5 out of 5 eggsOver 2 Years Later...

Pros: Nearing 3 years of use on this laptop and it's still running as strong as day one with the exception that I did finally drop Windows 7 on it, which was a wise move. I've also had a duel boot setup with Windows 7 and a variation of Ubuntu and no issues(until a linux update trashed GRUB and I had to re-install MBR). Even with a current Linux this thing works with no problems.

From Windows 7(have not tried Windows 8 yet as I simply do not have a copy of it yet to try, but did try the Windows 8 previews in a virtual machine on this laptop under Windows 7 and no problems there) to Linux, from MS Office to GTA San Andreas and from Netflix to Sony Vegas Pro this laptop has taken everything I've thrown at it without even blinking.

Cons: The only real con here is that this laptop is seems to be no longer available to purchase. :-(

Well that, and the flashy annoying lights on this thing. But that can be resolve by going to going to the ASUS site and tracking down the software for this laptop which has a control program for dealing with the lights.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop for price

Pros: - Great specs for price (Decent Video Card and CPU)
- Great case design, puts my Clevo to shame
- Full size keyboard with Numeric pad
- Screen looks great, even for 1440x900

Cons: - Fan is loud, especially as CPU temps rise (Especially in upper 40s C per RealTemp)
- The laptop that I received wasn't in mint condition with some scratches on cover and dirty stickers, but still functional. As noted from other reviews, laptop seems to a little dirty on arrival with hair, human debris, etc. (However nothing that wasn't cleanable with can of air and some alcohol)
- Non-Geniune Windows Vista shipped with laptop, though solved with Windows 7 reinstall

Other Thoughts: Fortunately, other than the fan noise, I seem to have gotten a good unit with no double tap keyboard keys or flickering screens. Mouse pad works well, but I prefer to use laser mouse for all my computers. However, I plan on replacing the fan in the future if it continues to be noisy.

Playing Dragon Age Origins at full settings presented no problems for this computer to handle at max 16:9 settings.

As for the video card heating issues, it seems like this was a problem even back then, however they modified the BIOS since 07/2009 to keep the laptop from shutting off when it gets hot. However, I feel as long as you are playing on an ideal surface (flat, hard surface like wood or metal tables) the heat shouldn't affect gameplay (unless you like keeping your legs warm on those cold Winter days).

Overall, I'm glad that I got a good unit, props to Asus and Newegg.

1 out of 5 eggsFirst ones a dud

Pros: Specs are great
Feels like a very solid machine

Newegg Customer service to the rescue and replacement on the way

Cons: BSOD on first boot
Mem test Showing hardware errors
Can't get wireless up and running
Popped off the cover to pull stick of ram and discovered machine was obviously tampered with. Screws were loose, Warrranty void sticker was torn on the cpu retention system

Other Thoughts: I feel that if if you get a good one this thing is incredible. I will follow up my review with a subsequent review of the new one.

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome price for a great laptop!

Pros: First off you must remember that these are refurbished. They will not, in my opinion, be prefect.

- Impressive style
- Graphics card is a huge plus
- Big beautiful screen
- Boot up and Shut down is fast
- This is an A+ mobile gaming laptop if you travel
- A quiet laptop

Cons: I only list these as cons but this doesn't take away from my gaming experience.

- My function keys do not work, at least from what I can tell.
- I had a hard time looking for the "Wireless" on and off switch...its not in a good spot.
-Windows Vista

Other Thoughts: My ASUS G71GX-RX05 came quickly to my house after only 48 hours of purchasing. Out of the package there were no major scratches or anything. After examining it closure I found that the back vent apparently in the past had gotten so hot that it warped the plastic. No biggy...but put this bad boy on a fan! Especially if you are gaming.

Whoever refurbished this laptop, did not put a Genuine Windows Vista software on the laptop. Annoying, but I had an extra copy of Windows 7 that I was going to put on my desktop.

3 days after it arrived, I went to boot it up and the fan inside the laptop was making a loud noise. Almost as if it were struggling. I quickly shut it down an blew air into the space were the fan is. It hasn't made the noise since, but I fear it has a bad fan. Thats were the warranty comes in nicely! I will update later.

5 out of 5 eggsthe best deal on newegg hands down. :)

Pros: Easily overclockable with provided software. Even the GPU can be overclocked nicely after a quick asus bios upgrade. Great machine, and plays any game on the market.

Cons: None really. Some may find the 1440x900 resolution is a bad deal but honestly, do you really want to squint at 1920x1080 on a 17 inch screen and stress your GPU???

bought 2 of these, amazing deal.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic laptop!

Pros: This laptop is great, plain and simple, at first I was concerned that the laptop I would receive would be dirty as some other reviews had stated, boy was I wrong, this thing looked brand new! Runs all my games (WoW primarily, but I play a lot of FPS as well and it can run them all) Fantastically, the price is right don't miss out on this great laptop

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Love this thing..

3 out of 5 eggsForgot a few things

Pros: Great Specs

Cons: Get a COOLER. This baby runs hot. Newegg has a wonderful alum cooler that has been working perfectly.

I would imagine two things with these units. Some may be best buy models that had a paid for warranty that replaced them come heck or high water.

Because of this warranty, some were overheated, blew up, and some were dropped.(mine included) So this explains some of the feedback regarding condition.

Other Thoughts: Worth the price, but upgrade to Win7 right away and avoid double duty on updates for vista and win 7

Total cost with Win7 oem was roughly $560. That is a deal for this unit.

3 out of 5 eggsHeck of a deal

Pros: Great price for the unit. I purchased this unit elsewhere for a few bucks less only because it came up on their website first. NEWEGG is far superior. Unit Plays most games on high settings very well. Huge screen and key board. This baby is BIG.

Cons: Like all ASUS refurbished, u never know what u are going to receive. The one I received was defn beat up. Missing rubber stop on screen and it had been dropped on it's corner. Given who I bought it from and only a 90 day warranty, it was not worth sending in. I am living with the minor dammage for the price. HUGE ....weighs a lot and won't fit in any standard computer bags. Needs a mega bag.

Other Thoughts: At least the parts were all installed unlike the last ASUS rehab I purchased. I had to install parts laying in desktop unit. Many of u will remember the Refurb ASUS CG 5290s with I7 processor. One heck of a computer once fixed up.

There is no doubt it is a deal. Instead of going through days of updates for vista, I purchased Win7 Pro oem on sale from newegg and installed right away. Then went through days of updates. Unit works perfect. I would buy again, this time from newegg and if you receive a wrecked one, they will take it back right away, just the hassle to deal with.

4 out of 5 eggsit's alright.

Pros: the physical condition of the computer is very good. i usually don't mind scratches anyway. but few are visible.

Cons: it had previous owners things still installed. profile and all. i had to re-install the windows myself, which was pretty inconvenient.. basically it took me over an hour just to get started with the computer.

Other Thoughts: lol i was looking for USB ports and audio sets for EVER!!! i almost became emotional after flipping the computer upside-down and left to right for 5 minutes, and looking through the websites to make sure it does have them... and then figured out that i had to open the sides -_-;; HAHAHA i feel dumb.
