5 out of 5 eggsLongtime owner

Pros: Beautiful monitor, fast CPU and Memory, great sound...really a fantastic gaming laptop for it's time. Crysis, Diablo, SWTOR now... all run very nicely on this machine in medium to high graphics quality.

Cons: When i first started the laptop i did receive the BSOD but after a graphics driver update (while in safe mode), it's run fine ever since. It also needed the Cross-fire enabled but that seems to happen after every GPU update. After years of use and abuse the only thing that's gone wrong with this is the dvd drive bay won't close properly anymore and needs fiddling to get it to latch, and a fan is beginning to get noisy (just needs a little oil).

Other Thoughts: I've never been happier with a laptop. I've owned the Dell XPS laptop as well before they went wimpy and i love them both.

3 out of 5 eggsIt finally happened, but we had a great time together.

Pros: Looks fantastic. Great build. Nice led lights, without blinding you. Fantastic graphics cards for it's time. Ran games in great settings. Lasted for 2 years after much abuse.

Cons: Display is awful, although it looks somewhat clear, colors are drab. Driver support was bad. 18 pounds of heavy (couldn't take it out of the house.) Problems playing games without the power supply.

Other Thoughts: It's the best laptop I've ever owned (I've owned 4). However I was a bit disappointed with it at the end. Even so at the begging. It ran most games at high (except crysis, empire total war, and perhaps 2 more), but now it's hugely outdated. Can't run Shogun 2, and barely the witcher 2. I'm not basing it on that, but most on the LCD screen, which had bland colors, and overall wasn't attractive. Driver support was awful, had to do some adjustments. It was impossible to take it out of the house, unfortunately. But I was able to, and... that was hard to do. Like carrying a 600 lb. man.

Note: Not on my review. It died about a week ago. 2 weeks ago my cd/dvd drive died. Then my video card began dying on me, and finally the motherboard. Decided to go with a desktop. Never buying a laptop for gaming again.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Powerful laptop for the price, although the price has gone up now. Two Radeon 4870 cards inside that work as a 4870X2 with a really old driver now. Solid laptop for really nice gaming. Supports pretty much any processor that from an X9000/X9100 to the quad cores that they come with.

Cons: Has only one single driver that works with it, and it is from Feb 09. There are some chaps that have made a way to slip into the Cat 9.4 drivers, but from then on nothing. Totally unacceptable for these cards! You can use newer drivers, but you wont have crossfire or the control panel everyone has tried.

Other Thoughts: Thats it, fantastic laptop that is totally handicapped by ATI and ASUS's lack of video card driver support. You cannot even mod a driver past cat 9.4 to get it to work, many have tried. If they ever fix that, then this laptop will be gold! Since we are now up to Cat 9.8 and the official one is 9.2, then I'd say they are not supporting it anymore.. Shame on you ATI!

5 out of 5 eggsHmmmmmmmm

Pros: Best laptop for the money period. Will run anything and can OC well for a laptop. Best GPU laptop interface. Forget the 280M. Way too expensive.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Mainly writing this because I dont understand the driver support gripes. Go to ATI and go get em. They are new this month and are fine.

1 out of 5 eggsDestined to fail

Pros: It "had" a good price.

Cons: This laptop is a bad buy, let me tell you why:

They designed the GPU to work like a 4870X2 instead of two 4870's in crossfire. So getting modded drivers for this thing will always be a nightmare for anyone who tries, because you cant just use desktop drivers with a new inf. To make matters worse Asus has refused to put out new drivers for thier odd setup leaving you with old drivers that will cripple your performance. As far as I understand they are discontinuing this model as well.

Other Thoughts: So basically: You will pay for a performance machine, and get a subperforming machine thanks to old drivers. You will have no hope of driver updates from the enthusiest community since they havent been able to figure out a work around in any new drivers for 4 months, and you can look forward to the graphical gliches these things are notourious for. Dont buy this thing it is a dead end.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

There is no need for modded drivers to get the system to work properly. Please download the graphics driver from our support site or follow this link to download and install the graphics driver; For further support, please contact our notebook support at 1-888-678-3688 opt.3, opt.1.

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsAll hail the uber laptop!

Pros: I have yet to come across a program that this computer doesnt jsut blast through. The game "Crisis" on extreme settings? no problem! Just hit the overclock button on this monster and there isnt anything it cant do. This bad boy also has an upgradeable, I say again, upgradeable CPU. it features the intel 775 socket, I'm planning on upgrading to the Q9650 3.0GHz.

Cons: The ATI Radion HD series is notorious with running hot, but the way they are designed they are, supposed to and this beast has 2 HD cards.

Power hungry: concidering it has 2 HD cards and a full sized desktop CPU it needs to be plugged in, even in power saver mode the battery lasts only about an hour.

Other Thoughts: Dont let the cons I listed deter you. This computer is a force to be reconed with. I have had several coustom built desktop computers and this laptop blows all of them away at a fraction of the price. Forget Alienware and Phoenix gaming laptops this thing is twice as fast at half the price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: First off, this computer is pretty fast. I've installed WoW, World in Conflict, TF2, & Sins of a Solar empire and can run them all at max settings with no probs.

The screen is beautiful (and HUGE!), which makes this laptop awesome for gaming. I love the keyboard, the key "action" feels more like a desktop than it does a laptop.

Also, for the specs on this laptop, the price is great.

Cons: Im not gonna talk about the GPU driver support since it has been already covered.

Media touch buttons are pretty cool, but I do notice that every once in a while during games i bump the volume with my pinky and mute the game. Not a big deal, been using the laptop for about 2 weeks and i rarely do it anymore.

Double Letter- its kinda weird, but while typing, especially when I type fast, you get double letters per press of the key. Not a huge deal, but slightly annoying.

