Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The Eee PC 1000 is designed for people who need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Atom N270 CPU and 1GB of memory run this Linux system with power to spare. The 40GB SSD drive conserves battery life and has exceptional shock resistance.

The 10" screen has a 1024x600 resolution. The smaller screen lets you easily use it on a plane or train. The keyboard goes all the way out to the edge of the case and is 95% the size of a standard keyboard so using it will feel normal.

Designed to be used anywhere there is a built in WiFi controller that supports 802.11b/g/n protocols. If there is no wireless signal around then you can plug into a standard Fast Ethernet connection. A webcam lets you have video chats. You can use a Bluetooth headset or plug into the audio jacks.

  • newegg Ultra Portable Netbook Powered by Intel Atom Processor Equipped with an Intel Atom processor, Intel's smallest and lowest power processor, the Asus Eee PC 1000 is extremely compact and lightweight while delivering the power and performance you need for full online freedom.

5 out of 5 eggsEven better than expected

Pros: This thing is amazing! its super light, the battery lasts about 5 hours, it is much faster than i expected. I love having a computer to carry around with me and not have to worry about finding an outlet, or lugging around a huge heavy laptop.

Cons: The keyboard takes a little getting used to but it is much easier than some claim.

Other Thoughts: I immediately installed eeeubuntu based on many reviews and love it. I also upgraded the ram to 2gb. The upgrade made a noticeable difference especially when trying to watch streaming video on hulu. Without it, hulu was pretty much impossible to watch.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Netbook, but becoming dated

Pros: - Small size
- Comfortable screen
- Easy memory upgrades
- SSD
- Lightweight
- Fast enough

Cons: - SSD's are only as fast as a 5400rpm drive and are in mini-pcie format, making them 'weird' and leaving you only Runcore SSD's to purchase, which are expensive and not as fast as the latest SATA SSD's. I liked this guy, but I liked it so much that I wanted more and went for a 1000HE with the potential to upgrade to a SATA SSD. The computer took longer to boot up and do things than I felt comfortable with, knowing some SSDs such as the Vertex series are going to get the job done better.
- This model is now 'antiquated' with the 1000HE's existence with a faster CPU.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't get one now. It was good in the past, but for $400 it's not worth it considering the 1000HE is cheaper. I got this VERY cheap as open box and if you do I would suggest that, but otherwise you're paying too much for a year old computer in comparison to faster, newer variants.

5 out of 5 eggseee pc 1000 + ubuntu

Pros: long battery life, 5- 6hrs at lowest performance setting w/ display dimmed.
glossy finish is very scratch resistant
inexpensive
works well for everything but very processor intensive applications
almost full size keyboard

Cons: glossy finish shows smudges easy
right shift key in awkward location
power connector comes out too easy

Other Thoughts: EEE PC + Ubuntu 8.10:
I installed ubuntu, first thing when i got it as it has been my prefered desktop the last few years. netbootin and an usb drive makes installation a snap however an usb connected optical drive works well too. I also upgraded it to 2gb ram mainly to make up for the loss of a swap partition. I reinstalled Ubuntu once to get rid of the encrypted root drive cause having to enter a long passphrase every time i booted was getting to be really annoying. I use the most recent kernel from array.org along w/ the dkms wifi drivers which will also work w/ the stock kernel. The array.org kernel seems to me to lag less. Everything works, wifi/bluetooth/card reader/camera/3d acceleration(slow as sin but thats normal for this hardware). I did some optimizations for ssd as outlined in the ubuntu eee pc wiki.

anyway thats it works great for me and im quite happpy w/ it

5 out of 5 eggsMake IT Work

Pros: It's great for what it's made for! Light and durable for travel and since this one has SSD it has awesome battery life! I tried everything with it: linux (including Ubuntu) and I settled with XP Pro.

Cons: Mouse buttons are a bit hard to click but I got used to it. The SSD is also not one hard drive: it has an 8GB primary and a 30GB secondary. I'm working my way around it tweaking the registry so it's fine.
I also put in a 2GB stick of RAM (it only has 1 slot for RAM by the way) and setup ramdrive to help the multi-task but don't count on it being as smooth as a Core2Duo. It's expected that it isn't made to mutli-task very well.

Other Thoughts: Getting the right settings will be the difference between using this netbook with comfort or frustration. I changed the XP settings so that the program files are located in the 30GB secondary SSD and added an 16GB SD card for "My Documents" so this makes up for the space.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product...bad OS

Pros: I love the portability of this laptop! The battery lasts at least twice as long (more likely longer than than that) as any other laptop that I have owned!

Cons: The built in operating system is a joke, so I installed Ubuntu 8.10 via a stick. I am having problems getting the wireless to work with my University. This comes from my lack of experience w/ linux, as well as confusing support via forums. I never posted questions to forums, I just read though them.

Other Thoughts: As long as you get the preloaded OS off of this beautiful machine, it is a great netbook/laptop! (I have an actual OS on mine, so I consider it a laptop)

1 out of 5 eggsBlank and Frozen Screen

Pros: It's small, lightweight, moderately powerful, has a long battery life, and had a great price. I found that the keyboard was very comfortable on the 10" and I like the a/g/n, bluetooth, and webcam.

