Size matters, no matter what anybody says, and sometimes smaller is better. Especially if you know what to do with it, and Asus does. The ASUS EPCS101B-BLK043X is designed for people that need lots of power in a small package. The Intel Atom N270 CPU and 1GB of memory run this Windows XP Home system with power to spare. A 32GB SSD flash drive with lightning speed boosts your system performance and saves power as well.

The 10.2" LED backlight screen has a 1024x600 resolution. Because of the smaller screen you can easily use it on a plane or train. The keyboard goes all the way out to the edge of the case and uses the user-friendly design for more comfort and less fatigue over prolonged periods.

Designed to be used anywhere there is a built in WiFi controller that supports 802.11b/g protocols. If there is no wireless signal around then you can plug into a standard Fast Ethernet connection. A webcam lets you have video chats. Thanks to the Bluetooth support, you can use a Bluetooth headset or plug into the audio jacks.

  • newegg Ultra Portable Netbook Powered by Intel Atom Processor Equipped with an Intel Atom processor, Intel's smallest and lowest power processor, the ASUS EPCS101B-BLK043X is extremely compact and lightweight while delivering the power and performance you need for full online freedom.

1 out of 5 eggsI am "Dear valued customer"

Pros: Great computer. But the adapter bricked in less than a month. Asus won't help.

Cons: I am the "Dear Valued Customer" addressed by Asus Customer Support above. I contacted them about my dead adapter. After waiting several weeks, an Asus rep finally got back to me. He asked for my information, then promptly replied that the warranty for my computer, which I purchased in May of 2010, had expired in 2009. He said he could not do anything to help me and apologized for the inconvenience. Apologized for the inconvenience of a dead adapter. Basically what I'm left with is a great computer that I can't get power to. And I'm not the only one. Search "Asus Eee dead adapter." There are countless others dealing with the same issue and getting no support from Asus. Check it out before you buy.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The netbook has a very sleek look to it. I happen to like the thin metallic frame and the glossiness of the unit. Much sharper than other netbooks I've seen.

The tab-like keyboard suites me very well, as I have larger than average hands and fingers.

Hardware wise, you get what you pay for. Can you really notice the difference between a 1.60 and a 1.66 GHz Proc? Maybe, to the very well trained eye. The 32 GB SSD runs just a tad better than a normal HDD. The Eee Storage is very cool and useful. You must take advantage of it.

Cons: Anywhere outside the keyboard is a finger print magnet. However, Asus provides a nice cloth that easily cleans up whatever is left behind

The touch pad mouse is a little too sensitive. Any light accidental swipes with a thumb or palm usually registers. This can become a nuisance at times.

Even with Windows XP and not 7 Starter, I wish the unit came with 2 GB of RAM. At various times, with nothing running but a couple background processes, it takes a few seconds just to pull up a window or run solitaire. This is with all the Effects turned off and Performance set to "best performance".

Finally the battery life is a little disappointing. With only 1.60 GHz Proc and a 32 GB SSD you would think the battery would truly have at least a 7-9 hour lifetime. That's just not the case. Even with the brightness turned down to -35, I can only get 4-4 1/2 hours of standard usage out of the battery. Not horrible, but lower than average.

Other Thoughts: To conserve as much battery life as possible, I suggest turning off or down all the extra visual specs and decreasing the brightness of the monitor. It's very bright to begin with and it won't affect anything.

Download Google Chrome as your web browser. IE8 is extremely clunky on netbooks due to the low Proc and RAM. Chrome is flat out faster and better.

With only a 32 GB SSD, get rid of as much bloatware as possible. I was able to free up at least 3 GB of space by doing away with some pre-installed software.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat netbook!

Pros: I looked at different nebooks for a long time before getting this one, and am very pleased with it. I'm running the Ubuntu Netbook remix on it, and it ticks along nicely. The build quality is great, I love having equipment that looks and feels nice to hold. It has the best touch pad I've ever used - usually I can't stand the things, but this one is pretty tolerable. With an SSD and Ubuntu, mine boots in ten seconds and shuts down within five. I may never own a platter hard drive again.

Cons: I'd like to see more than a four hour battery life from a netbook like this, and the battery seems to drain very quickly when the lid is closed (nearly as quickly as when it's in use). The wireless range is limited. The speakers are tiny, as you'd expect, but they're also very quiet. You'll need external speakers or subtitles if more than one person at a time is going to watch movies on it.

