Wish I could've waited, BUT....
- Pros: the job sent me away for 3 wks & I needed a kit.
Otherwise the 8.9 inch 12G 900 with XP! I immediately swapped the 1GB stick with a crucial 2GB.
Although the 7 inch was a problem on a VERY FEW sites, I had no problem with my banking, c.c., utility bill, webmail, & airline sites. The linux is user friendly and the video player is a dream! I played & BURNED dvd's from a usb connected dvdrw, and XVIDs and avis from a jumpdrive, my Adata 16gb SD, a usb connected 80gb PATA drive, and the SS drive. No artifacts or interruptions.
The wireless and rj45 connections are dumb-simple and dependable. (although sharing from my home workgroup took some repetition and rebooting)
The camera is spot-on and the optical mouse was accurate and VERY comfortable for my small hand.
The smaller keyboard takes a bit of getting used to and I wouldn't do a dissertation on it, but it's rugged and has a positive and comfortable feedback.
Battery life is good for a full-length movie and a half
- Cons: Not really an EeePC con, but I couldn't find or figure out how to load proggys for video conversion (avi to mp4's for my Blackberry or avi to dvd) and the linux learning curve on the Xandros OS that is furnished is too time-consuming.
(I'll be loading XP on it.)
- Other Thoughts: It's small enough to clutch with no more attention than a paper-back book.
It's very rugged and durable looking. I got what I paid for.
Cheap and small
- Pros: Does the simple things well with FireFox and Open Office 2.0. This model allows changing the SSD and the memory, nothng soldered in place. About 5Gb free space as previously reported. Feels solid and well constructed. Weighs 2 Lbs, and is easy to carry around. Slip case and USB mouse included.
- Cons: Default, and proprietary Easy Mode near useless, it would be nice to remove some unneccesary stuff like AV, and the Web page links out of the box. This is Linux, so there are other distributions that fit here very well, notably Puppy, and the Eee variant, pupeee. Tiny footprint (200Mb vs. 2Gb+) with the same features and power. Most linux familiar users will toss the default OS for their favorite flavor.
- Other Thoughts: ASUS not too friendly with updates that actually work, and not much explanation for them. In short if you have no problems, DO NOT update, and read the forums before you do. Can't go wrong for $500, its a keeper.
Asus EEPC
- Pros: Ultra portible. Easy to use. Fast (considering) and cheap. Great system for little kids, students, women (fits in purse) or busy execs on the go. Handles XP very well and makes a great GPS w/ Delorne Street Atlas USA S/W & unit for the car or RV...even hiking when wanting a GPS. Good speakers and camera as well.
- Cons: Not the one PC to replace your others. It is a great supplimental ultra moble PC, not for CADD or big games. Especially if you have big hands, the KB could be larger (and screen) 9-10" would be better. But, then up goes cost, weight, size, etc. The 2Gb model is very limited. The 4GB mod is fine. Now, the 8Gb w/ 1 Gb RAM will be hot!
- Other Thoughts: I took my 4Gb model, installed XP and deleted unnecessary files & ended up with about 2Gb left for my GPS S/W. But then it was tight. Added a fast 8Gb SDHD so had a total of 12Gb and added a 2Gb RAM chip. NOW it is perfect for most uses. Starting with the 8Gb and then doing the same upgrades would be even better though 1Gb RAM is fine for XP. But the 2Gb chip wasn't much more than 1Gb. Versatile & fun! New colors (coming) are great! A cross between a notebook & a Palm but with full functionality.
