers and headsets are quick and responsive. Have not had a single hang up. The GT 630m is a nice addition. Very smooth integration with the intel 4000 graphics chip. Easily, you can choose the nvidia card to be your primary or preferred graphic processor. Or vice-versa. It plays Sky Rim on Ultra and max settings with some choppiness. Not bad for mobile graphics. It will certainly play SL for my wife without a hitch and on ultra graphics settings, SL can be pretty stressful on a graphics card. I have not used the VGA adapter and probably never will. The HDMI works great on HD media like televisions. Skyping, Photoshop CS5, Video calling, Free App Gaming all work like a charm.

Over all, I would recommend this laptop for just about anyone on an entry to semi - advanced level.

Cons: Nvidia GT 630m has some compatibility issues with certain programs in regards to gaming. If you like emulators, you might have to change your tastes in them or the plugins. PCSX 2 for instance, will play on my GTS 250 and my GTX 660 but on the GT 630m, it's horrible. Do your research before buying this laptop if you are wanting a cheap window into mobile gaming.

Some games are a little choppy. Like Skyrim. Parallel split shadow maps seem to be the culprit. When it comes to your settings, you may have to drop your shadow emulation settings down a little to enhance performance.

Windows 8 takes some serious getting used to those that are simple computer useres: if you want to just jump on a computer and have your old Internet Explorer and simple media files on hand. Just make sure you look at you tube tutorials in HD to help.

Other Thoughts: I can't really boast on this laptop. It is, for the most part, everything someone needs in a laptop pc which has a good price. It's not $350 bucks but your never going to find a mainstream dealer with these specs, power and integration at this good of a deal.
