4 out of 5 eggsFun, I like, but can have issues

Pros: Affordable touch screen
Very upgradeable
Like new
Great warranty service from Newegg and refurb company.
Refurb guys are sending me a new battery without question.
Newegg was willing to pay shipping both ways to exchange for another because of the bad battery
Missing drivers installed without a hitch
4GB ram and still a slot available

Cons: Toshiba HDD may be inside
1 of mine had a bad battery
Other one had probs with drivers missing after initial setup
Wireless and 2 other drivers not installed

Other Thoughts: Quicker than other laptops in its price range.
Touch screen is an awesome gimmick for a laptop, but it's just a gimmick. If the screen were to lay flat and still be touchable like a tablet then it would be a great touch screen laptop, but as it is it's pretty much a gimmick that doesn't need to be there.
I have been working as a laptop repair technician for over 3 years now and have learned that Toshibas have the highest HDD failure rate. Make your recovery disks as soon as you get this. I know this and still purchased 2 of these when they were on sale. I will replace the drives when they die. I also keep a few 2.5" HDDs handy.
CPU is fast for a Celeron (2000 on Passmark Performance test 8) Older Celerons were lucky if they scored 600.
Not sure, but I think the CPU socket can take the 3rd Gen Ivy bridge processor all the way up to i7.

All in all, a great deal while on sale. Maybe even at full price if they had a full yr warranty included or were new and not refurbs. I am happy with both of them so far.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Full-sized keyboard and numbers keypad, touchscreen, Toshiba quality

Cons: Battery life, hard to read F keys, terrible viewing angle.

Other Thoughts: I'm very pleased with this laptop. I wanted something to replace my desktop and tablet (a Toshiba Thrive). This does the job for me, personally. I must note that I ordered a 120gb Samsung SSD to upgrade the laptop upon arrival. I only worked with the stock computer long enough to clone the HDD to the SSD. It worked just fine and was smooth and easy to setup. Once the SSD was in and an additional 2gb of memory installed (comes with one 4gb stick and one open slot), the machine is very fast and operates smoothly for what I use it for. Mainly, high productivity software and standard web browsing, email and Win 8 games.

I also use it to stream movies through various services such as Netflix, Epix, etc. It does so without any problem at all. One knock against watching movies is the viewing angle. You have to be virtually straight on to see it correctly. Any deviation (left, right, up, down) causes the images to wash out or virtually disappear. Fortunately, I prefer using the HDMI out to a HDTV for movies and shows.

I don't know how this would do for gaming, but I don't have any interest in gaming and didn't buy it for that.

I'm a bit disappointed with the battery life. Even with an SSD which uses far less energy and runs cooler so the fan runs less, I get about 4 hours on a charge. This is a probably the only detail that reminds me this is a refurb and not new. Still, I use this like a desktop and it's plugged in most of the time.

The function keys are very hard to read. The function they perform with the FN key overshadows the blue on black imprint for F1 - F12. I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts and I'm less than pleased with this. In time I will probably adjust to them.

The sound from the speakers is decent enough for dialogue. Music is a different story. No big deal. I was not expecting much from laptop speakers at this price point. However, I was disappointed with the sound when I hooked up a set of external 5.1 speakers w/subwoofer. There was no bass. Output from the sub was nonexistent. After searching the internet for a fix, I found there were many others having the same problem on Toshiba ( and ASUS) laptops in Win 8.1. There is no problem with the hardware or drivers. The fix is in finding the well hidden sound adjustments. The defaults on the stock machine cut out all bass. Just do an internet search for the answer and you should be able to fix it easily. My external speakers now sound as they should.

The laptop comes with a lot of Toshiba apps that are more annoying than helpful. There are several shortcuts to games I will never play that I haven't figured out how to remove. Even with the games uninstalled the shortcuts remain. I like a very clean machine and never have liked the "helpful" programs and apps manufacturers preload on their products. I'm still finding my way around my first Win 8 PC so the cleanup and configuring is ongoing.

Overall, I am very pleased with this laptop for

4 out of 5 eggsGood Fit For Some

Pros: Perfect size screen for a touchscreen if you ask me. Computer boots fast and runs well with Windows 8. It is a refurb but if you would have told me it was new, I would have believed you. Not a scratch or scuff on it.

Cons: I wish the hinges at the bottom of the screen were more exposed, they are a bit sunk in so it is a bit more difficult to use the touchscreen at the bottom of the screen. The keyboard is NOT backlit - this was something I had not anticipated and it is a nuisance. The final issue is a combination of the first two, the non-backlit keyboard could be avoided by using the touchscreen on screen keyboard, but it is at the bottom of the screen which as I stated is a but tough to get to due to the way the screen sits. Will probably have to find an external lighting solution.

Other Thoughts: Even though my cons list was longer than the pros when written out, I do think this is a good laptop for the money and I like it a lot.

1 out of 5 eggsArrived Broken and Shipped in NOTHING!

Pros: Looks beautiful.

Cons: Arrived with NO manual.
Arrived with NO padding - in Toshiba box, inside another box SEVEN TIMES the size of the Toshiba box with a few airbags in it - NO PADDING. Outside box damaged. Inside box bent a little.

Machine would NOT TURN ON. :(

RUINED MY SON'S BIRTHDAY.

Other Thoughts: Would be willing to try again but pretty unhappy.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Starter Laptop for Win 8

Pros: I have not purchased this c55t-5222 from NewEgg and mine was new not refurb.
But this laptop Has a Touchscreen!
Runs all I need it to do.

Newegg should revise the specs.

Cons: Heavy but sturdy.

Other Thoughts: If you want to get a laptop not a tablet this one works just fine
with windows 8.
