5 out of 5 eggsThis is a great laptop!

Pros: This thing is awesome for gaming. I installed Mass Effect on it and it easily maxed out its settings. I never encounter any stuttering, lag, or anything. It's just really smooth. This thing puts my current desktop to shame! I love being able to play any game I want with maxed out settings, anywhere I want. It came with a mouse, which I love. I hate those touchpads that all laptops have. A mouse is much better. Also, the bag is awesome. The laptop fits in the back pocket's little cubby thing perfectly. It does its job keeping the laptop protected too. I've taken the laptop out with me and it's still just as shiny as ever.

Cons: That said, because this machine is such a beast, it devours the battery. Going from a fully charged battery, I can get maybe an hour and half of life out of it. That's fine for me because I've only used the battery for short periods of time, anyway. I know that if I want the most out of a laptop, it needs to be plugged in.

Other Thoughts: Just as a note, this thing is huge and it's pretty heavy. It really doesn't bother me because the large screen is awesome, but it might an annoyance for some people. You'll probably use the bag it comes with to take it anywhere. Just keep in mind that this isn't the most portable laptop. If you're going somewhere with outlets, then you're just fine, though. I would recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking for a great deal on a gaming laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsG71Gx-A1 NoteBook

Pros: This is a very fast, burly machine. The graphics are stunning, the case is stylish and solidly built. Full size keyboard with easy to get to functions and well thought out with DVD tray on left to keep it out of your mouse pad. Genuine Asus value with this purchase.

Cons: Unit ships with a dual drive option and no Raid function. USB ports under doors on sides of case as opposed to the back. Not flimsy doors, yet highly likely to get sheared off at some point in the future. Direct Console message center did not work upon arrival. Did not care as no drivers as of yet for Windows 7. No Blue-Ray burner (ROM Only) Burns CD/DVD Great!

Other Thoughts: This is a great machine and I am always happy with my NewEgg customer service and attention to detail. I knew exactly where and when the order would arrive. Asus typical of all manufacturers bloat-ware. I blew out the 4 partitions on the drives and did a clean install of Windows 7. Great machine. Would purchase again and recommend highly.

5 out of 5 eggsoled problem but laptop rocks

Pros: after going through the oled issue, Asus advertising thier own product with this feature on their own website i still kept this laptop.

the quad core simply can not be stopped, its very stable and the features are wonderful.

Like my other 5 Asus laptops purchased only at Newegg this one is great...........

Laptop is very fast and with 64 bit o/s and free windiws 7 upgrade you cant go wrong.

Cons: only the oled display disabled from factory stinks being a Republic of Gamers series laptop.

other than this the laptop is worth keeping....

Other Thoughts: the laptop is so nice and works so good I simply could not return it just because the oled is not functional.

1 out of 5 eggsmy first bad asus experience

Pros: purchased this model first time and the OLED / Batt / Status above keys on left did not work and Asus support said send it back to Newegg so I over nighted it for 217.00 as I need this for business. received new one today went through same thing with Asus tech support telling me to remove direct console then reinstall it and it will work. After 3.5 hours Asus tech gets on phone and tells me this feature was disabled in the laptop and don't work. I spent over 300.00 in overnight shipping due to Asus support not knowing whats going on and I am waiting to see how Asus is going to handle this before buying domain names and helping them advertise not so nicely.

Cons: I have 6 Asus laptops, ONLY do my builds with Asus Maximus boards and have never had one issue with what I considered the best company on the planet until now. Asus's own website shows this exact model as does other sites (but i only but from Newegg obviously) and I have screen shots of this model on Asus website showing the batt/status/led working.

Other Thoughts: This is my first let down from Asus, I cant believe they show this image on thier site of this function working yet it does not work ... support acts as though its no big deal and for me to call back in a few days.........? your kidding right?

Looks like I may be very busy buying domain names to help others if Asus does not step up.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. However, the G71GX model does not come with the OLED display function. If you need any further assistance, please contact our customer service department at 1-888-678-3688 and we will gladly assist you with any issues that you might have.

Best regards,
ASUS SUPPORT TEAM

4 out of 5 eggsquad core laptop

Pros: quad core cpu helps the booting delays and waiting time, the screen size / clarity is incredible, two 320 gig drives are great and the speed while working was super until i realized the OLED (direct console) on the left above keyboard was not working.... I called Asus tech support and they said it must be hardware related and to return it. only thing that worries me is the last review, the guy said his OLED don't work either. I have 8 different sites of research showing this batt / status / direct console is suppose to work so we shall see. Paid for overnight shipping which was done and Newegg's service has been unbeatable for the last 6 years.

Waiting for new one to arrive tomorrow (Tuesday) to finally see if the status / batt / OLED is suppose to work, it make the Republic Of Gamers signature of anything cool like my Maximum Formula2 mother board which rocks my Q9550 at 3.99 on air all day and night at temps of 35 to 37C

Cons: Not one, all Asus laptops, motherboards and products outperform all other brands for me plus Asus is rated number one for laptops so why take a chance.........

Other Thoughts: thanks to Neweggs quality and concern for me I will receive my new laptop tomorrow thus allowing me to get back to my business and work with limited down time. even if I purchased this at the store (which i refuse to do) after driving, waiting and putting up with the mean people here in S. Florida I still couldn't find service and people that come close to Newegg and how they treat me as a customer.

Thanks Newegg

4 out of 5 eggsRed...meh..but fast!

Pros: Easily handles any games i throw at it, great graphics card - and i cant argue with the full HD display. 100% made to be a gaming or desktop replacement laptop. It also has enough drive space to not need to lug an external around - score! Like other Asus laptops you can easily control the lighting effects on the case, and express gate is super useful if you just need to sign on quick to get basic info and log off. The fans do an excellent job of keeping up, and it stays cool to the touch even after a few hours of gaming. (My friends other laptop gets so hot you can barely touch it). The smart log on tool is useful for quick log ins and i'll admit any computer that has facial recognition log in is pretty rad.

Cons: The red flip down doors that cover the usb and other ports are not the sturdiest and i can see them breaking down the road, there is no OLED secondary display like other Asus gaming laptops have - not a big deal but its a neat gadget. The q9000 cant be overclocked with provided software as claimed and turbo gear software will only let you switch from batt save mode to standard.

Other Thoughts: Worth Mentioning: I was sent this laptop as a replacement for my G70sg-a1 that i purchased from newegg by the Asus repair facility because they couldn't repair mine. I am not the biggest fan of the color RED and i will admit i liked the LOOK of my old laptop better. That being said - will i miss my g70? yep, but thanks to the g71gx-a1 ... not to much. :) The setup with the blu-ray and full hd screen makes more sense, the processor is better at multi tasking than my core2 was and i really like the graphics power. This laptop is overall a great gaming/ multimedia laptop and i can run all my games at MAX setting without a Hiccup. Bottom line i am super happy with the g71 and had it been available at the time i was buying my last one - i would have purchased this one instead. I'd recommend this to anyone... its pretty awesome and beats the hell out of other comparable gaming laptops on price.
