4 out of 5 eggsperforms like a beast, but had to RMA for HDD

Pros: This is one powerful machine, and you definitely get your moneys worth out of it. Performs very quick, runs everything I've thrown at it so far, runs a lot cooler then most laptops, and despite being a lot larger then most, its still quite easy to pick up and go without being too big and bulky. However....

Cons: ....after about 3 days, one of the two HDD's died on me, and I had to send it in for an RMA to get it fixed. ASUS is taking care of it though, and they were very helpful and quick to act. Just don't bother emailing them if you have a problem, I sent them a message 5 days ago and still haven't gotten a response, calling is the for sure way to go.

Battery Life is also very short, I managed to get about 2 hrs out of it unplugged just surfing online, and I imagine it would sink a lot faster if I were doing some heavy gaming, but hey, this is built to be more of a desktop replacement then anything else, so I expected that going in.

Other Thoughts: If it wasn't for the dead HDD, it would have gotten a 5, but that forced me to drop it a rating for dying in such a short time.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Dual hd, will be replacing one with solid state. Supper fast. Great gfx (will play most games in high...GTA4 is limited by the amount of video memory) Rear vents so it will run fine on a bed, a lap, a table or carpet. No cooling pad needed. Awesome look. Huge hd screen. Way more power then you need to run netflix. HDmi out works great.

Cons: Maybe its just me and the temps may be inaccurate, but furmark showed some very high temps in testing. Laptop seemed very stable but I stopped the test at 90C It does not seem to get as hot under extream gaming. In gaming the gfx fluctuates a lot instead of staying maxed out. I knew this going into it, but no firewire :( Not gonna remove an egg since the specs are clear.

Other Thoughts: All the people complaining about the OS disks. The bloat ware pays for windows, just uninstall it. As for disks, it only takes an hour to make them and if your so concerned about drive space, just delete the restore partition. Its like this on almost all new laptops. Don't take a ways eggs for something that is pretty much industry standard. I uninstalled all the bloat then imaged my drive using free 3rd party software, so if i need to restore it will be post bloat state. Some of the bloat controls the over clock and screen mode so its not all bad (fresh copy of win 7 will disable this). So really are you gonna knock eggs off for an hour of dvd burning and 30 min of bloat removal?

Also, if you get the infamous loud static ishue, just uninstall the creative XXXXX software and re install the latest drivers.

5 out of 5 eggsstealth bomber

Pros: Rather cool for a lap top.
Rather fast for a lap top and nice Video card for a laptop.
Comes with a manual overclock button in top left of keypad which is very nice! Its a BEAST. The a3 has 4 drives even thou the specs say 2x 500gb hd they are dived into 4 seprate drivea OS C:/ and 3 others which makes it nice to organise what goes where like all operating programs on the os drive and one drive for steam and its games since i have alot. the other two are for other games and such. Its ruberdised on the keyboard and the top panel so no smears. The mouse that comes with it is good mouse and is ruberdised too. Plays most games on highest setting. Has 3 settings for the back lit keyboard. Has a blue-ray which is really nice to have when i deploy. its a big screen and nice resolution for a laptop its size. VERY sturdy. And its more than a shiny stone it can performe like no other laptop and beats simular laptops by price and performance. Best buy on the market right now.

Cons: Eh its heavy thats about it but when you pack this much awesomnes into a laptop like this its bound to be heavy.

Backpack inst big enough for all the junk i have =P i have a camping bag for that.

Other Thoughts: My rig got to me in good conditon which is very nice... if it craps on ya well it can happen if ya got a bad one but the good thing is that asus gives you a 2 year waranty and a 1 year accidental coverage for FREE! now you cannot beat that deal. thats a $200-300 insurence coverage for free i mean come on this thing is allrdy a bargain and they give you a good mouse and backpack AND that kind of warranty thats the best freaken deal you can find around right now for all the stuff they put in this package. You gota crazy not to say its not a good deal for a top of the line laptop. This laptop will defently give you a BIG BANG for the money you pay for it. Couldn't of asked for a better deal. If you don't have space for a desktop like me this is a great buy and heck of alot cheaper than a desktop varient that you could design. its about $400-500 cheaper (surprisngly) than a desktop.

Haven't gotten a chance to open it but suposabley this is 4 ram slots.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow up - Continued

Pros: Solids laptops, great speed, super quiet, even after my little problems I recommend this as a purchase.

Cons: Finally got my AC adapter replacement, took over 2 weeks from start of RMA to receipt of replacement which is my only complaint.

My wife's 2nd hard drive not showing was a simple fix... It was never initialized (something about Win 7 and plug and play) just had to go into control panel and initialize it then format it. Took 5 minutes.

Other Thoughts: Other than the slow (but fair and courteous) RMA process for my faulty ac adapter, and fixing the hard drive on my wife's computer, I still maintain these computers are purely awesome.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat.. almost!!

