4 out of 5 eggsGreat Portable Laptop

Pros: Battery Life: 6-10 hours for most tasks. long batter life is a must for me and it passes my expectations.

Weight/Size: Super light and skinny very portable! fits in my backpack no problem and without the battery it becomes a featherweight.

Appearance: sleek, stylish, glossy screen, easily passes for professional or cool

Utility: many one-key features from wireless, to sleep mode, to power management (power4gear). express gate is slick when you're on the go. After removing bloatware, you can start using it in about one minute from hitting the power key to logging in to win 7. I don't have password so that also helps. Asus includes many software utilities I find useful such as the MultiFrame(autoresizes windows to specific corners). Ram and hardware specs give it good power. Chicklet keys feel good.

Speakers/Sound: Well done, they're loud and adequate for a laptop.

Screen: glossy and sizeable. the colors are brilliant and you can switch between color modes on the

Cons: Craft: Plastic components used can be somewhat cheap. Had a corner of mine break from hardly any stress.

Track pad: can be hard to use and sometimes latches onto windows or starts highlighting text when you don't want it to. elantech changed the amount of things you can do with it. useful things like three finger page swipe for internet navigation are gone :( .

Camera: .3 MP camera is not good enough. For whatever reason, ASUS has started making the .3 its standard on netbooks and laptops instead of the 1.3. There is marked difference in performance. I planned on using this laptop for skype video chats with family and friends but the camera is aweful. Even so, it was a compromise I was willing to make.

Screen: fingerprint and dust magnet. There's no way around it. luckily, you don't notice when you are facing it only when it's off. Also, at times i will notice little squares on the screen because the dust that gathers on the keyboard gets on the screen when closed

Other Thoughts: This is my first real laptop. I upgraded from an eeepc 1000HA which was a little too slow for the things I was doing. Once I got this thing, the difference was clear in terms of performance, utility, aesthetics, and so on. I chose this laptop because I wanted the portability of a netbook without the sacrifice in power (and a bigger screen is nice). What made me pick this laptop over others was the ASUS brand, the accidental damage coverage, the price, and specs. This laptop is great for general computer use and some light games (think Halo PC). People do complain about using the track pad but I've gotten used to it and I think it handles well (but I love sensitive mice). One thing that ticks me off is the camera. This thing was almost an all in one package for me until I tested the camera, now looking at externals or trying to find a way to solder an integrated cam. One good thing: express gate is useful and the thing will turn off in 3 seconds on EG and 10 secs from Win 7, no joke

4 out of 5 eggsGreat battery life and portability

Pros: This laptop is perfect for those looking for a small laptop without making all of the netbook compromises. Its battery will easily last six hours with rigorous use (gaming, video, photo editing) and ten hours or so with browsing, word processing, and other processes requiring little system resources. It fits into my old Jansport backpack and is easily handled with one hand. It does not heat up to the point of being uncomfortable (ever). It plays high definition movies without any issues and automatically optimizes resolution when connected via HDMI to all the HD TVs I have tried. This computer also boots up ridiculously fast compared to my brand new (2010) work laptop (Dell Inspiron (model?) running Windows 7 Pro). You can boot it and sign into Windows in about a minute.

Cons: This laptop is not for one who wants a gaming/high performance computer (though I have played the Starcraft 2 Beta on low graphics settings without issue and it handles multiple low resource processes well) or a computer to watch dvds/use cd/dvd software (no optical drive; I bought an external drive for $40). The touch pad is not stellar, but I'm not sure I have met a touch pad that I really preferred to a mouse yet. It had bloatware (what laptop doesn't?) and its hard drive came partitioned oddly (two partitions nearly equal in size; it would make more sense to have a partition around 100-120GB for the OS and other software and 350GB or so for data... my opinion), but both of those are excusable.

Other Thoughts: I love this laptop. It is the first I have dealt with that is very portable and comfortable in any setting (at home on the couch, at school and in cramped quarters on a jet). I considered a netbook for a long time, but I am happy I went with this laptop. The only thing that could improve it (for me) is an 80GB solid state hard drive to increase battery life and an eSATA port for faster transfer to and from an external hard drive.
I bought this laptop from an online retailer that rhymes with bamazon(Newegg didn't have it at the time) for $700... so make sure you shop around.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat battery life, with compromises

Pros: Great battery life and surprisingly good performance in a very compact package. Playing 480p WMV files with brightness at 40% and no wifi, I get 6.5 hours of continuous playback. With a second battery, transatlantic flights should be much more enjoyable now. For office-type tasks, 8-10 hours per charge should be easily achievable.

I am also able to play 1080p h264/MKV files via the HDMI port with no stutters or other problems. HULU similarly plays at full screen without issue. And in all of these tasks, the laptop never seems to get uncomfortably warm or become noisy.

It is also quite thin and light, and slides easily into the same bag with my 15.4" DTR laptop.

Cons: As reported in the reviews of the other UL30A variants, the trackpad is truly awful. It is way too sensitive and jittery. Just holding my finger motionless on the trackpad causes small erratic movements of the pointer. I can reduce the mouse speed down enough to remove the jitter, but then it takes 10 full swipes to get the pointer from one screen edge to the other. Or I can remove the ELAN driver, which fixes the jitter, but also removes palm tracking and auto-disabling with an external mouse features. ASUS and ELAN should be ashamed of this. But apparently they don't care or can't fix it, as there hasn't been a driver update for this since 30-Oct-2009, in spite of this being a common complaint on their user support forums.

Beware that there is no high-speed external data bus available. The ethernet port is 10/100 only (no gigabit), obviously no eSATA port, and the USB 2.0 hard disks run about 20% slower than with my desktop or DTR laptop.

Other Thoughts: This laptop comes with the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, so you will get full use of that 4GB of RAM. It also comes with a bunch of other bloat-ware that takes hours to uninstall.

I purchased this as a travel companion to my larger DTR laptop that would actually fit on a tray in coach while still having enough horsepower and battery life for playing movies, music, or as an ebook reader. I am tired of trying to do these things on tiny smart-phone screens. This laptop works perfectly for these tasks, so even with the atrocious trackpad, it is a keeper. I don't plan on using it for office or engineering work...and certainly no gaming.

I also purchased a second/spare battery from newegg. I figure get it now...the main one will wear out in about a year.
