Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The Eee PC 1000 is designed for people who need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Atom N270 CPU and 1GB of memory run this Linux system with power to spare. The 40GB SSD drive conserves battery life and has exceptional shock resistance.
The 10" screen has a 1024x600 resolution. The smaller screen lets you easily use it on a plane or train. The keyboard goes all the way out to the edge of the case and is 95% the size of a standard keyboard so using it will feel normal.
Designed to be used anywhere there is a built in WiFi controller that supports 802.11b/g/n protocols. If there is no wireless signal around then you can plug into a standard Fast Ethernet connection. A webcam lets you have video chats. You can use a Bluetooth headset or plug into the audio jacks.

Asus Eee 1000 -- I'm in love....
- Pros: This little computer is lightweight, with adequate storage capacity at almost 40G available SSD storage (split between a primary 8G and a secondary 32G SSD). Processing speed is adequate to get most tasks done effectively. Wifi detection is excellent -- I travel quite a bit and hooking to new WiFi networks is almost effortless, way better than a Windows XP computer. Battery life is phenomenal...I'm averaging 6 to 6.5 hours with disk-intensive processes, 7+ hours with less disk intensive processing. Glad I waited on the 10" version for the extra keyboard size. Boots and shuts down quickly.
- Cons: The location of the right shift key is a little annoying...it's just a tad too far to the right. I keep hitting the PageUp key when I'm touchtyping instead.
- Other Thoughts: Upgraded to 2G RAM, replaced the Xandros OS with Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 RC2...drastically increased the user experience for me.
just what i needed
- Pros: Size, the solid state drives means no moving parts & higher battery life, stylish, integrated all hardware that i need.
- Cons: no firewire port & the default Xandros install does not support 802.1x, an enterprise-level wireless protocol that is used at many universities... including mine. There's a hack to get it running on Xandros, but I found it easier to replace the Xandros install with Ubuntu.
Also note that the motherboard only supports 2 GB ram, maximum.
- Other Thoughts: I love this thing. You can tell they've had a year to refine the Eee, and it shows. The hardware is solid, robust, and well-integrated.
As for the software: The Xandros Linux default install may very well be the thing for those unfamiliar w/ Linux. I personally found the hand-holding layout cumbersome, and replaced it with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.
Mind you, Tthere are a few quirks w/ Ubuntu Hardy on an Eee. Some of the hardware isn't supported by the default kernel, most critically wifi. It requires some minor tweaking, but if you have no alternate web access you might be in a pickle, so I strongly recommend you read through the process before you try it.
There are already a few versions customized for the Eee, such as Ubuntu-eee and Eeebuntu. I tried Ubuntu-eee, and IT supports wifi from the get-go. Rumor is that the next revision of Ubuntu, version 8.10 due in October, will support all Eee hardware by default. I hope that's true....

Even better than expected
- Pros: This thing is amazing! its super light, the battery lasts about 5 hours, it is much faster than i expected. I love having a computer to carry around with me and not have to worry about finding an outlet, or lugging around a huge heavy laptop.
- Cons: The keyboard takes a little getting used to but it is much easier than some claim.
- Other Thoughts: I immediately installed eeeubuntu based on many reviews and love it. I also upgraded the ram to 2gb. The upgrade made a noticeable difference especially when trying to watch streaming video on hulu. Without it, hulu was pretty much impossible to watch.
Great Netbook, but becoming dated
- Pros: - Small size
- Comfortable screen - Easy memory upgrades - SSD - Lightweight - Fast enough
- Cons: - SSD's are only as fast as a 5400rpm drive and are in mini-pcie format, making them 'weird' and leaving you only Runcore SSD's to purchase, which are expensive and not as fast as the latest SATA SSD's. I liked this guy, but I liked it so much that I wanted more and went for a 1000HE with the potential to upgrade to a SATA SSD. The computer took longer to boot up and do things than I felt comfortable with, knowing some SSDs such as the Vertex series are going to get the job done better.
- This model is now 'antiquated' with the 1000HE's existence with a faster CPU.
- Other Thoughts: I wouldn't get one now. It was good in the past, but for $400 it's not worth it considering the 1000HE is cheaper. I got this VERY cheap as open box and if you do I would suggest that, but otherwise you're paying too much for a year old computer in comparison to faster, newer variants.
eee pc 1000 + ubuntu
- Pros: long battery life, 5- 6hrs at lowest performance setting w/ display dimmed.
glossy finish is very scratch resistant inexpensive works well for everything but very processor intensive applications almost full size keyboard
- Cons: glossy finish shows smudges easy
right shift key in awkward location power connector comes out too easy
- Other Thoughts: EEE PC + Ubuntu 8.10:
I installed ubuntu, first thing when i got it as it has been my prefered desktop the last few years. netbootin and an usb drive makes installation a snap however an usb connected optical drive works well too. I also upgraded it to 2gb ram mainly to make up for the loss of a swap partition. I reinstalled Ubuntu once to get rid of the encrypted root drive cause having to enter a long passphrase every time i booted was getting to be really annoying. I use the most recent kernel from array.org along w/ the dkms wifi drivers which will also work w/ the stock kernel. The array.org kernel seems to me to lag less. Everything works, wifi/bluetooth/card reader/camera/3d acceleration(slow as sin but thats normal for this hardware). I did some optimizations for ssd as outlined in the ubuntu eee pc wiki.
anyway thats it works great for me and im quite happpy w/ it
