Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The Eee PC 900 is designed for people who need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Mobile CPU and 1GB of memory run this Linux system with power to spare.
The 8.9" screen has a 1024x600 resolution. The smaller screen lets you easily use it on a plane or train. A 16GB SSD Flash drive has plenty of room for you work and entertainment files and has no moving parts so it saves power.

- Pros: Lightweight. Ridiculously portable. Decently priced. You know the deal.
- Cons: The 16g version of the 900, compared to any of the other EeePC's, has a major flaw that not many people are aware of. Asus removed the quicker 4G hard drive to cut costs down. The problem that this creates is that the 16g's hard drive is SLOW. We're talking over a minute to boot to the OS, and even longer to shut down. Also, whenever the OS accesses the disk for more than a couple seconds, the entire OS will hang until it's done doing its thing. This happens quite often and is incredibly annoying to say the least. I haven't tried XP on it yet; maybe this will help, but I doubt it.
- Other Thoughts: The EeePC is in a realm of it's own when it comes to size and portability. However, the agonizingly slow hard drive ruins much of the value for what you get. Would I have bought this model of the Eee, knowing about the poor hard drive performance? Probably not. Hopefully Asus will release a BIOS update or a patch or something that will fix this problem.
Sound UMPC - as expected
- Pros: Small footprint
Solid-state disk
- Cons: Small (stiff) keyboard
Noticeable fan noise Klunky AC adapter
- Other Thoughts: Have owned an EEE 701 for several months, so will review the 900 relative to that. I bought Linux on both machines; have seen no OS differences between the two. Another unchanged point is the very small keyboard -- the central thing to make sure of before purchase is that the keyboard size is bearable for you.
Other points: This keyboard seems slightly stiffer than that on the 701. Unlike on the 701, here the fan is noticeable when it activates (not objectionable, but easily audible). Finally, the AC adapter here does not plug directly into the wall (as the adapter does for the 701), but connects via a bulky line cord. BTW, since there has been debate about this, the battery for this 900 has the same capacity as that for the 701 (5200 mAh).
I was familiar with the 701 before buying the 900, and (of course) was okay with the keyboard, since I really wanted the compact overall size. If that describes you, there's no reason not to get the 900. Same beast, bigger display

Cool little toy
- Pros: Lots to like on this thing: size, weight, nice screen, awesome keypad with cool features, plenty of USBs, really quite overall, SSD is a plus (but more to follow on it later). Comes with a nifty little case....the power supply is small also. Overall perfect for the road warrior who is tired of carrying around a full size laptop!
- Cons: Battery life just under 3 hours, keyboard is a bit tricky, speakers in the front, SSD (the speed it sometimes painfully slow causing web pages to hang up quite a bit). But that's about it.
- Other Thoughts: I travel quite a bit and got tired of carrying my full size around. When on the road, I usually only need it for the net anyway...so I decided to try this thing out. Besides some of the cons, I really like this thing. I didn't get it here but picked a black one up for $279. Overall very pleased and am having fun with it. Can't wait to see what the future holds in this market.
Cruddy performance, worse support
- Pros: Small, light-weight
- Cons: Extremely cheap hardware, erratic behavior
- Other Thoughts: I bought this for my wife last August to use as a secondary computer. Now, in March, the touchpad buttons have become erratic at best. Clicking only intermittently works. The device is under warranty, so I sent it to Asus for repair. They sent it back with the OS reinstalled, no repair done. The touchpad button still only clicks once in a while. Talked to Asus, and they want me to pay to ship the device back a second time. What a waste of money. DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK.
asus is flopping fast
- Pros: this is great if your kid is on your back about a laptop also want to clarify i own the 900a version which is merely equipped with a different size ssd of 4gb.
- Cons: original ssd ate it after only 6 months bios tells me no master drive found. booting from an external usb YEAH RIGHT i now have 2 lap drives USELESS. another reviewer wrote forget XP heed his warning. included OS is loaded with bugs btw its xandros. the option to boot from an sd card is there but whats the point thats even slower..to replace the ssd with a decent speed is gonna run about $160 with a 32 gb run core model
- Other Thoughts: its not the fault of intels atom the ssd drive is still in development sure it sounds fast. i mean no moving parts more battery power. but a life of 2 years 10k on off cycles and the more speed the shorter the life.. currently i can not sell one of these to a pawn shop. final thought..
if your gonna spend $300-$700 for a laptop buy a full sized full speed mobile processor machine. you may as well. your better off in the long run..
