The F8Va from Asus revolutionizes the way you get your entertainment on the go, and it has features to improve your privacy and productivity. The 14" screen has Splendid video technology with 5 modes and 3 skin tone settings to optimize the image depending on what you are viewing.
The webcam also works with face recognition software so you can log on with just a look, or use the fingerprint reader by the touchpad for additional security. Additionally, Boot and HDD passwords ensure no one gets in where they shouldn't.
All of this functionality is great, but useless in isolation. That's why there is a plethora of wired and wireless connection options. Circling the shell are 5xUSB, 1xFireWire, 1xRJ-11, 1xGigabit Ethernet, 1xHDMI and more. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11a/g/n and Bluetooth V2.1.

Decent for the price
- Pros: 1 GB dedicated RAM, 4 GB RAM, Lots of extras that normally go for much more. Excellent performance. Wireless range is really good.
- Cons: Sometimes the keys don't register when I press them. It might just be me or it could be a fault. It's mostly a nuisance. Also the scroll area of the mouse pad is kinda hard to control. Would have like a mute button or volume buttons. It has a function key combination that works, but it's a pain to do one-handed.
- Other Thoughts: I am very impressed by the performance. COD4 runs fairly well. Most office programs load quickly and video encoding seems to go fairly quickly. Haven't had time to try anything else. Comes with drivers for Vista64 although it says it doesn't (and it comes with Vista32). Resolution is great (1440x900), although, as with all of the new shiny lcd's, off-axis viewing is a little restricted. I wouldn't trade it for any of my friends laptops.
Excellent Performance
- Pros: Its got the new centrino p8400 which seems to be a very strong performer. The graphics card has 1gb of ram and can run games at nearly the same speed as my desktop with an 8800. The 1440x900 with all the other features on this laptop make it easily one of the best portables out there.
- Cons: Though it is a 14" screen the laptop itself is only about half an inch smaller than my old 15" due to the large bezel that holds the webcam. As others have said the speakers are quite weak but i usually use headphone when im on it.
- Other Thoughts: Even though it was bigger than i thought it would be i am not at all disappointed.
If your looking for a laptop with a strong video card and want to avoid the recently discovered issues involving all of nividia's mobile lineup then this laptop is pretty much the best option out there without going desktop replacement.

Top of Lap
- Pros: Decent laptop for the money. Havent had any problems. Screen has a good view area. Wireless card is amazing. Pretty much anything wont disapoint.
- Cons: Software bogs the system down. System needs Windows Vista 64 bit. The 4 gigs that come with the system isnt utilized. Finger print scanner is worthless and the camera is junk.
- Other Thoughts: Hard drive has a decent amount of space for a laptop and the battery lasts surprisingly long. Has many different buttons made specifically for laptops which makes life that much easier
Effective and running triple boot vista, winxp, suse linux 11.1
- Pros: Happy with overall quality once repaired, very pleased to finally get a laptop to triple boot. fast and effective with decent graphics and 4gig ram. small enough to fit into my camera backpack, but powerful enough to do almost anything reasonable for the price.
- Cons: Initially came with badly working then dead web cam. Asus tech support was comatose, but customer service was very good and covered shipping both ways. Annoying but I wouldn't let that stop you from getting an ASUS. I bought the xp driver disk and most of it worked, but still had to do some digging to get the wifi and audio to work for xp.
- Other Thoughts: To get triple boot to work used "system commander" to add xp pro, then had to turn off system commander and let Suse Linux use its own setup and currently booting from GRUB. Note: had to turn on IDE compatibility mode in BIOS to the the multiboot to fly. Suse 11.1 did very well with drivers, in fact I used that and vista to figure out which xp drivers were mangled. Mostly using XP. Works for pcmcia cards (parallel n serial) with Express card to PCMCIA "Duel" [their spelling] adapter. Couldn't get old Liveview (PCMCIA) TV to work so far. Except when traveling use a wireless mouse and keyboard and a viewsonic 22 in display. Bobcad runs fast on XP, have done some data acquisition with windaq (usb) and Picoscope (serial), havn't been able to test Mach3 yet but did get the parallel PCMCIA adapter to push a printer and to toggle some of the mach3 I/0. Mach3 runs ok, but havn't tested on a real machine yet.
Great Notebook!
- Pros: It's a very quick notebook. Responds fast and overall I'm quite pleased with how vista runs on it. I'm still an XP fan, but vista does well on this. 4GB of ram is a serious upgrade as my last notebook had 1. Came with minimal bloatware from ASUS, as expected, and it was easily cleared with a pc decrapifier and norton removal tool. I got this system to be both a fast system to game on, but I also wanted it to have decent battery life - It gets about 2 hours with all the settings turned down, plenty for me and more than my last one. Decently large hard drive.
- Cons: It came with norton preinstalled. Came with Vista 32 bit, and I only realized this yesterday, and I am thinking of reinstalling with a 64 bit copy I have lying around. It comes with a 5400 rpm hard drive, which is typical of notebooks, so I will be replacing it with a 7200 rpm disk, simply because I tend to do hard drive intensive tasks, and that extra speed is always nice. It also came with two partitions, both 125GB in size. The second partition was named "Data", which I quickly removed and resized the first partition. No sense creating extra hassle by having two partitions.
- Other Thoughts: I would recommend this laptop over nearly any other out there. ASUS is a reputable brand, and I will stick with their name. I have always purchased motherboards from them, and I have been nothing but satisfied. The layout of the system is also really good, every component can be accessed via the bottom. It's size also makes it more portable while still having a very good screen resolution. It did weigh a little more than I expected, but it's not overly heavy like my last one.
Put this one on the top of your consideration list - you will not be disappointed!
