Personal computing has never been so portable, or so affordable. The new EeePC, a joint venture between Intel and Asus, is designed to be your constant companion and your elegant yet affordable introduction to computing. Weighing in at only 2 pounds, with a compact and highly-readable seven-inch display, the EeePC is perfect little assistant. Running on a customized Linux operating system, it responds far more speedily than its Windows counterparts, but it’ll run Windows XP quite happily, if you like.
The EeePC offers two types of intuitive interface, to let you choose how you want to use it. Using either the “Easy” or full desktop mode, you can use the built-in WLAN connectivity to communicate on the run, share photos from your trip before you get home, or do almost anything else online. Flash storage keeps the weight low – without a hard drive, this micro-monster weighs in at 0.89 kilograms . . . that’s less than two pounds!
With the 40 included applications, high-speed internet capability, and exquisite sound, the EeePC could become your best friend – move over, Fido!

Nice little computer.
- Pros: Nice little laptop. The linux based operating system is easy to learn for first time linux users. Monitor is easy and pleasing to view even thought it is small. Wireless was easy to set up (WPA2 personal AES). If you have no need for the web-cam and can live with the slightly shorter battery life (2.8 hours), then get this 4G surf model.
Also very portable and lightweight. The hard drive capacity is small but this laptop was not meant for mass storage. An SSD card makes a nice addition for additional storage.
- Cons: The small keyboard takes some getting used to. I did have a few minor issues that were not covered in the help file but with some patience and research, they were resolved.
- Other Thoughts: Definately a keeper. Nice laptop for just simply surfing the web. Great price also.
Outstanding Value
- Pros: Amazing little laptop for the money. Celeron is speedy enough with the included OS or with eeeXubuntu on the solid state drive. The screen is easier to read than I expected. The tiny speakers are as good as they can be. Three USB ports! Overall a brilliant product, and amazing for the low cost.
- Cons: Battery life seems on the low side running eeeXubuntu, but that OS may not be optimized for battery life like the default OS is. Can run warm sometimes. Keyboard is as good as possible for the size but takes getting used to if you've got clumsy fingers like I do. Likewise, the trackpad doesn't give you a lot of room. I bought a small wireless mouse to carry with it, which has been invaluable.
- Other Thoughts: Make sure you appreciate the small size of this unit - I'd considered the purchase for a while and was still surprised. I'm thrilled with it, and the screen is better than I expected, but do be aware that it's quite small. The 4G surf doesn't come with a sleeve. I got a much nicer, inexpensive portable DVD case from a retail shop which is very much like a small laptop bag and fits a mouse, the AC adapter, and an ethernet patch.

"it just works
- Pros: Great price, solid build, great programs preloaded, untouchable operating system, small size (given), amazing speakers, one step factory restore!
- Cons: cramped keyboard (a given on machine this size).
- Other Thoughts: this is the best computer I have ever owned, I am a young man going into the computer technician field of work and this is the only machine I have ever seen that has never given me any trouble, simply take out of the box, turn on, and go, that's it, no stupid programs trying to sell you junk, just a good computer, I love it move every time I use it, sadly I love it more every time I use any other computer too, I have suggested this computer to everyone I know that is look for a new computer, it is just that good, thank you for reading.
- Pros: Great little machine. Replaced my aging Dell C600 with this. Combined with a 2 GB stick of memory, a 16 GB SDHC card, and WinXP it works great for on the go. I use Eeectl to control the fan/clock speeds and mine has no trouble playing Warcraft 3 when running at the full 900 MHz spec. Great for carrying to/from class since it's so small and light. Battery lasts 3+ hours when the CPU is throttled down.
- Cons: The keyboard is somewhat tiny and takes some getting used to. The display drivers from ASUS really do suck, do yourself a favor and get the drivers straight from Intel.
Excellent for school, very affordable
- Pros: Excellent to talk to class; lightweight, portable. I can fit it into my purse even. Affordable. Pre-installed Linux interface is easy to use even if your computer knowledge is limited. Perfect for web browsing and word processing. Best buy I've made all year.
- Cons: If you have large hands the keyboard is hard to type on and takes a bit of getting used to. Also, the eepc is finicky about connecting to closed wireless networks at times. Overall, however, an excellent machine.
- Other Thoughts: Excellent as a secondary computer. If you use the computer daily or plan on doing more than word processing and internet, this would be hard to use as your primary machine.
