2 out of 5 eggsNothing terrible but many, many cons

Pros: The Core i7 chip with 12MB of memory is fantastic if you need the power (some of the memory is shared with video). For the size, this laptop is pretty powerful, probably more so than needed by the average user, but good if you do compute intensive work.

Cons: Battery life on this thing is the biggest drag on productivity. Since it was brand new I have never gotten more than 2.5 hours of battery life during regular moderate use. It's less than that after just 1 year, sometimes dying after 1.5 hours on a full charge. That's completely unacceptable for a laptop these days, also battery is not replaceable and slowly drains out even when the laptop is off (not an issue I've had with other laptops, but is documented on Toshiba's forums so must not be entirely uncommon for them.)

The screens on these Satellite's are pretty terrible. Low resolutions (after having lived with this a year I can't believe they are still making these sub-1080 screens on 15" laptops). Toshiba's is worse than many of these low-res touch screens with a screen that never gets very bright (hard to use in bright room or sun) and really poor off center viewing angles.

The touchpad is sub-par. I also regularly use HP and Asus laptops and the trackpads on those is way better than the Toshiba. Scrolling with the trackpad is terrible (lucky you can scroll using the touchscreen), and even the right/left click buttons on the pad are weak. After one year the right button doesn't work reliably.

Plenty of bloatware, now practically unremovable with Windows 8. The combination of Windows 8 and manufacturer bloatware in the form of Windows Store apps is particularly annoying if you're not going to be wiping and reinstalling from zero. It's cool that Microsoft's own store has started selling clean laptops, but kinda blows for everyone who tries to get a good deal only to get a machine subsidized by having a ton of unremovable junk on it.

Plastic-y construction. As compared with a bulky HP laptop that feels built like a Volvo, and an Asus Zenbook that feels precision machined like a Lambo, this Toshiba Satellite feels like a Geo Metro. It has held up ok over a year, but just doesn't have good feel to the fit and finish.

Other Thoughts: This initially seemed like not a bad value for a machine with pretty beefy specs that wasn't a 17 inch 15 pounder back before manufacturers were combining touchscreens and beefy specs (I had to have Windows 8 unfortunately, so wanted a touchscreen to make it passably usable). Now touchscreens are becoming more widely available on machines with decent processors and memory, and theoretically for those who are going to shell out for Windows 9 they might get a usable non-touchscreen desktop back.

All in all, for regular use where you might be unplugged for more than 2 hours at a time you should avoid the Satellite series like the plague. Nothing major has failed completely but beyond that faint praise there is nothing to recommend this laptop, and I certainly will know better than to buy one again.
