Bad ASUS Customer Service

white Reviewed By: jonnyd on 1/8/2010
Rating + 1
Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Awesome specs
Cons: Bad customer service on ASUS part
Other Thoughts: I received this laptop a a replacement for my G50 that i bought on NewEgg because the could not fix the motherboard.

After receiving this one the 2nd day windows became corrupt and i needed to use the recovery disk. Well that didnt work, it just flashed a big screen that said ERROR. So then i had no windows. I called them and asked them to send me the install disk, they said i had to RMA it. WHY CANT YOU JUST SEND ME THE DISK. I then just bought a copy of windows and installed it.

After loading all the drivers the illuminated keyboard doesnt work and i have no options to put it in Turbo mode. The dropdown doesnt exist. Support then tells me that the illuminated keyboard is an option for that model and the one they gave me doesnt come with it. I have never seen it ever advertised as an option.

Now im stuck with another faulty laptop, and it seem all their laptops discontinue really quick do to all the problems they have.

Excellent Gaming Laptop (with nitpicks)

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: * 15.6" 1080p screen is gorgeous. I'm a huge proponent of high-DPI (well, PPI) screens, and the smoothness is just wonderful.

* Set to higher-DPI out-of-the-box. Windows 7 handles DPI better than any previous edition, so higher-resolution screens can run at their native resolution and still be easy to read. Apps that aren't DPI-aware are smoothly scaled up, and the effect isn't as jarring as it was in the XP days.

* Powerful. This is the only notebook on newegg with the new Core i7 CPUs as well as NVidia's GTX 260M, and you can feel it. I play Modern Warfare 2, EVE Online, Left 4 Dead 2, Borderlands and others on this system without so much as a single hiccup. Video transcodes are quick, and there's no problem playing 1080p h264 video either.

* Cool to the touch. Other laptops I've owned, even non-gaming laptops, would have very hot surfaces on the top and bottom of the base. This one is cool to the touch on both sides. No more hot palms or laps!
Cons: Pros (cont):

* Air coming out of the side vent is warm, but not hot, even during long gaming sessions. My other laptops would make you feel like you were getting burned if you put your hand next to the vent; meanwhile, I commonly use the vent on this notebook as a hand warmer.

* Minimal preloaded software. Asus has some of their apps on here by default, but most are useful in some way and not overly annoying. MSO2007 trial comes preloaded, along with a few other third-party apps. I don't remember if it came with an antivirus or not, but if it did then I removed it. I'm currently using MS Security Essentials.

* System feels solid and sturdy, for the most part. I like the rubberized palm rest, though I'm not particularly fond of the glossy black around the keyboard. General design is attractive

* Comes with a carrying backpack, AND a re-branded Razer Copperhead mouse!

* Dimming backlit keyboard. Attractive lighting effects on the lid. Dual HDDs. HDMI, eSATA, four USB.
Other Thoughts: Cons:

* HDD partitioning is silly. This is easily mended in the Disk Management console in Windows, though.

* Media controls are limited to Fn combinations. This is especially annoying since almost all of these require either two hands or some creative finger-stretching.

* The touch-sensitive special-function keys are cool but serve no radically useful function. I would much rather have had these functions moved to Fn combos and moved the media controls to the touch controls.

* The screen's viewing angles are rather poor. I often find myself readjusting the screen or my head position to get the best view.

* The clear plastic for the lid's lighting effects feels rather flimsy.

* Battery life is dismal at around an hour, plus or minus 15 minutes depending on conditions and usage.

* Office 2007 trial comes preloaded, but I can't use my MSO2007 Professional key from MSDN to activate it (I still haven't figured out what keys it will accept). Have to reinstall with mine.

Unreal performance

white Reviewed By: on 1/7/2010

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: *Excellent high-def lcd screen, great clarity and color.
*FAST Memory/CPU/GPU combo!
*Excellent keyboard and touch pad!

This is simply the best laptop I have ever owned. It has just about all the bells and whistles I could want! It runs WoW flawlessly with all the settings maxed(minus shadow detail). I don't have any heating issues!
Seriously for the price you can't find anything better! Even the twin 320GB hdds are great quality! Usually laptop companies slap in cheapo/SLOW drives, this baby comes with 2x 7200RPM Seagates.

For a gaming laptop this one really isn't big and bulky compared to other brands(such as Toshiba or Alienware). In fact it's quite portable with the backpack carrying case included with the purchase.

The gaming mouse included is also nice, made by Razor with the RoG logo on it, I'm a fan of logitech, but this is also a great mouse.
Cons: The only things I didn't like or wish were included:

1) The A/C adapter is large and cumbersome, but is to be expected considering the power behind this laptop.

2) Although this laptop has 2x HDDs, it does not support RAID! This was a large drawback for me since generally hard drives are the worst bottleneck on a PC's performance and using a RAID 0 really unlocks a computers potential.

3) The system comes pre-loaded with tons of junk installed! Using up something like 45-50GB of disk space out of the box! The factory also partitioned the drives into 4 separate 180GB segments.

4) Comes preloaded with Windows 7 Home 64bit, sorry but I prefer Pro 64-bit.

Other than these minor things this system really is awesome.
Other Thoughts: What I did for best performance, bought the Intel GENII 160GB SSD hard drive. Installed it, reformatted, and loaded Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Updated to the latest drivers and bam, pure joy!