The mousepad is mediocre. My biggest complain is the pad buttons are harder than expected to push. However, the laptop comes with a bluetooth mouse, which is small, but better than the pad.

Speakers are awesome for a laptop, but on mine, there is a slight rattle in one of the speakers, nothing horrible, but it is noticeable during certain audio situations (game intro, movie, etc.) I don't notice it while in game tho.

This thing is MASSIVE, and HEAVY, but u should expect that before buying

Other Thoughts: Overall, a GREAT laptop for the price, that is if you are more focused on a desktop replacement, and not concerned with mobility. Dont expect to just carry this around all day like any other laptop.

It has a few minor problems with it, but in my opinion, you cant beat the bang for the buck on this one. I would recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggsDominoe customer service

Pros: Fast overnight delivery, working components where good.

Cons: Ok heres where it loses all of its eggs, I was shipped a defective unit with one bad VGA card, so the crossfire would crash in most games. So I called NEWEGG, the first time I called I was advised to go through the manufacture, "ok I said to myself it is their hardware, Ill go through them this time." Now take notes, if you do this and once the manufacture opens your unit, it voids any warranties with newegg. I suppose thats not terrible, unless the manufacturer is takeing a Month to fix/replace your problem. Maybe Ill update this if I get a working unit back.

Other Thoughts: I build my own desktops and benchmark my computers, I identified the problem within 5 days of having the unit. Im mad at the manufacturer for holding my unit for repair for what will be a month next week; I'm also displeased with newegg(first time) for suggesting going through the manufacturing without telling me I was about to void their warranty. I then talked to a gentlemen that was going to give me a refund which I wasn't expecting because I know they usually only do replacements. I Was very happy, I honestly just wanted a working labtop for my upcomeing military deployment, which was delayed. Its been almost three weeks now. Major Cudos to that employee for being helpful, however when I called back to see if I could still send it in for replacement, thats when I was informed that the manufacture had voided my warranty.....
This will diffently impact my future purchases of expensive items, I by no means have lots of cash to be thrown around on paperwieghts.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerhouse

Pros: Excellent design and form factor. The body is heavy and durable, the aluminum finish is very sleek and sturdy. The screen is huge and very bright and vibrant.

The Q9000 is extremely fast and has excellent overclocking ability (mine runs at 2.6GHz stable, others have reported as high as 2.8). The pair of 4870s are high performers in even the most demanding 3D applications and games. It includes a hefty amount of RAM which is very useful for memory-intense multitasking and will be sufficient for the future (this is also easily upgradeable, although memory is kind of expensive these days).

Games run very well on maximum resolution (1080p) with high resolution textures and high to maxed out settings with good fps on most modern games.

The included backpack is very sleek and modern. It holds the laptop snugly in a padded compartment with the power adapter and accessories as well.

Cons: The driver support for the video cards is very lacking at this point with ASUS having not released new ones for a few months.

There is an issue with many of the units randomly displaying a black screen and/or locking up due to a 2D graphics glitch (this usually happens when doing mundane tasks such as surfing the web). However, there seems to be a fix for it now, disabling the "AMD External Event Utility" has permanently fixed this problem for many owners.

The touch buttons (volume specifically) are rather useless and in inconvenient locations (easily bumped), and accidentally hitting the music or movies buttons will likely put your current task in the background as ASUS' media software launches in full screen.

The ASUS software is generally ugly and semi-useless bloatware.

The speakers, while decent quality, are pitched differently and the "rear speakers" (actually side speakers, closest to the screen) sound distant. The bass from the sub rattles some keys when volume is o

Other Thoughts: If you're picking this rig up for gaming, it's an excellent choice. The 4870s are high-end pieces of hardware and the quad core processor promises future compatibility with multi-core games (as these are sure to be the norm in the near future).

If you are buying for a desktop replacement, you can't go wrong. The powerful processor and large amount of memory will be sufficient for at least a few years for normal computing.

This laptop is large: larger than I expected even. However, I love the fact that it's huge and heavy. It looks very intimidating and will likely wow your friends, if not trigger some jokes. I like seeing peoples' reaction to its size, though others might not like the attention.

It is by no means a good portable solution for everyday computing. For gaming, you should expect the kind of weight that the W90 carries, and most gamers will not mind lugging this beast to a LAN party.

For intense use, I recommend a good notebook cooler. I use the NZXT CRYO LX.

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up review - No graphics driver update since release

Pros: I've now had this laptop for 2 months. As stated in my earlier review, this is a great combination of high-end hardware for a reasonable price. I have never had a single crash, even with an OC. I like the design more and more as time goes on.

Easy to upgrade with another HD and blu-ray drive.

Cons: I'm going to have to knock my review down an egg or two.... No catalyst update since released in February (and the included driver, 8.6 is from mid-year 2008). I bought this with the assumption Asus would release at least semi-regular updates... nothing. Asus site only has the same sad, old driver from February. Asus reps have been stating an update is "so close" to being ready for three months now -- this is obviously lip service.

Generally, what this means for the w90vp owner at present is you will see decent performance in games that were developed a year ago or older (FO3, FC2, TF2, LFD). Many recent games perform with low FPS, with wonky graphics or won't run at all. Often, only one of the 4870s will be employed.

Considering this default, this laptop just is not worth the premium you're paying at present.

Other Thoughts: It's still a big honking beast. I'm kinda a husky dude and don't mind walking around looking like a geek. If you think you're going to want to lug this hunk of metal around with you to the cafe, on the plane... seriously, you're mistaken. Good for LAN parties, but otherwise will sit on your desk. This is not a con, just the physical reality of having a 14lb laptop.
