5 out of 5 eggsMy Best Lap Top Purchase

Pros: 1 - Fantastic battery life
2 - Great performance
3 - Light weight
4 - Many outputs and HDMI
5 - No bloatware

Cons: 1 - The built in mouse/track pad is terrible
2 - The built in mouse buttons are terrible
3 - Design is pretty, but a magnet for finger prints

Other Thoughts: I have had this laptop for about a year now and I love it! I can edit videos easily on the go, do web surfing, play games - everything I would do on a desk top. If you want a great work or play lap top on the go with stamina - this is it! To be honest, this is the perfect lap top as I see it.

Well, almost perfect. The trackpad was terribly designed. It takes a lot of patience to be able to use it and then the button is built like a rocker - middle clicks don't do anything. It is highly annoying.

However, this is not an issue for me as I have a USB portable mouse that I plug in 99% of the time - which I would say is a must with this lap top.

4 out of 5 eggsOver all the perfect computer, however

Pros: - 14" making it the perfect portable computer, eg. School
- 11hrs battery lifetime, and this is true 11hrs. Reaching about 9hrs, last the whole day
- SU7 and LED, this lesser battery usages
- 4GB of ram, plenty enough for the usages that the computer is though for. This is not hardcore gaming nor 3D rendering.
- G210 for when you need better graphics performance, GMA when you need the battery lifetime.
- HDMI, 3 USB and SD slot
- Great performance using SSD.
- Very light

Cons: - Terrible touch pad. Never used anything like it.
- To make it light, its made mostly from plastic. Feels really cheap.
- Fingerprint magnet (not really a cons, doesn't bother me and they get of as easily as they get on..)
- Optical Drive, I stopped using disks 6 years ago. Disks are not the future and I would get rid of the drive for an extra hour of battery life. This is NOT a real cons, most people would prefer it.
- Fan is audible at quite places, this is a shame since its always cold.

Other Thoughts: - People point out a bad screen, please be more specific. This is not an IPS screen. This viewing angles are not bad at all. Those who find their screen being miserable should probably check if their screen is not working properly.
- The keyboards is good, however it took me few days to get used to it going from my IBM T43. If I could swap them I would, but I would probably do it to every laptop I'll ever touch.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible customer support

Pros: When it works it is great - problem is that it doesn't.

Cons: Poor quality and terrrible customer support. Screen went in less than 6 months and it took hours on hold with customer support that keeps hanging up on you and not calling back. The worst customer support I have seen!

5 out of 5 eggsMeets my needs

Pros: -Long Battery Life (can get 7-8 hours if not pushing it hard). I've only watched one movie on batteries and had plenty left, I probably could have watched a second or more without a problem.
-Relatively light weight
-LED backlit screen
-Good size screen
-Wireless N & Gigabit Lan
-Reasonably fast, the "turbo mode" does speed it up (runs a bit hotter), I've only really used this when on AC power so I don't know how it effects battery life. Don't expect to convert movies to mkv files in record time, though it can be done. Virtual machines run a bit slow.

Cons: -No Bluetooth
-A little large to use in the economy section of airplanes, useable in the "plus" size rows.
-The touch pad takes some adjusting to be useful (for me it was to lower the sensitivity)
-4Gb max RAM.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this machine for deploying to Afghanistan for a year or two. I upgraded to Win7 Ultimate partly to use bitlocker only to find it is not supported, which is OK since I have long used TrueCrypt and have successfully implemented it. A wireless mouse is a mandatory addition for my use patterns and would have preferred a bluetooth mouse without something in a USB port (check out logitech, they have some very small USB "plugs" for their notebook mice). The hard drive is small for my needs, I will likely upgrade to a 500 Gb hybrid when I return to the states with the hopes that I may see some speed and battery life increase. I haven't done any gaming, but with the discrete graphics, it should hold it's own. Three months after my purchase, I'm not sure there is another laptop in this price range I would rather have.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Graphics
-Webcam(w/facial reg)
-nice keyboard
-Price-/mine was on sale for 780
-Good construction
-Battery life(when set to not sleep or hibernate I hit 14 hours)

Cons: -Not Backlit Keyobard
-Speakers could be louder
-Touchpad only has one button with no set definition of left/right click
-could use more USB
-coulda used another headphone port

Other Thoughts: This Little thing is amazing on batterysaver settings i would watch a dvd with headphones for 7.5hours! Plays some new game well and plays old ones flawlessly if you use dedicated graphics. Expressgate has a 9second boot for instant web, and same button can be used to switch graphics on/off.Also touchpad looks alot like the computer itself so if you are not used to it in a dark room touchpad is hard to find.Also- the top is kind of a fingerprint magnet but not as much as people say.

4 out of 5 eggsA great lap top!!

Pros: 1. Power management is fantastic! It comes with many built in modes that easily allow you to run your device for hours on end. The fact that this laptop can switch from a conservative mode using an intel graphics card to a high performance with a Nvidia card is great! So far it has handled everything I have thrown at it with no problem. On high usage on Entertainment mode I get around 8 hours of life, which is more than I had ever experienced on any lap top. Based on what I read it can get 11 in the battery saver mode.

