5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Balance of Size and Performance

Pros: I am a fan of the chiclet style keyboard, screen is very bright for a laptop, screen hinges seem sturdy, love the brushed aluminum lid and palmrest, quiet, fairly lightweight, not too small or too big. The dedicated graphics isn't fantastic, but I can't imagine serious gaming on that screen size anyway.

Cons: Black plastic around screen smudges easily, but is an improvement over many ASUS laptops made entirely of that same plastic. I found switching between integrated and dedicated graphics somewhat confusing, and I'm disappointed that it's not as customizable as I had hoped. No eggs deducted though, because the computer does actually switch between them reliably.

Other Thoughts: This laptop seems to get the same, if not slightly better battery life from the dedicated graphics card when doing some light web browsing or using microsoft office programs.

5 out of 5 eggsVery balanced, lightweight notebook

Pros: -Excellent battery life (assuming you use the appropriate built-in and simple power settings). I usually get 3-4 hours during gaming and 6.5-7 if just surfing the web/typing.

-Good balance between graphics/processing power and portability

-Sleek design (brushed aluminum)

Cons: -Quiet speakers. Laptop speakers are never phenomenal, but these are more quiet than normal.

-Bloatware. Lots of it. Irritating, but I had it all removed in about 15 minutes.

-No recovery DVD! A program is provided to make your own, but this would probably be my biggest reservation.

Other Thoughts: I bought this laptop for light gaming, word processing/net-surfing etc., with a possible eye towards a bit of audio/video editing. So far it has performed admirably, no hardware problems at all. If you don't plan on playing any games, I would recommend looking elsewhere as you could save a good bit by going with just an integrated graphics card. It was a bit pricey, but I'm really satisfied!

In regards to some concerns that noticed other reviewers had when I was researching this model:
-The "soft" keyboard has not been a problem... typing on it feels natural
-Screen and glossy black plastic does collect fingerprints....which are easily wiped off using the shammy provided by Asus in the box.
-I have not needed to interact with Asus's customer service department at all, so I have no comment on that.

Also: YES, this laptop will easily run StarCraft II on medium graphics settings. High settings work too, but can cause the computer to stutter during online play.

4 out of 5 eggsdecent laptop

Pros: Pretty fast, inexpensive.
Outside is pretty.
Battery life is really long - I never have to think about plugging it in.

Cons: Keyboard is squishy.
Screen is really shiny and fingerprints / smudges easily.

Other Thoughts: Decent laptop. I don't have the emotional connection with it that I had with some previous laptops. Maybe I'm just getting older.

1 out of 5 eggsExtremely bad Asus support!!!

Pros: No opinion since product has been with Asus since I bought it

Cons: * Asus posted a bad bios (V210) on their website, which caused the laptop to no longer boot. This required a motherboard replacement.
* Asus' repair facility broke a cable during the replacement of the motherboard. Replacement cables are not available.

Other Thoughts: I opened service # 861335 with Asus. In the past 7 days, I have spoken to 3 customer service agents, and two supervisors (Allan and Judy) for countless of hours. There is nobody at Asus that can tell me when a replacement cable will be available.
Due to this ridiculous situation I requested a replacement notebook - which was also refused.
So, gross incompetence and a total lack of customer care at Asus is what I am faced with. I do not know if I will ever get my laptop back in a working order. Therefore, be careful in your product selection. While a laptop might work OK, should it break is when your nightmare will start!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Bought for college. Not there yet, but toting it around so far has been a breeze. Very portable: screen is just the right size, and it's pretty light. Plays all the games I want it to. Very well-balanced in general. The battery life is the icing on the cake. I can take this out for the day and just leave the cord at home. I would definitely take this computer, over a computer that was better but with short battery life. It's just SO convenient.

The look of the laptop is something I can really appreciate. The brushed metal does not attract fingerprints. Love the keyboard. The trackpad is just a trackpad, not some media shortcut monstrosity.

Cons: Preinstalled bloaty junk. Be prepared to uninstall all this junk before using the laptop. No recovery disk, not even a plain copy of Windows 7, which is frustrating at the least (there is a CD with drivers on it, but that's all). Wish the screen was anti-glare. Dislike the buttons for the trackpad, but that's sort of personal preference. I thought I had avoided the glossy black plastic, but they put it around the screen, which also loves fingerprints.

This thing does not feel extremely sturdy. Mainly, the top half with the screen is pretty thin. If you're planning to be rough with your laptop, get a thinkpad instead, because I don't know how much abuse this machine could take (not willing to try, either).

Other Thoughts: All of those cons don't add up to enough to subtract one egg for me. This laptop is absolutely perfect for my uses, which do not involve very intense gaming, so mileage may vary. When I mean perfect, I mean I have absolutely NO regrets in purchasing this laptop.

So, in all: Portable, attractive, and powerful enough to satisfy the casual gamer.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty good

Pros: -Awesome battery life
-Brushed aluminum plating

Overall its a nicely built laptop.

Cons: The SRS sound premium glitches at times. It seems to be more of a hardware issue because it'll occasionally lag the entire system and cause the music to freeze up for about a second. Then it continues going. When this happens, the system locks for that brief second, no mouse movement, movies stop etc.

Looking for a solution.