Other Thoughts: The eeePCs have the best combination of affordability, function, and openness to modification, and I think the S101 hits the sweet spot of form, function, and price (now that it's dropped from the original $600).

1 out of 5 eggsAdapter bricked

Pros: perfect except adapter

Cons: I've had my eee for about a week. Woke up one day and the power adapter had overheated, which, after some research, have found is common among EEEs. It just won't work. The plan now is to find a replacement. One that doesn't brick in a week. There's several forums around about the problem. Be aware of this before you buy it. Was disappointed there was no comments on Newegg about it. Have always trusted Newegg for complete info.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issue you are experiencing with the AC adapter. Does the LED on the power brick come on when you plug it into the wall? Please contact us at and reference case number NE0510 so that we can assist you in obtaining a replacement adapter.

5 out of 5 eggsstardust

Pros: boots right up to desktop in 30 seconds. is pretty zippy most of the time. its great having music playing while looking at a few tabs on the internet and maybe typing something in open office

Cons: difficult to gauge battery life.

Other Thoughts: sometimes youtube videos lag, but that may be from trying to multitask too much. diablo 2 works fine.
in hindsight i would have went with a cheaper netbook that boasted higher battery power.

5 out of 5 eggsGood netbook for the price

Pros: The SSD is cool kind of a small drive but its super quiet.

Cons: I would say install ANYTHING but Windows XP, I ran XP on this for the first week I had it and it was so dog slow I was about to throw it out of the window. I installed Ubuntu three days ago and its like night and day this thing is incredible now.

5 out of 5 eggsWoo-Hoo

Pros: SSD - the fact that this thing has no moving parts is a HUGE plus. The thing feels speeder then my aging laptop with a faster 1.8ghz p4. It is very light, and seems well built, even the packaging it came in looked good. It has a very sleek design, and is great for couch surfin' and the occasional video chat. Even plays movies at an enjoyable level.

Cons: I had to reseat the wireless card to get it working properly, no big deal as I upgraded the ram to 2 gigs anyway, which was also very easy. Sound isn't that great but with a headset it's just fine. Fingerprint magnet. Not a powerhouse, but if you read the specs you know that.

Other Thoughts: I wiped XP off right away and put Ubuntu on, everything seems to work just fine. I use it as an extra machine that I can carry with me everywhere. I keep all my media on a network drive so I don't even notice the small SSD. Do yourself a favor and get a travel mouse and headset with this. All in all I am very happy with it.

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best netbooks on the market

Pros: SSD - you may sacrifice storage space but it is well worth it for the increased performance and durability. also it's a 32gb drive which is much larger than the standard 8 gb ssd.
10.2" screen. I upgraded to this from the ASUS eeepc 701SD. it had a 7" screen and 8 gb ssd.
It has a very sleek design.

Cons: sound could be better but it's not bad enough to remove an egg.
Has some issues connecting to certain types of encrypted wifi. when connecting to WEP it will not say it's connected but will still work online. when connecting to WPA i got limited or no connectivity and no networking worked. connects just fine to WPA2. i've always considered ASUS to be top of the line in quality and this is kind of disappointing. Maybe they'll release a new driver to fix the issue.
Fingerprint collector!

Other Thoughts: I've got some other devices that don't work with WPA2 so i just took off my encryption and set up a MAC address filter.
changed out the 1gb stick of ram with a 2gb stick.
It took me about 3 months to decide on which netbook i wanted. i'm very pleased with my choice. I wanted the brown model but newegg didn't have it in Jan when i purchased it. Price dropped $70 since i purchased it.
Price may be more than most netbooks but it is worth spending the extra money on this.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome

Pros: Generally an awesome travel box. Loaded Fedora 11, runs great, ample space on the 32gb ssd for travel purposes. Weight is great, not much more than the original 701, screen size/resolution is adequate and keyboard is quite usable. Touchpad is improved over past models.

Cons: Power adapter is not as compact as past Asus eee pc adapters.
Have to pay for windoz. Speaker sound could be stronger (headphone is fine). The atom processor could be a little faster (for video in particular). Shiny case not an issue. The carrying bag which comes with the machine is overkill in that it is too bulky. I bought a generic HP bag which fits in my carryon better. SD flash slot is in the back which is slightly inconvenient.

Other Thoughts: Would like to see more boxes with either linux preloaded or no OS loaded at all. Why does one HAVE to buy windoz when you buy a machine?