2. The keyboard and layout for this device is excellent. Feels very comfortable to type on.

3. Has HDMI output, which transfers both audio and sound to my plasma TV on HD - pretty sweet!

4. Has 3 USB ports, a standard VGA port, SD card.

Cons: 1. This laptop has a strange mouse pad and button setup. It looks cool but functions awkardly.

The mouse pad you have to get used to it, it has a textured surface that is seamless with the rest of the laptop. When you first use it, you have to get rid of the sticker, then use some goo gone (carefully) to take out all the left over gunk.

Even after, it will still be awkward. The trick is you have to be soft on the mouse pad. If you press into hard it doesn't pick up well.

The mouse button is awful. It is one big button that functions like a rocker (imagine a see saw). So if you want to left click, you press towards the left - right click towards the right. The problem is that anything with the middle doesn't respond. I'm used to clicking towards the middle of a button, not the outer edge. This can be a frustrating experience at first, but you can get used to it.

This is a bit of a nuisance, but still a usable. Normal windows use is no problem. For high precision, get a US

Other Thoughts: I read other reviews and I saw the mouse pad and button problems, and that didn't really worry me - because I use a USB mouse anyways. What did scare me was the display comments. I was worried that the screen would be awful and make the product experience terrible.

Thankfully that was not the case! I can be standing at 170 degrees and still read the screen. I didn't notice any issues my first few days using it.

After playing around with it for a bit, I have made some observations. Yes, there is some color loss when the screen is not directly in front of you, particularly the vertical angle (open/close) but I have never used a lap top that didn't. I had played some movies and tested out a game and it looked fine. Perhaps if you are a hardcore gamer or artist and require perfect color reproduction, then maybe you might have some concerns.

For my needs, I use word processing, video and graphics editing and internet. It does everything wonderfully. Very happy. New egg rocks!

5 out of 5 eggsLight, versatile, powerful, efficient.

Pros: This laptop is powerful enough for anything I've asked it to do so far (completely smooth at full graphics settings on Flight Simulator X), yet once it comes off the charger it becomes an incredibly efficient long lived platform. The battery holds 5600 milliamp-hours as opposed to my last computer's 4300, yet it achieves 3-4 times the battery life my old one had. It's also very lightweight, so it's easy to carry around in classes all day long.
Bottom line, it's performed flawlessly so far (6 months), and I could not be more happy with it.

Cons: There really is nothing I am unhappy with on this computer. I do notice that while working on Word documents, if I also ask it to spin up the hard drive and play me music from iTunes the battery life estimation rapidly drops by about a third. So the one thing I think could improve it is the addition of a Solid State Drive, as the low power usage would fit well with this computer's mission. Once a 128GB comes down to $100-200 maybe.

Other Thoughts: The processor stats say they run at 1.3 GHz, but after hearing some rumors and looking into the settings on my computer, I found that they are actually overclocked to 1.7 GHz from the factory.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: ASUS UL Series are awesome. They look good and last forever. Mine lasted through 3 presentations ...a 10hr day. Love this thing. They always impress. The trackpad is great once you get the hang of it as are the power options.

Cons: HDD is slow and an SSD would prly tax battery more.

Other Thoughts: Might be worth swaping out the HDD w/an SSD. The P128 would be cool w/this machine.

3 out of 5 eggsBe Aware!

Pros: well made, Battery life is long, plays 720p videos smooth(even 1080p videos with some tweaks), processor can be overclocked to 1.7 with some modifications, comes with windows 7 64 bits.

Cons: DRIVES!!!!! theres no drivers yet for the video cards!!!! there is no support from nvidia or intel!! I though I can use the nvidia Optimus drivers.. ta taaa! nope no luck.. I was expecting it can be supported by nvidia verde drivers and again ta taaa no luck! I been reading the others Ul50/80 series laptos reviews and they complain about screen quality and bad touchpad... for me the real problems are the DRIVERS! i bought a Intel ssd to upgrade my HDD no luck, probably I need a BIOS update.. !!! but theres no updates on asus website!!!!!
I'm disappointed with asus!!

Other Thoughts: Overall is a good laptop, just consider the 'drivers' problem before u buy this.. Asus must tell everybody the lack of drivers around this laptop.. if they get updated drivers for us, this laptop will be a almost mac killer... good luck if u buy this laptop guys!!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsexceptionally good

Pros: The distinguishing factor for this laptop is the dual personalities it can accomodate:
lightweight travelers laptop with 9-12 hrs (that's right 9-12) battery life. in power save mode and then its graphic prowl and processing power when its plugged in.
Combined with the light weight and reasonable screen size (14.1 in) . The fit and finish are reasonably high as well with the aluminum back panel and glossy black. overall chic design

Cons: The touch pad does take some of its glory away. In an effort to achieve the chic factor, Asus lost some of the tactile feel and precision a good touch pad brings to a laptop. The touch pad buttons are also the single bar see saw type design. Again form over function.
The chassis flex is noticeable under extreme conditions (i.e. pulling it in and out of a laptop bag at the airport inspection points)

Other Thoughts: As an I.T. professional who travels consistently and runs demanding programs on occasion I find this laptop untouchable for its price. Despite the drawback with the mediocre touch pad. I just use a wireless mouse most of the time. If you need a laptop that can do it all and not kill your shoulder in your laptop bag.. its an automatic.
