4 out of 5 eggsVery good

Pros: Fast processor.
Nice bright display, I like the glossy screen - seems to add contrast.
Good keyboard.
Seems sturdily built, but not too large or heavy.
Fingerprint reader works well for me.
Built in ATI 4570 graphics, very adequate for light gaming, videos.

Cons: Built in sound is very weak and tinny sounding. Not enough volme even if turned up all the way. My wife's Asus 1000HE eee PC sounds better!
No Bluetooth.
No Firewire.
32-bit Vista, so only 3GB of memory out of the 4GB is recognized.
ATI 4570 graphics not the greatest or fastest if you are a heavy gamer.

Other Thoughts: Mine contains DDR2 667 memory, pehaps not the most optimal for this CPU/chipset? I bought this for use as mostly as a part time work PC. You might find faster machines here at Newegg for around the same price, but I was attracted to the size/weight/speed/price combination this laptop offered (especially at $100 off). The widescreen 1366x768 screen might not be ideal for business, but it works for me. The weak built in sound bothers me the most. C'mon ASUS! my old 1999 IBM Thinkpad i sounds better. Also, while there are sound outputs for headphone, SPDIF, and HDMI - there is no stereo line-in input. The modem jack does not work and has a rubber plug over it -- these days not really an issue at all.

Something curious... In the box an S-Video to composite cable was provided? What for? Also, a warning sticker affixed on the back states "THE LAMP IN THIS DISPLAY CONTAINS MERCURY...". I thought this had an LED illuminated display? I've never heard of LED's to contain mercury..

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price

Pros: * Great - bright, vibrant - screen, albeit not the best resolution, but works for me

* Fast CPU & GPU, great for pretty much anything

* Very quiet and runs quite cool compared to the laptops I had in the past

* Exhaust in the back (not bottom or side that gets obstructed often)

Cons: * Pretty quiet speakers (but I almost always use headphones anyway)

* Volume controls through Function key (no single knob or on/off button)

* 32bit Vista (I use XP anyway so this wasn't really a problem. More of an inconvenience easily deal with)

Other Thoughts: * Nice warranty by ASUS

* All drivers for pretty much any OS available on their site

5 out of 5 eggsFirst Laptop - Not Disappointed

Pros: Awesome specs for the money
LED screen is very nice and bright - had to crank it down
HDMI out
Good looks
Nice keyboard feel
Warranty

Cons: None for me

Other Thoughts: This is my first laptop. I needed one for some upcoming travel. I wanted a laptop that had power, features, and low weight all without breaking the bank. This laptop gives it all to me. It's light enough for travelling yet powerful enough for accomplishing my tasks.

Agree on the reviewer who commented on the headphone output. But I messed with the SRS settings and it helped.

This has nothing to do with the laptop but IMO Vista isn't so bad. Just wish I could have held out longer for Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Laptop at this price

Pros: ~Awesome hardware specs for the price... fast processor, dedicated graphics, plenty of RAM and hard disk space.
~Nice solid full size keyboard (much better feel and size than my previous 13.3" Toshiba ultraportable)
~Great looking laptop! The graphite carbon finish is a nice touch.
~Free 1 year accidental damage coverage, with 2 year standard warranty
~LED backlit LCD screen is crisp and bright.
~Light & Portable

Cons: ~Headphone jack output is a little weak, even at 100% volume.
~Battery life- less than 2 hours
~No Bluetooth

Other Thoughts: At $799, this laptop is by far the BEST VALUE. With similiar specs, other laptops cost about $300-400 more.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome computer!!

Pros: I just got my F81 and im already loving it..

its fast, quite and doesnt get hot that much...(it gets little warm on left palm area but thats not something to worry about)

and of course, it has an awesome spec for the price and screen is faboulous.

Awesome keyboard and surprisingly light weighted!

Cons: battery life, although i expected, is kinda low but the specs make it up.

speakers arent that great, its not loud enough to hear stuff- needs headphone for entertainment

and the touchpad gets little hot (not much tho) as well, which annoys me greatly...this is only major concern i have for this laptop.

Other Thoughts: design is pretty good and great specs and lightweight
everthing is awesome except the touchpad

and thx Newegg for their extremely fast shipping service! (ordered it yesterday and was shipped this after noon!)

4 out of 5 eggsGet a bang for your buck

Pros: * awesome hardware for the buck (this baby is fast, dedicated graphics card surely makes a difference)
* Nice Led screen, so bright I have to dim it
* considerably LIGHT notebook for the size, I had a 12" before of the same weight
* spill-proof keyboard (haven't had a chance to test yet tho)
* sturdy, well-built laptop
* fine finishes, big-keys and good layout keyboard, nice to touch
*okay battery life
* 2yr mechanical+1yr accidental warranty, sweet-sweet deal

Cons: * 32-bit Vista. Vista period, but the choice of 32-bit really puzzles me. It doesn't even recognize 4 gig of RAM. I dont get why put 4Gram and 64-bit proc together and then limit it by 32-bit OS, simply dont get it.

* no quick-access multimedia keys, as mentioned earlier, no biggie tho.

* my main con is the TOUCH PAD. Jumpy, sometimes continues to scroll after I already took my fingers off, so Im kinda forced to carry a mouse. Im on the go a lot and therefore not a big fan of carrying extra-items

Other Thoughts: I will live with existing touch pad, in overall happy with the purchase, big bang for the buck. Dont miss the mail-in-rebate.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome laptop, powerful, JUST SWEET

Pros: Oh boy where to begin on this one...the F80 series is a really nice lineup in ASUS' already impressive collection and this F81 is really up there. The keyboard has a nice, sturdy, well-built feel to it. Actually the whole thing has a nice build to it (nothing flimsy or out of place).

The LED screen is actually really nice. Bright really is bright on this thing, although some videos turned out a bit grainier than I would have thought. Very minor though.

OF COURSE, the hardware that you're getting for this price is AWESOME. The processor really takes care of bidness and the graphics are sweet too. Everything runs smoothly once you get past the initial booting and first-time loading.

Cons: The biggest point would have to be that the OS is Vista 32 bit but the comp is loaded with 4GB RAM. Don't understand why but Vista seems to be doing this quite often.

Other than that very minor nitpicky stuff:
-there are no dedicated quick-access multimedia keys (play/pause/volume control, etc.)
-drivers for the fingerprint reader need to be sought out on the ASUS website

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a really great notebook for a wide range of uses. Whether the use is for a student, business, or just for fun - it can handle it all. The build is what really got me - it's a solid 14.1" that does not feel cheap but is not 1000 lbs. either. Really nice. The price only makes this an easier choice - GET IT NOW WHILE THE $100 MAIL-IN is still on!!!

Best of luck with your shopping, I know I love mine.