Pros: System is great when it worked, fast processor, lots of RAM, video card is outstanding. No heat issues, nothing of the sort.

Cons: Primary HDD failure after one week, cause is unknown. Will not boot, will not detect in BIOS.

Other Thoughts: Sending out my RMA today. ASUS personnel states 10-14 business days (minus shipping.. since I am located in the Middle East).. we'll see about that

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice lappy, great value

Pros: *Has all the bells and whistles, very little this machine can't do. Fast as lightning and some of the best graphics I've seen on any PC.

*Sturdy and stylish; quiet keyboard; nice backlighting.

*Runs amazingly cool, neither the laptop nor the power brick get all that hot.

*Blu-Rays look unreal. Almost as good as on my 46" Samsung.

*Really great value. This is a 3000 dollar machine priced at under 2000. I feared the low price would compromise the quality but this is one of the sturdiest lappys I've worked on. Up there with Sony and Apple in terms on sturdy feel.

*Windows 7 is class.

Cons: *Heavy sucker, the battery weighs about 5 pounds by itself.

*Comes loaded with an obscene amount of trash on the HD. I can understand Asus programs that they want to promote but there are at least a dozen third party programs taking up a significant amount of space on the C drive.

*Have a suspended pixel :(

Other Thoughts: Overall really good product. Hopefully it will stay stable, will update if it blows up on me ;)

1 out of 5 eggsMore Ridiculous

Pros: Update***

Cons: Update*** Asus, after having my brand new laptop for 3 weeks with no updates on the RMA process, contacted me and asked me if I would accept a replacement unit. Hesitant, I accepted. The replacement unit was said to be the same model and would arrive in 5 business days. 7 business days go by and I receive, not a brand new unit, but a refurbished unit. I was not made aware that the replacement would be a refurbished unit. I paid full price for a NEW computer and now I have a fully-priced refurbished, used computer. I have sent an email to the CSR that contacted me stating that I would contact the Better Business Bureau and leave a review , such as this, if they did not fix this. Please beware when dealing with this company as their ethics are seriously skewed.

Other Thoughts: BEWARE!

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up on Purchase

Pros: These really are great laptops, no complaints about the config or how the hardware runs. Very beautiful and quiet.

Cons: I bought 2 of these, 1 for me, 1 for my wife. 3 days after getting them my AC brick died. After going through Asus Customer Service I had to fax a form out to RMA the AC brick. Good customer service, but really slow response time. It said the RMA would be processed 48 hours after receipt. I faxed it early Monday, was not processed and item shipped until Thursday. And it will take until following Thursday to arrive.

My wife's laptop and AC brick however have been fine. But... I got on it the other day to put all her music on it for her and noticed the second 500g hard drive is not available. Will be calling Asus tonight and see how they want to proceed. My wife is loving her laptop and does NOT want to send the whole thing back and wait for a new one so hopefully this is something they can walk me through.

Other Thoughts: Really awesome laptops, but what are the chances that 2 out of 2 would require some sort of customer service in the first couple of weeks? I have always loved Asus products, and they are great regarding RMA's (had a mobo die after a year but still under warrenty and they replaced it no questions asked). But having 2 out of 2 have problems has really got me discouraged.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat performace for the Price!

Pros: The performance of this laptop is really great, I must say that the Core-i7 processor is worth every penny. I really tried to stress the system out with a lot of diff. applications and games, every single game or aps ran flawlessly, video encoding and conversion are are really fast, the 8 gigs of RAM definitely help. The on demand overclocking button is really cool and extremely useful when extra computing power are needed. It's also a great way to save battery life, as you'll find out that this lil sucker eats the battery alive. The laptop has a great matte shell, no finger prints. cooling fan are silent and does a fantastic job of removing heat.

Cons: The power brick is is a tad bit heavy and big. Battery life are short, but this the price we pay for performance.

Other Thoughts: overall this is probably one of the est laptop you can get on the market right now for he price. If blu-ray and 8 gig of ram are not that important to you, I say go with the A1 or A2.

4 out of 5 eggsFollow up review....still a great system

Pros: See my previous post

Cons: Something I forgot to put in my original review that is very important to those planning on watching Blu-ray movies. You MUST update the ATI driver, but downloading the latest version and installing it over the current driver won't work (very weird). In order to update the driver, I had to completely remove the video card driver and all ATI software from the system, reboot, and download the driver fresh from ATI/AMD. Once I installed the new driver, it played Avatar on Blu-ray perfectly. Why wouldn't they ship this with a current driver? I ran Cyberlink's Blu-ray advisor and the awesome video card in this thing apparently had no HDCP monitor capability and an incompatible driver. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO strange, but at least the new driver did the trick.

Other Thoughts: If you have a Windows 7 disk, do yourself a favor....format the drives, install Windows, and use the driver disk provided (except for the video card; download that fresh from ATI). The machine will run way better than without the unneccessary garbage on there.
