4 out of 5 eggsToshiba Satellite S55-5358

Pros: Does is job, and quickly. Core is fast, display is HD, body is thin and light, seems like a good deal for a fast laptop. HD display is vivid and clear.

Cons: Not robust construction, only 3 USB ports, The optical drive is so flimsy I am scared when it opens that the plastic frame will split. But, it works-- and doesn't break.
For those expecting an easy ride, please note: Windows 8 requires a lot of work to get up to speed at 8.1. Windows 8.0 requires 72 Windows updates (today--more tomorrow??) , then you upgrade to Windows 8.1 (whew, much better, but takes a while!) then install 11 Toshiba updates including new BIOS, another couple of hours to accomplish. But all done now and everything working OK.

Other Thoughts: I have the 5358-- It is shipped Free (nice!) from Newegg . I would also say it is sort of "cheaply" made-- which means in my mind they did a lot of cost trimming using plastic parts, but the machine and its guts seem to work as advertised. (I might have a fluky USB 2 port, don't know if it's the Toshiba or the mice--but I think it's the Toshiba) The display is nice but in some light surprisingly directional. But to buy a more robust your choice. I admit I am scared of dropping it; m laptop you need to shell out another few hundred bucks so take your choice. My old HP Pavilion survived two nasty falls and kept on tickin' and I don't think this machine would. But, all in all I am happy since I was not expecting a luxury machine. And in Windows 8.1, trust me, you can configure the desktop EXACTLY like an older version (I came from XP) , and never have to see start or a lockscreen or have to look at a "tile" save those for your smartphone. Remember to budget some time to removing quite a bit of bloatware especially if you are not into "social apps". I really didn't need the PC to tell me what to do or think.

3 out of 5 eggsGood laptop, poor construction

Pros: The laptop is great for business use. The battery is smaller but it last quite a while. The laptop is light which is great for traveling, and the hardware is on par with most other high quality laptops. (ie: Processor, ram, and other components). It does lack a dedicated video card but that is not a big issue if you want to use it for business and surfing the web. I wouldn't use it for gaming but I'm sure it could handle lower graphic quality games.

Cons: The construction of the laptop is poor and I'm sure this is the reason that it is cheaper than most laptops of the same power. When the laptop arrived the bezel around the screen was separated. There was no damage during shipping that I could see. It looked as if the laptop was shipped in that condition. I clipped the bezel back together and thought that it shouldn't be an issue. The laptop screen started showing issues. It didn't want to turn on and you would have to press on the bezel below the screen to get the screen to power on. It would also start very dim and get brighter after a few minutes, which didn't have anything to do with the brightness button. The materials that the laptop were made of were very flexible as well. I understand that the laptop is lower in price that others with better construction, but it seemed like you could bend the laptop over if you were to try. The track pad was also very small, glitchy, and the buttons were manual (I mean that they require a large amount of pressure to press).

Other Thoughts: I don't mind a laptop that is made of light plastic it decreases weight greatly, but I feel it could have been a little thicker. Also I feel it is somewhat unfair to judge the screen issues based on one faulty laptop. I was able to return it to newegg for a refund. I persuaded my clients to go with a better quality laptop that cost just a bit more.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer

Pros: Reasonably light and thin; easy to carry around.
Higher performance laptop CPU.
Lighter 4-cell battery (lower weight, but not as much runtime)
Compatible with hardware-accelerated bitlocker encryption in Windows 8.1 when using an eDrive-compatible SSD (IEEE 1667 and TCG OPAL 2.0).

Cons: The battery is non-removable (unless you are willing to remove a few screws) and is only 4-cell.

Other Thoughts: We purchased this actually as a business laptop as it was cost-effective. We needed a high-performance quad core CPU and wanted integrated graphics (for maximum power efficiency and runtime).
Additionally, we were able to pair it with a Crucial m500 SSD for hardware-based full drive encryption in Windows 8.1 (to meet corporate security standards).
If you are looking for a good general use (or business) laptop, this would be a solid choice.
