4 out of 5 eggsSimple, Powerful, Stable

Pros: Very simple Linux interface (non-Linux familiars should find it even easier than typical Windows setup/usage). Decent camera, sound and microphone features (music plays in the speakers without sounding tinny or distorted). Dual function keys make hardware features quick to control (as in most laptops). Voice commands more useful than novelty.

Cons: Some software interfaces can suffer from the low horizontal resolution of the monitor unless you install the VGA Utility which allows panning of the screen. Some voice commands could use less user interface ('Computer Music' could load AND start playing available track. 'Computer Shutdown' could start a configurable countdown timer instead of requiring two more user 'clicks' to complete for instance).

Other Thoughts: Very satisfied with the unit out of the box. The addition of an inexpensive 8GB SD card in the SD port gives me all the storage I need to travel without any external drives or USB dongles 'hanging out'.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, Cheap Netbook

Pros: Lightweight, small form factor, quick boot speed

Cons: Screen is small but is easy to get used to, cramped keyboard, minuscule trackpad

Other Thoughts: Great little netbook. Picked it up for $199, and it was well worth the money. Linux is a nice touch, and a welcome vacation from Windows. That being said, it comes with the basic desktop installed. I went through, enabled the full desktop and I now have a fully functioning Linux machine. The keyboard is cramped but is not too hard to get used to. I would have like a larger trackpad, but at the price, beggars can't be choosers.

I've started using this machine much more than my desktop, and I think that says volumes about just how great this thing is. Asus really outdid themselves!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value, Asus quality

Pros: Solid, secure everything is included, got everything to work and updated from Asus website. This unit is very light weight and easy to carry around. The Linux OS so far is easy to use with the Asus Desk Top. The Linux restore was easy run on my Laptop with the restore DVD function, all well documented. Creating a bootable DOS USB was easy with HP USB Disk Storage Format utility (renamed SP27608) remember to have a bootable floppy in A: drive to transfer boot files.

Cons: The battery could be better.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this system to upgrade to WinXP, you can if you want to directions and drivers available at Asus website. As a scond thought I realized this system could be used for a retraining tool on Linux, for $249 what a deal.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Travel Laptop!

Pros: Small. Lightweight. SDD card slot built-in, this is great for uploading photos while traveling. Usable on 120v & 240v power. Great way to stay connected while traveling without lugging a ton of bricks around.
Fits perfectly in the Patagonia Atom backpack. Seems to be fairly rugged. Wifi reception is very good, better than my desktop PC. Comes pre-loaded with Skype. Has two built-in speakers on either side of the screen.

Cons: I did have an issue on occassion with certain wifi sites. Ones that require an ID & PW to logon. I think software-wise there is something missing to support this older scheme. Maybe there is an update to add this type? All the more modern wifi sites worked without a hitch. 80% of the places I used it, had no issues.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop for travel. I just came back from 2 weeks in south america and it worked great. Its just enough to stay connected for basic things, email & internet. Very happy with the purchase. Its cheap enough that if you break it or someone steals it, no big deal.
The screen size is small and so is the keyboard, but thats a reasonable trade for less weight and size.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little PC

Pros: 4 Cell Battery, however the celeron kills it in 3hrs. VERY LIGHT. Solid State Drive has 1.3gb free. Skype is OK and usable. Easily hacked with pimpmyeee.sh file available on the web. Stutters on Hulu and Joost, plays AVI's off the SD card So/So. Speakers are loud however after an update the volume was lost - press "CTRL"+"ALT"+"T" to bring up the terminal and type "sudo alsaconfig" and then keep pressing enter. You can also "sudo alsomixer" and use the arrow keys to UP the volume.

Cons: 603mhz Celeron consumes power, it's actually a 900mhz model with reduced voltage. DO NOT UP IT TO 900mhz, there's NO performance gain. Xandros kernel only supports 1gb Ram, but you can download and compile an updated one for 2gb. When in sleep the battery will die out in 5hrs, it only takes 5 seconds to shutdown, 18 seconds to boot up and connect to wifi-SO SHUT IT DOWN.

Other Thoughts: 4gb SSD is limited but the SD card reader will take up to 8gb (tested-maybe more) SDHC cards.

Don't run the wireless security update, wouldn't connect to WPA afterwards had to reinstall (thus LOOSE everything - Use the SD card for storage, lesson learned).

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great little machine perfect size...Boots up very fast and weighs almost nothing making it easy to carry around....Battery life O.K.
Super fast free shipping from Newegg good company to deal with as usual.

Cons: Display could be a little brighter

Other Thoughts: First time using Linux and find it confusing but I'll learn.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate and memory notes

Pros: Just a note on memory. My 4G had a PC2-3200 512MB SODIMM installed. Although Crucial indicated a 2GB PC2-5300 SODIMM would work here, following install the machine only seems to see 1GB usable. The hardware tool finds 2GB, but system info and /proc/meminfo both indicate 1GB. No big deal for me, just thought I'd post. Still love this little machine! The display is really terrific for it's size.

Cons: I did run into an issue configuring Thunderbird for email since I can't scroll down enough to click on a couple options for my POP account!

5 out of 5 eggsDurable machine

Pros: I've had mine since March 08 and still going strong. Fairly durable netbooks. Battery life still about the same as when purchased. One of or maybe is the smallest netbook available. 512MB ram works fine for most tasks, just upgraded to 2GB to run virtual machines. Tried Linux versions but put on XP home to get best compatibility with work programs and networking into work.

Cons: Small screen but that is how you get the smallest size (and speakers on the side of screen rather than bottom of unit), so not really a con. Same with keyboard, so I guess it depends on how you look at those things. These are known items so they shouldn't be a surprise.

Other Thoughts: I think the screen brightness is fine, but the overclock utility can make it even brighter. Check out eeeuser.com for the best tips.

I started with 8GB SD (Transcend) then went to 16GB, made it the D: drive and install most programs to that.
