Acceptable service
- Pros: Great specs that met my build requirements, reasonable price. Average use is +6 hours a day w/88 processes running. Plays Sins of a Solar Empire very acceptably too!
- Cons: Limited battery life in high performance mode, but that wasn't a surprise. Absolutely, it needs a cooler (the Zalman is great!). Crapware, but that was expected.
- Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this through Newegg, but wanted to post my experience - and, as it crashed after three months of use, ASUS warranty service!
While working on a Word document, there was only a warning that the program had to shut down, which it promptly did, and restarted without a problem - for ten minutes before BSOD. Diagnostics wouldn't see the computer run in safe mode, though it would run a memory test. A trip to a local shop to recover files brought a determination that possibly the IDE controller fried. I emailed ASUS for RMA authorization (my first time ever trying that process with any mfgr). In four hours I received RMA shipping, and off it went - ground, not overnight air, as should've been per warranty. Turnaround time was one day. It's now running better than new with a new MB. Strangely ASUS responded to followup emails in Chinese! All in all, satisfactory; though I'll call ASUS in California if there's another problem. No doubt I made errors in the RMA process.
Asus RMA and Technical Support is horrible
- Pros: The specs are nice, the price seemed right.
- Cons: I received my notebook back in late December 07, it is now July 08 and I have just gotten the notebook back from its third RMA for the exact same issues of instability and intermittent blue screens. They tried to get me to pay a hundred dollars for supposed free shipping on the first RMA. They did not take my complaints seriously and did not put forth much effort to fix the problem with the first two RMAs, having the notebook at their facility for less than a day each time, definitely not enough time to reproduce the problem. They even failed to ship me a battery with the new replacement notebook I got back after they gave up on trying to fix it on the third RMA. Asus's tech support, repair, and customer service departments are one big joke, and I'm not laughing.
- Other Thoughts: I certainly won't be buying anything else from Asus ever again, and neither will any of my friends and acquaintances if I can help it. Newegg still gets 5 stars from me though, they've always been good to me over the years. I spoke with a Newegg customer service rep about this experience I've had with Asus just to let them know about these problems since I don't expect this review of an older product to get many views. She was very nice about it, explained that she'd be letting their technical department know of the problems I've had and assured me they take this sort of thing seriously. Newegg seemed very willing to help, and I kind of wish I would have gotten them involved sooner.
Very Nice Laptop!
- Pros: Very nice screen, fast, quiet, and it feels well-built. Includes a decent backpack and nice mouse. Included 1 year accidental damage warranty and 2 year limited warranty. That's more than most.
- Cons: Don't expect to get any rebate money back. Granted it has only been 4 months, but I haven't seen any rebate check yet. Also, it's bigger than it needs to be for a 15.4" laptop. It's much lighter than my last 17" notebook, but it doesn't have that much smaller of a footprint. Asus doesn't officially support WinXP, so it takes some extra effort to locate drivers to get XP on it if desired instead of Vista. The finish on the laptop get's smudges and fingerprints very easily. I'm not found of the quality and location of the speakers. They sound odd and are in the front corners pointing downward. Too much bloatware for my tastes.
- Other Thoughts: Overall, the G1S-B2 had the perfect combination of specs for me. I can't get myself to give 5 stars because of the list of minor annoyances along with the fact that my lack of a $150 rebate check isn't minor. Also, I suspect that my touchpad might have failed already but I recognize that it might be an XP driver issue (though it doesn't work when booting an Ubuntu CD either).
