4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice CPU, lots of features, very nice screen, good warranty, separate graphics chipset. Runs Ubuntu 7.10 very nicely.

Cons: Would be nice to have higher resolution on the screen.

Other Thoughts: 1) Register with Asus to become a "VIP" member and have access to their support forums. There are posts in there on how to get more up-to-date video drivers.
2) Buy a 2GB DDR2-667 CL5 SODIMM and install to get a total of 3GB of RAM. This works great and will help with Vista. Don't bother installing 2x2GB SODIMMs, as the 32-bit Windows ~3GB usable memory limit will mean you won't be able to use that last 1GB anyway.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat buy but on-line server down alot

Pros: Works well so far, now that most of my programs are now Vista capable.

Cons: Online web server has issues. Does not come with XP Driver or drivers CD. you can only get them from online support. Also, you are limited to 160gig hard drive and 2 gig RAM.

Other Thoughts: I have my system dual booting Vista, XP Pro SP2, and Suse 10.3. I need a bigger Hard drive.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Relatively fast processor and a good graphics card for the price (card is better than Geforce 7600Go and Ati x1600 but worse than 7700Go and Ati's higher mobile cards). The 1gb of Ram is on 1 stick so it's easy to just by another stick for $40 or so and pop it in. Comes with a decent case and a relatively comfortable and very portable mouse. Good customer service.

Cons: Cheap plastic case that is prone to cracking under light pressure (as happened to me) and also cheap plastic buttons that don't align properly.
The quality of the display is only mediocre.
Often runs very hot.
Ati does not support the x1700 and the Asus driver is old.
Mediocre battery life (in my experience, 2-2.5 hours on max power saving mode with only basic tasks and the screen brightness at its minimum). Drops to 1-1.5hrs for games released 'til about 2006 and drops a bit more for newer games (unless you are willing to turn down the resolution and setting significantly).
Does not support any sort of surround sound and only has mic and regular outputs - no line in.
Price has not changed since I bought mine 5/19/07.
While the tech support is good, it's based out of Taiwan, and it's easy to tell both from the website and the tech support people that English is not their first language. This can make communicating a little difficult.

Other Thoughts: This is a machine that sacrifices a spiffy case as well as some screen quality and resolution (max of only 1280x800) for raw power. This is somewhat of a desktop replacement, but portable enough for mobile gaming, but I'd recommend plugging in to an outlet whenever possible. Works very well with the native lcd off and a monitor attached. Lack GPU support isn't huge with current games, but modded drivers can increase performance.
Once you are able to communicate fully with tech support, they are very quick to respond and competent, and when sending a laptop for return/replacement they pay for insurance and overnight transport both ways.
Loses stars due to cheap construction, display quality, and battery life.
Scores between a 4.3 and 4.5 on WEI.
Sidenote: As of November 8th 2007 it would be a good idea to look for a newer model, unless the price drops from ~$1230.

5 out of 5 eggsA good laptop

Pros: This laptop is perfect for my needs. Its integrated camera and microphone are pretty good quality. The bluetooth is pretty awesome and recognizes all my devices. I run stats programs on this, and the processor deals well with what I throw at it. I also do some gaming (Doom 3, Halo, and guild wars) and it performs fairly well. Power gamers would not like it, but it does the job. The screen is crystal clear, and I hate to be a dissenter, but I kind of like Vista. It works well with what I want it to do.

Cons: The keyboard is not quite up to par, but that is expected from a laptop. But it doesn't effect me much since I attached a bluetooth keyboard to it. The speakers are kind of tinny, but I use headphones and I get pretty good quality sound out of them.

One thing I must say: I took this on my flight to GA, and I took some movies to watch. On the plane, we needed subtitles to hear what was going on, and in the terminal, it was hard to see the screen with sunlight on it and still kind of hard to hear with head phones on. So if you are taking this flying, you may want to look into noise cancelling headphones.

Other Thoughts: I got this computer for my PhD program and I expect it to live through all 3-4 years. It has a 2 year warranty which I have not excercised yet. The heat on this is adequate, I bought a cooler for it, but I don't think it really needed it.

One last thing... I bought an extra gig of ram, and I think it really needs it for Vista. 1 gig anymore is just not enough. On my handy dandy cpu and ram meter, I am typically running at 800 M of ram usage at idle. Ram for this was cheap at under fifty bucks. So all in all, I am quite pleased with my purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsDream come True

Pros: Where to start...stunningly beautiful out of the box, sleek design, aesthetically pleasing. Was worried about VISTA, since i heard it was a memory hog and such. After the relatively quick install and boot, I went through and got rid of some programs (some ASUS utils and Nortons) and disabled a few services. Rebooted way faster, and with a ram upgrade its perfect. Vista is nice, just beware the compatibility issues because many programs have yet to support Vista (i got the dreaded blue screen after installing McAffee, so BE CAREFUL). Fast dual core, video card is great, plays HL2 and Oblivion on high settings. Obviously notebooks aren't designed for gaming but this one can handle most current titles. Keyboard is comfortable, screen is great, no dead pixels, webcam/mic a great addition. Plenty usb ports, bag and mouse is a nice addition. LOVE it!

