1 out of 5 eggs17 in paper weight

Pros: none

Cons: this laptop has been cursed since I got it out of the box (BSOD) and as of a week ago I believe the motherboard died. Paid $714 for a laptop that lasted barely 3yrs. this will be my last ASUS

1 out of 5 eggsBad repeated BSODs

Pros: Not a bad computer when it is not BSOD. Also, when I actually have it in my possession. It spends more time at ASUS repair for them to reinstall the OS.

Cons: Bad BSOD issues. No resolution. Poor Customer Service.

Other Thoughts: Just want a resolution.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Well Built Machine!

Pros: This laptop is good for entertainment and is able to run many games without breaking a sweat. The computer is easy to use and well built. Good amount of ram and huge hard drive. Good sounds as well. The LCD screen is big and has very good detail

Cons: The problem that I found is the extra software that was installed on the computer did not need. The battery life is short between 1 hour and 30 minutes. Be warned that old printers may not work on Windows 7.

Other Thoughts: I recommend that you get this laptop before they stop selling it. May want to get Windows XP for older printers. Does included a restore disk for Windows 7 for both 32 and 64 bit versions if you want to format the hard drive into one partition.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Large display, easy on the eyes. Feature packed for the price.

Cons: Speakers leave a bit to be desired.

Other Thoughts: The location of the touchpad feels off to me. Yes it is centered on the machine, but with the full keyboard, the feeling is that it is too far over. I may be crazy, but that has been the hardest thing to get accustomed to with this machine.

2 out of 5 eggsLemon

Pros: It's a physically gorgeous model, nice 17" screen, nice big keyboard, good price. It mostly works as a computer, and has not exploded, melted, etc. It is largely reliable for what I've come to use it for, which is to say word processing.

Cons: I have problems with this machine locking up both on Windows and Ubuntu. After driver and BIOS updates, this problem persists at a low rate. The CPU/fan get surprisingly worked up when I play flash videos, and it seems to have some overheating issues.

This isn't with high-performance gaming, this is with a machine I mainly use for websurfing, wordprocessing, and playing videos.

I have the touchpad turned off in the BIOS, because it's kinda twitchy and pretty bad. Nevertheless, the touchpad turns itself back on after I close and re-open the lid.

Battery life isn't so hot, either. I'm sometimes out after less than two hours from a full charge ... with the sound turned off and the monitor on the dimmest setting.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good battery life for a large screen notebook. Great speed and ease of use. Booted up in December, used everyday by a college student, has never froze or needed to be powered down unnecessarily. I have had several Asus motherboards, all have been outstanding. I had heard Asus quality was going downhill. This notebook seems to prove otherwise.

Cons: Like most 17 inch screen , this notebook screen seems slightly flimsy. Other wise near perfect.

2 out of 5 eggsFairly Happy, but BSOD, and crackling!

Pros: Huge beautiful screen, works quite well when no BSOD. Runs fast. Surprisingly good battery life given the monster this machine is. Win 7 is very nice, but that's a given. Warranty seems amazing- gonna have to take advantage of it.

Cons: BSOD!, worked well for the first 3-4 weeks or so then the BSODs starting happening at random times. Then more frequently. From what I have read online, this seems like it is a hardware issue that ASUS needs to take care of.

Crackling!- What on earth is that? Sometimes when I close my laptop without shutting it down there is a crackling noise that seems to be coming out of the speakers, but not sure. Just scary to hear from your brand new $700 laptop.

Other Thoughts: I like the machine when it works right, but the few issues are big deals to me. I will be contacting ASUS support and taking full advantage of the warranty. Hopefully I will have good things to report on that experience.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat but...

Pros: good system overall but...

Cons: I bought this in Nov. '09 and had the constant BSODS for the first month till I flashed the BIOS to the new version and that solved the problem.Ok,everything is gravy right?Well it was up until 2 weeks ago when whenever I would burn a disk they would be fine, then 1 wouldn't work then it started happening more and more often till now it will not burn anything be it DVD or Data.

Other Thoughts: I have an HP Pavillion DV9000 series I bought 2 years ago with roughly the same specs that runs circles around this piece even running Vista with only 2GB of Ram.ASUS...you really dropped the ball on this one! "I won't even go into the fact that while I type the cursor jumps around and some words are before others and it will jump to the beginning of the sentence with the text from the middle or end!"...Oops.

4 out of 5 eggsbeautiful laptop!

Pros: beautiful laptop. Fast, plays online flash games that bog down my older pc flawlessly. Screen is absolutely gorgeous, very glad I went with the 17.3 version. Ridiculous warranty. If they stay true to their warranty claims I may never buy another laptop from another company again..............as long as this kind of warranty remains. This should be industry standard.

Cons: the only con so far is the ****ing bloatware. The thing did a windows update and than locked up and had to restore. Only happened once so far but I'll bet it happens again. Battery life is average, but I may end up buying a higher cap cell myself in a year so it's ok. Don't keep this thing on a bed, has to be on hard surface that ventilates. The fans are good on this thing but you can tell they work overtime when you've got the thing on the bed.

Other Thoughts: Gave this a 4 egg only for the software issues which have already been discussed. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a full disk from asus so that I can completely wipe the hard drive and start over? Also, I would like to ask asus support if I need to register the laptop in any way for the warranties?
