5 out of 5 eggsToshiba Chromebook is a Winner

Pros: This is my first Chromebook and I find myself wondering why I own a tablet now. The battery life is superb, lasting a full day of use, the larger screen and exceptionally light weight make it easy to use anywhere. The performance is excellent and comparable to my i5 windows laptop. This is now my goto device for almost all of my computing. This is a low cost, totally useable device of excellent quality.

It is of course cloud centric which is very convenient. I also keep a lot of files and my music on an SD card in the device. This combination works really well.

If you are concerned about the need for WIFI to use the device, it does a lot of things off-line. That said, who does anything disconnected anymore? WIFI is everywhere.

My most used apps besides straight browser functionality are email, music player, google docs, evernote and kanbanflow.

Cons: My complaints are really more about Chrome O/S than this device. Coming from a standard Windows machine you will miss the delete key and right click functions which are accomplished with two-key combinations like alt-backspace for delete. There is plenty of online help and after a week or so, these have become habit and largely non-issues.

Other Thoughts: Give this a try, I looked at several other Chromebooks and this was by far the nicest. Great performance and build quality. Also most Chromebooks come with free google drive storage. Toshiba provides 100GB.

5 out of 5 eggsPractical Info from a Verified Owner

Pros: NOTE: All Chromebooks are inhererently the same. The more you pay, the better the hardware running the software will be, but there seems to be a diminishing return of performance as the price of the Chromebook goes up.

If you're looking to stream media, write, or perform other basic web functions (working in Wordpress included), a Chromebook is a solid option. It does come with basic image and video editing, but it's not a replacement for more professional software. If you consider yourself a writer, you'll be working in Google Docs, which isn't bad. Google Docs works offline by default, but you'll have to manually install the Gmail Offline app.

I manage my personal information with Evernote, and Chrome's browser extensions do work well. There is no way to localize Evernote's notebooks, but the web version works just as well as the desktop application.

The OS takes up less than 7GB of the SSD, and because you won't be working with PSD, AI, video files, or general storage, the remaining 9GB is more than enough. The Chromebook's folder system is simplistic and efficient with 2 folders: Google Drive and Downloads. You can nest folders in either the Drive folder or Downloads, but you won't be allowed to create folders higher than that.

The keyboard is low-profile and doesn't have a Caps Lock (spyglass) key, but if you play around in the settings, you'll see that all modifiers (Caps Lock/Spyglass, Shift, Ctrl, Alt) can be reassigned. By default, the Caps Lock/Spyglass key opens the menu options for quick access to apps.

Tip: Make it a point to learn the hotkeys. Because there isn't a Home, Delete, End, etc button, there are workaround hotkeys that are beginning to be my preference.

Other positives: fast boot, long battery life, surprisingly easy to connect to varying wi-fi hotspots.

Cons: If you buy this expecting it to perform as a mid to high level laptop or Macbook, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Then again, if you're the type to hate Anchorman because it wasn't The Notebook, you will hate having a Chromebook.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but know what you're buying...

Pros: Very fast boot up, around five seconds. Cheap. Ties in to google's ecosystem well. Plays 720p videos with no stutter. I was a bit surprised at the codec support in Chrome OS. Seems to be able to handle more tabs than the first gen Samsung Chromebook without lagging or freezing. I was able to get Crouton up and running fairly easy.

Cons: Screen and touchpad are just okay, though I understand they had to cut costs somewhere to get to this price point. The space key also doesn't always register if my thumb taps the left corner of it, I had to readjust my typing to hit closer to the center.

Other Thoughts: If you can live in a browser with Chrome apps and extensions, or don't mind loading Crouton on the device, it's a fairly good deal. You don't have to deal with viruses or patch tuesdays, however you do lose some flexibility and customization options that are standard in other OSes. Also, I'd be willing to pay a bit more for a higher quality and higher resolution display while keeping the same 14" size.

5 out of 5 eggssurprisingly fast

Pros: VERY fast powerup. Fast internet surfing. Faster than my dual quadcore workstation on a 5 mb connection as far as facebook is concerned. Perfect for my wife to check Facebook & email and light text editing

Cons: Its a pain to setup an internet printer.

Other Thoughts: I never expected this thing to be faster on facebook than a 8 core workstation. My wife loves it. 8 to 9 hours battery life is yet another big plus

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Chromebook From Toshiba!

Pros: This is a great replacement for an old iPad that we were using around the house. For the price of an new iPad I can buy 2 of the Toshiba Chromebooks! Toshiba products are always great, they are worth paying a couple dollars more for the Toshiba quality.

Cons: Not all Apps in Google Play for Android are available in the Google Chrome Web Store. 2nd: Not a Con for me but touch screen would be nice if priced right.

Other Thoughts: I will buy a 2nd one sometime... I may wait for Toshiba to come out with a touch screen.

5 out of 5 eggs13.3' SCREEN IS THE BOMB!

Pros: screen size, speakers, keyboard, touchpad, everything works properly, value for my $$, availabiltiy, Toshiba reputation for build quality and long life

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have an old Toshiba TV which is used every day. Bought it in 1995.
The 13.3" screen is much easier on my eyes and the machine is not that much heavier than the lightest 11.6" Chromebook. Thanks Toshiba, for bringing out the first 13.3" Chromebook.
