Very Nice!
- Pros: Attractive, well built, powerful multimedia platform! Tons more bells & whistles than I expected for the price. Facial Recognition Log-On is a neat trick. The display is beautiful and the sound is awesome for a laptop; the thing has a subwoofer on the bottom! And an SPDIF output! Plays older games very, very well. Haven't expreimented with newer games yet. F.E.A.R. looked pretty nice at 1920X1200 with some of the settings bumped up a bit.
- Cons: Facial Recognition is a bit picky. You have to take MANY reference photos in various lighting conditions and set the tolerances to low. The software equalizer requires some tinkering to get the tone you want for games and movies. The recovery disc will not install on the other HDDs I got for it. I also bought a pair of 7200rpm drives to pop into it but the OS wouldn't install. Crysis won't run. "...cannot add to Windows Explorer..." or something popped up after installation completed. Running the game from the launcher has no effect. Hmmm...
- Other Thoughts: I really am pleased with the quality of this notebook. It does everything you could need it to do. Lots of memory and HDD space. Though it isn't marketed as a gamer, it seems to do really well. Don't expect to run FSX at 100fps, but WoW and BF2 look really good.
Quite pleased
- Pros: Screen real estate is spooky large @ 1920x1200; processor is fast, and supports 64-bit; dual HD bays; ASUS driver CD (see other thoughts); finger print login; 4GB RAM; comes with a Targus carrying case and USB mouse. Windows (64) Experience Index numbers (with 7200rpm drive): 5.4/5.0/4.7/4.9/5.4.
- Cons: Its 16"x11.5" footprint makes it a bit of a beast, won't fit in my backpack; Vista 32-bit; price dropped $50 the day after I bought it.
- Other Thoughts: I purchased this notebook after weeks of researching, and based upon 0wen's review. I'm a Sr. Software Engineer, so gaming was not my primary concern, rather screen real estate, processor speed, and hard drive space and speed were the things I was after. I purchased a pair of Seagate Momentus 7200rpm drives at the same time, and replaced the 5400rpm drives that came with it. I then installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and the ASUS driver CD made the install completely painless, giving me all the notebook functionality under Vista64. Honestly, I've never experienced such a smooth install of an operating system that didn't come with the machine, but then, I've historically been a Sony VAIO user. I tried a couple of games (UT3 and Team Fortress II), and they seemed to run well. Admittedly, the machine is pricey, but had the features I wanted.

Good Laptop
- Pros: Nice viewing screen...crisp and clear, full sized keyboard, no bloatware, nice shiny precious...
- Cons: The description reads "Whether you're watchng Blue-ray movies,..." STOP.....this does not have a Blue-ray DVD....so it's impossible to watch them...just play them...other laptops have blue-ray or HD for the same price or less...and it's heavy....am using it for Home multimedia 1st and travel 2nd. Audio is not jaw dropping...boom is not in the picture here...
- Other Thoughts: No Blue-ray drive that will fit at the moment. THIS IS NOT A BLUE-RAY LAPTOP...otherwise and good buy..
ASUS M70-SA not so hot
- Pros: Nice layout, good key feel. Good choice of options.
- Cons: Hard to figure out the Multi- interpretation on the DVD drive. Turns out it is a Plain Jane dummy DVD...can't handle HD or Blu-Ray whatsoever.
- Other Thoughts: The options on this one are all in nice fnacy techie jargon...I would not have bought this one (under the no-refund policy of course) understanding it would NOT have at least HD DVD capability. Call me stupid for buying in a hurry for a trip.
- Pros: On thing that you just don't get from the tech specs is how gorgeous this monitor is. I've never used one quite so pretty as this and with the 1920x1200 res it's so sharp and clear. Having usb ports on both sides is handy and the drives seem very fast. If I didn't know it I wouldn't guess that there are 2.5" drives in there instead of 3.5. It's just an around great machine
- Cons: The only reason I didn't rate this machine 5/5 is for lack of vista 64 support. Why would someone, let alone asus who should know better, sell an awesome machine like this and cripple it with vista 32? The first thing I did when I got it out of the box was wipe it out and install x64. Finding the right drivers took some time but everything apart from the custom buttons is working now. The mechanism for locking the lid in place does seem weak as well.
- Other Thoughts: I've been shopping for a desktop replacement for a while and looked at many options before going with this machine. It's a huge machine and won't often leave my desktop. I didn't get it to have a 'laptop' per say but to have a nice neat pretty desktop without cables everywhere. I'm very satisfied with the job it's on in replacing my tower pc.