Cons: The first day I started using it I experienced the "blank screen" problem that I have now read about so much on internet forums discussing this model (primarily) and a few others. I upgraded the RAM, but noticed an extensive slowdown in performance some of the time. I installed Windows XP per the manual's instruction and using the drivers--it worked alright except for the same blank screen problems. Then, it began freezing. The screen would simply freeze whatever it was displaying. Each time the blank or frozen screen problem occurred, the computer would have to be force restarted. These problems happened both on AC and battery. This is not a software issue, as I tried several configurations and information from internet forums indicates that people running both Linux and Windows XP are having the same problems. When I called ASUS tech support, the first guy tried to help but didn't know much of anything and his manager just told me they don't do tech support if XP was installed. Great

Other Thoughts: If this blank and freezing screen issue, and the occasional sluggishness never happened, this would be a great computer. I just asked for a return from newegg, so I'm waiting to see what they will do for me.

5 out of 5 eggsRemarkably Useable

Pros: It's small, it's pretty lightweight, it's cheap, it's pretty rugged, and it's got a very battery life.
Despite its small size, the screen is attractive and sharp.
ASUS' SuperHybridEngine lets you underclock or overclock the processor a little bit to increase the battery life or performance as needed.
The touchpad's new drivers let you do neat things like zoom in, drag windows, go forward and back, middle- or right-click all without touching the somewhat noisy touchpad buttons.
You can toggle the wireless and bluetooth, change the resolution, change the SuperHybridEngine settings and set the computer to standby with the keyboard.
Youtube, Hulu, and Netflix videos works pretty well, even on fullscreen, and it plays back other videos almost flawlessly.
The screen's hinges seem pretty heavy-duty, and have shiny caps on the ends.
It comes with a sleeve and cloth wipe for when it gets smudges on it.
It comes with Windows XP drivers, even though it has only Linux preinstalled.

Cons: It comes with 1GB memory, but it's easy enough to upgrade the memory.
The Xandros variant it comes with is kind of restrictive, but easy to use if all you want to do is surf the web and check your mail. It's easy to replace, despite the lack of an internal optical drive.
It comes with two solid-state drives (instead of the single drive I kind of expected), and removes a SATA interface in favor of the mini-PCIE connector for the larger SSD.
Its battery sticks out a bit on the bottom, but it's not that bad.
The right shift key is placed in an odd spot.
The numlock key is on by default at the Windows XP login screen (making any password with a u,i,o,p,j,k,l, or m in it incorrect), and I can't figure out how to turn it off. The BIOS doesn't have anything that I can see, and all I can find on Google is about turning off numlock by using a registry hack - and changing the requisite registry key doesn't seem to change anything.
It's got a kind of slow processor, but it's not very thirst

Other Thoughts: Even though the keyboard is undersized (~90% of full), it doesn't take very long to get used to.
It weighs a little more than some other netbooks because it has a pretty large battery in it. The easy removal of the back panel makes upgrading the ram easy.
The 1.3 megapixel webcam seems ok, if a little sluggish.
The pair of microphones seem to pick up your voice pretty well, but the speakers are nothing special. In addition to being kind of tinny and undersized, they are located (as far as I can tell) on the underside of the computer, so if you use it on your lap or something that's not real flat you kind of muffle the sound. The volume does seem to be adequate for playing back sound in relatively quiet environments.
The fan is pretty quiet most of the time, and the unit runs pretty cool compared to other laptops I've used - even while charging.
It will run a pretty high resolution display ok, too - it seems to work fine on my 1680*1050 monitor. Haven't tried video playback on that

3 out of 5 eggsFrustrating, overpriced, slow SSD

Pros: Light weight, good battery life, shock resistance due to SSD, which was important as I bought it for my father in law the long distance trucker.

Cons: *SSD is actually "two" SSDs - the 7gig primary and the rest is on a secondary drive. The primary is ok performing - 12meg/sec write from what I've read- the second one is hideously slow at 4 meg/sec. Got this for my father in law, installed WinXP on it, then he promptly got a trojan on it. My brother in law reinstalled WinXP on the second drive. Needless to say it ran like Win95 on 4 meg of RAM until I wiped and reinstalled.
*SSD is too slow to handle decent write speeds to an external DVDRW drive.
*Left shift key is poorly positioned and tiny. I know a writer who sent this model back due to this.
*Cooling fan varies it's speed up and down constantly, annoyingly,
*Only likes it's own power adapter- I plugged in a Targus universal unit and it said it was on AC power- then the battery died and the laptop shut off with no warning.
*Overpriced IMO, you can pick up $350 laptop from that'll blow this out of the water performance in every performance category except battery

Other Thoughts: I ran out of space in the cons. Oops.

Final conclusion: Unless you need the extra battery life and shock resistance, buy a real laptop, or at the very least,

Side note, how does ANYONE use a netbook with less than a 10" screen other than as some kind of teenage girl fashion accessory?

3 out of 5 eggsAC/DC power supply dead after 24 hours

Pros: small, light, low price

Cons: quality control -- the power supply died after just one day

Other Thoughts: As stated, the AC/DC power supply died after just one day. Asus will send a new one but it will take 5-7 days to get to my NJ location from their stockroom in CA. If I wanted to expedite shipment, the Asus wanted $25.00 for S/H. They are out of their mind! Besides, it looks like they are having some problems with that power supply -- their tech support said so.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent remote tool!

Pros: - Small, easy to carry around meetings and traveling
- Boots fast, wakes from suspend even faster
- Runs Linux easily, with all the neat free tools
- Relatively cheap
- Big SSD capacity

Cons: - Factory Xandros variant is terrible, could not figure out how to configure it as I wanted. It lasted about a day in that state.

Other Thoughts: Great hardware, questionable OS platform. Do yourself a favor and load Eeebuntu 2.0 (I used Base) via bootable USB thumb drive. All the function keys and other hardware works great, including suspend mode. The wireless driver works better now than from the factory. I couldn't be happier with my Eee PC now.