Cons: The DVD burner only burns at 2x speed, which is way too slow (takes like 20-30 minutes to burn a dvd). Googling hasn't supplied me with a fix for this, since its supposed to go up to 8x. Will check into it again maybe. Compatibility issues with programs on VISTA, be careful what you try to install.

Other Thoughts: Upgrade to 2gb ram for better Vista performance. Consider getting a 2gb SD-card for ReadyBoost.

My first ever notebook (i built my own pc previously) and im extremely satisfied with ASUS...couldn't have gone a better route for the price!

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: The Price. you cant get anything with comparative hardware for anywhere close to this price. even with student discounts.
This laptop works great. i am able to play visully demanding games like Oblivion at max settings and eye candy and even some older games like total annihilation, starcraft, and TES Arena.
this was the first time i have used vista and so far i like it way better than xp.

Cons: there is a lot of bloatware but it is easily removed. the more bloatware it has the cheaper it is though. the carrying case provided is big enough to carry the computer, power supply and a few pens. and it does get very hot after some heavy gaming. but i will be getting a cooling station if i have enough money after i buy all my college textbooks.
there is no tv tuner

Other Thoughts: i will be ordering another gig of ram sometime this week along with a trackball mouse. i will defanently look at asus first next time i buy a computer.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus makes a Very Nice notebook

Pros: Awesome multi-use/gaming notebook. Asus makes quality components, have had many Asus MBs with no issues. Nice speed, nice ATI video, nice layout, nice screen, very close to workstation replacement speed after adding 1 GB RAM for 38 bucks (Corsair), plenty of ports, and a good size for the speed overall. Comes with a decent NB bag with padding, baby logitech mouse, and misc extras.

Cons: None, but GET RID of Norton IS, it sucks. Maybe should have 2GB RAM, but for 38 bucks I can put my own in.
Vista can be a bit annoying, you can turn off Super fetch service to speed boot time so the HD and isn't cached until the RAM is gone, turn off UAC, Vista's annoying security features as well, if your careful on the net. Doesn't have a GF 8800 GTX Go vid card, but didn't cost 2800 bucks either.

Other Thoughts: Spend about 38 bucks and upgrade to 2GB RAM. ( Corsair 1 GB 200 pin Item#:N82E16820145012 )
I bought a 2GB Corsair SD card(Item#:N82E16820233021) to use as Ready Boost in Vista which can cache and speed things in Vista to about a 10% increase.
I was very impressed in this notebook. I was debating building my own, but I couldn't pass this up for the speed and price compared to building my own. I play BF2 and CnC 3, CZero, many others (after cracking ATI desktop drivers to work for the X1700 vid card, was only an issue with CZero) everything else ran nice. Benchmarks pretty good for a mid range gaming laptop. I've been building PCs and in the business for many years, you shouldn't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect laptop!!!

Pros: I am a student entering college for Computer Science and this laptop is exactly what I wanted. I have not had any problems with Windows Vista yet. It was an advantage that it came with a mouse and a case, so I didn't have to buy them seperately. This is my first Core 2 Duo Processor, and it's amazing.

Cons: I HIGHLY recommend upgrading from 1GB of ram to 2GB. Just get another stick of 1GB PC2-5300 off of NewEgg while you order it. It's very easy to install. Just unscrew the bottom cover and pop it in. The 5400 RPM hard drive is kind of slow, but not slow enough for me to take the time and money to upgrade it to a 7200 RPM. The battery lasts 2-3 hours on the internet with battery saving mode. It lasts about 2 hours playing a movie. You can get the bigger 9-cell battery for $100 plus shipping. Comes with lots of bloatware, easily removed. There's a lot from Windows and ASUS.

Other Thoughts: I'm sharing my printer wirelessly from another computer on my network. It was VERY easy to set up. Vista automatically downloaded the drivers from my other computer. If I find myself using this laptop a lot at school, I will probably have to buy another battery if there's no plug. I also highly suggest buying a silicone keyboard cover. I got mine for $15 shipped and it works perfectly. It will protect the keyboard from dirt and grime, and especially if anything gets spilled in it. I considered buying the newer version of this, the F3SV, but this was cheaper so I just got this one.

5 out of 5 eggsLovin' my ASUS

Pros: Just great from top to bottom for me. Even the relatively low resolution is preferable to me since I don't want to try pushing too many pixels with the x1700 but want to keep things in native resolution.

Cons: The lack of updated video drivers. The drivers on the notebook were from December which, of course, is before Vista was even retail. Considering this PC was purchased in May, that's pretty awful. I'm extremely current now and everything's running fine.

Other Thoughts: This is my first notebook ever, and my first PC in years - heck, I've never owned a new PC before. Overall, it's the most pleasurable PC experience I've ever had and I wonder why I waited so long. This notebook does just about everything well and even games. For the price, it's ridiculously hard to beat.