Other Thoughts: The price is a bit much... Probably could've bought a slightly less powerful lappy for a couple hundred dollars less but the graphical power is nice enough to not make me want to send it back for a different one. :)

5 out of 5 eggsNot a bad laptop at all

Pros: I went to this 13in laptop from a 15in dell with 1 hour of battery life. Needless to say, I'm impressed. The thing is ridiculously fast. I tossed in a 120GB SSD from day 1 and this beast flies. It plays TF2 and other source games like a champ. I'm hoping it'll handle SC2 without a problem, but I assume it will.

Cons: -Not the best Screen. This thing has pretty lame viewing angles.
-Fan makes odd rattling noise. I'm not sure why, but the fan just seems to make an odd rattle. When I squeeze the laptop together near the fan, it stops making the noise. Maybe something's just not tightened completely. Never had a problem with cooling, though.
-Wish Keyboard could be illuminated. There are no dedicated buttons for volume or screen brightness, so when the lights are out, I can't see what keyboard shortcuts control what. Lame.

Other Thoughts: This is the first laptop I've spent over 600 dollars on and I think it's very worth it. I was contemplating this or a 13in MBP. Both are very worthy of your money, but I feel like the optimus and i3 edge the MBP out by juuust enough. Being 300 dollars cheaper doesn't hurt either.

5 out of 5 eggsasus u30j

Pros: Very cool lappie, battery life is nice but if ur straight gaming will last like 4 hours. The laptop is a solid build stainless steal construction. It also comes with adw so that means u can drop it break with hammer or throw in ur fireplace and asus will replace one time for one year. I did this actually the first day i had it i dropped a shandaleer on it and it sucked, cracked the lcd the shandaller weighs like 50 pounds. No clue how it didnt toast the whole lappie. Anyways very cool lappie... other options the alienware 11 inch. NO WAY get this laptop if u r on a plane and want to game with cool battery life. Very small kinda heavy but thats because its got alot under the hood

Cons: None that i can think of....

Other Thoughts: BUY IT its freaking cheap compared to other lappies this size and as a matter of fact there are no other lappies this size with this mpower

4 out of 5 eggsTerrific machine

Pros: Fast, very nice display, discrete graphics card for extra oomph when needed, surprisingly good gaming platform, has a DVD burner. Basically, ditto on all the other positive things that the other reviewers have said.

Cons: Three things detract from what otherwise could be a perfect system:
1.) No recovery DVD shipped with the system! You have to make your own recovery DVD set, and it takes hours. Worse, it requires FIVE (5) DVDs, presumably to hold all the crapware that ships with this system.
2.) As mentioned above, lots of bloatware, shovelware, and crapware. (Take your pick.)
3.) I was thrilled to find a notebook that wasn't that horrible glossy black that seems ot be all the rage these days. I HATE glossy black and though that I had escaped it with this system. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that there is a glossy black bezel around the display. Yes, it's a fingerprint magnet (as this garbage color always is, but it gets worse. It scratches extremely easily. I wiped it with a B*unty paper towel at the top, and now the top bezel is covered with a zillion small scratches. Grrrrrrr....

Other Thoughts: Why do computer makers still insist in putting that lousy glossy black on their systems? I may be wrong, but it seems to me that pretty much everyone hates it and complains that it shows scratches and fingerprints far too easily. There was no need to include a glossy black bezel on this display when the entire system is otherwise silver.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: - Battery life: While it's too early to give a long-term average, the battery life is estimated by Windows to have anywhere between 5 and 8 hours.
- Chiclet-style Keyboard: It will take a little getting used to if you, like me, have never used one. Still, the keys have a great tactile feel and resistance.
- Portability: While I realize this laptop is on the high end for weight in its class, it is VERY comfortable to carry. Carrying the laptop under one arm is no strain whatsoever, and even with a case and various accessories the weight is comfortable.
- Performance: While I have not tried any processor intensive games or run a stress test, from a light gaming, office, and web surfing perspective this laptop ran nicely.
- Build Quality: The brushed aluminum top looks/feels great. The keyboard feels good, and no part of the laptop has ridiculous heat accumulation.
- Great Key Functions: Great integrated volume, brightness, power, and other controls.

Cons: - SOME Awkward key functions: For some reason, the laptop would occasionally switch languages to Taiwanese on me! This language is built into the Windows system, presumably because Asus is a Taiwanese company, however for the life of me I could not see which key combo I had pushed to swap languages! Fixed simply by going into control panel, languages, and uninstalling all but English.
- Rear-left Heat Vent: While the machine runs very quiet, there is a vent that releases some heat. If sitting in a certain way, this COULD be against your leg and be uncomfortable. Really a minor inconvenience.
- Smart Logon Tech: Great concept to just log in using facial recognition, but in reality there is a lag for the interface and camera to turn on and face dectection (so far) has been spotty. This may correct itself with time as the camera gathers more images of the user, however.
- Bloatware: Recommend running a software cleaner right out of the box to get rid of the annoying software.

Other Thoughts: - The Palm Proof Technology seems to be all hype from my experience. While I have used laptops in the past, I never properly learned how to place my hands without brushing the touch pad. This, while not a primary selling point, seemed like another good reason to buy this laptop. My palm touched the pad at least a dozen times, moving the mouse anyway. Perhaps this tech just minimizes how much the mouse moves?
- Good for a student laptop. I will be using this as my college laptop for next year, and it strikes a good balance between the ability to play some games and write papers.
- Screen is not quite big enough for serious gamers. Go for a 15 or 17 inch if you want to play any shooters/ twitch based games.
