1 out of 5 eggsRefurbished?

Pros: Was what I thought was a good deal. The original computer must have been fine. It was quick and the keyboard was full including a 10-key. The display and operation were fine up until the failure.

Cons: Nearly half of the small assembly screws were missing from the laptop. I never noticed and the display separated from the keyboard. My son, who is a computer tech, found that the computer was never reassembled properly, which is why the display came loose. The power supply port and motherboard were damaged due to poor "refurbishing".

Other Thoughts: I guess this is what I get for not inspecting the laptop extremely closely when received, but who looks for tiny little screws missing. If I ever again buy a so-called refurbished unit I will make sure to check every little thing before the warranty expires. It may have been tested, but it was definitely not inspected.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Absolutely the answer to what I need for the trips on the road, which I will be taking in a couple weeks to the west coast from Midwest area so it will get a good workout. Looks as good as a new one but price much better and it still had the 1 year warranty that you would get with new so took a chance and happy about it

Cons: only came with 6GB RAM so I had to buy more, but at least RAM is cheap for it

1 out of 5 eggsTwo Broken Computers

Pros: Pretty little computer. I had no issues with it (I wanted it for very basic use), and was glad it was a windows 7.

Cons: I bought this "refurbished" laptop, thinking that Newegg would have cleared it of any bugs, etc. I did understand there was a chance they overlooked something, but thought it was a low chance.
HOWEVER. I received the first computer, loved it, but the trackpad was broken within the first day.
I returned it for a replacement, which had a dead screen, also within the first day.
I would not buy this computer again, or any refurbished computer from Newegg.

Other Thoughts: Despite what I said above, Newegg customer service was very helpful and understanding, and I resolved the problem with them to my satisfaction. I now have a computer I am very happy with (I am writing on this review on it as we speak).

4 out of 5 eggsReview from a tech support guy

Pros: Some background...I run a small computer repair business and needed a cheap Intel laptop to take in the field with me. Had to have at least an i5 and USB 3.0 for troubleshooting. This fit the bill. It is very thin...thinner than a VGA and Ethernet port, which is why they provide a dongle for those. Multi-touch trackpad, decent audio, crisp screen. It's fast and light (at least with an SSD...see other thoughts)

Cons: It's horrible to work on. To replace the hard drive it requires complete less than 24 screws need to be removed, the keyboard, bezel, etc. Thankfully, Acer created a maintenance manual so it's not difficult, just time consuming.

Case is 99.9% plastic, which means many screws go into threaded inserts that are pressed into the plastic. These are notorious for coming loose. Left side of the LCD mount uses one of these that is already coming out, so just be careful. Construction is just low grade, cheap plastic components to fit price point. It will NOT last long being tossed in a backpack repeatedly without things coming loose. It just won't. Don't do it. Handle with care.

Windows 8 nor Acer provide the proper touchpad drivers (comes with Win7, which DOES have correct drivers). See other thoughts to correct this.

Battery is tiny and smaller than most other laptops, so doesn't last quite as long as others but still gives you a solid 2-3 hours.

Silver finish looks nice, but is painted on and WILL rub off. After 1 week, I have a corner where paint is rubbing already from going in my case. I don't care, because frankly I buy the hardware inside, but some may be bothered by it.

The i5 chip that's used is a low-power, dual core chip (like all mobile IB i5's) with hyperthreading and turbo boost. It's just a tick faster than the slowest Ivy Bridge CPU out there and is designed to sip power. It is not going to win any speed contests, but at least it turbo boosts to 2.6.

Wifi driver is not included in Win8, so plan to download the abnormally large driver to a USB or plug in via Ethernet. And give it 30 min to download, because Acer's download speed is ridiculous.

Other Thoughts: First thing I did upon receiving it was take it apart and swap in a SSD. 5400rpm hard drives Used a Samsung 840 because it was cheap at the time and size fit perfectly. HDD is thin, so needed an SSD that fit the 7mm thickness.

Next, installed Windows 8 because I actually really like it (though I don't use Metro much and installed Start8). However, Acer's touchpad drivers for Windows 8 on their support site are simply wrong. Touchpad is a Synaptics TM2134, taken from the touchpad itself when I had it apart. Go to Synaptics, download their Win8 drivers, but don't run...they're not signed for some reason. To get around this, go to Settings, PC Settings, General, Advanced Startup, Troubleshoot, Windows Startup Settings, Advanced Startup, and reboot. Select "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement", continue booting to Windows and install the driver. When it warns you about not being signed, just accept. You downloaded it straight from Synaptic. Installation fails if you don't do this, but you have a really lousy touchpad without multi-touch if you don't.

Also, Acer's driver downloads are incredibly slow. Like 2005 slow. I have 40mbit down and all drivers downloaded around 1mbit/s. So 4 stars because it's a sleek, fast, cheap computer with tweaking. Thankfully, so far I haven't had to use many of them (downloaded several to USB in case I needed them, only used Wifi).

Final note: for under $400 (with rebates, promo code, etc), plus an SSD, you get a thin, modern, fast laptop that just needs to be handled gently.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy

Pros: *Shipping was on time
*No tax or shipping Fees (wait for it)
*Machine looks and runs like brand new (refurbished)

Cons: *Honestly, no complaints

Other Thoughts: I've never given anything five stars. This has been the easiest buying experience I have had in along time. I received a quality product, delivered on time, at a good price. I cant ask for more than that.

Thanks Newegg!
