5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy

Pros: Battery Life!!
Quad Core
RAM
Bright Screen
Brushed Metal Top
Plays 1080p Video

I've been using the laptop for about 4 months now. I don't have any complaints with its computing performance or value. I'm a huge computer geek - I build my own desktops when I need a new one, and I'm studying Chemical Engineering and need to run a lot of engineering/computation software on my laptop. Honestly, I quit playing games for the most part a few years ago, so I'm not sure how well this handles the latest games.

Bragging Rights:
It does play 1080p video just fine, which actually bogs down many of my friend's more expensive computers. The CPU and RAM or both robust enough to never be a bottleneck for me. Quad core is awesome, I can def notice a difference over dual-core! Most of the time I can set the Asus Power Management software to run the processor at "25%" and that's all I need. Sometimes I'll notice the computer getting bogged down and click "High Performance" and then everything r

Cons: Glossy Screen

My friends all make fun of me for having a ridiculous number of tabs open in each browser window (15-40 tabs/window any given time, usually 3-5 windows). This rarely even uses half of the computers RAM.

Top of case is brushed aluminum. Looks nice, feels nice. Easy to clean and doesn't pick up scratches. Screen is glossy, and really hard to watch video in a car, outside, or near bright windows. Screen is really bright, indoors I can set it between 0-25% and I can see everything fine. Colors look best at 90-100%.

Most of the time I get 7-8 hours of battery life if I remember to leave it in "Battery Saving" mode...I may have gotten 9 once or twice. This means I carry it in my backpack all day long, and leave the charger at home. Multiple flights with layovers? No stress. Sometimes I use it as a portable music player in my backpack, turn on Pandora, put in some headphones and walk to class. It picks up different WiFi networks from various campus buildings and keeps..

Other Thoughts: streaming the next song. I wouldn't recommend it though, high temps inside a backpack will shorten battery life quickly and permanently.

Sometimes online video is corrupted and looks like the old-school scrambled cable TV. Pretty sure this is because I haven't updated my Nvidia drivers.

Another cool thing is the power management software allows you to change what happens when you close the lid. On some settings, I make it stay totally on, so I can set up a HD webcam in class and record the prof's lectures without having an open computer on my desk annoying the instructor. Friends love it when I can email them the class they missed. Battery life rocks for this too.

1 out of 5 eggsFollow-up on my first review

Pros: When it works as it is intended to work, which is hardly ever, it is pretty fast.

That's about it.

Cons: Well, I have quite a different view on this laptop now that I have owned it for longer than 2 weeks, when I wrote the first review for it.

This laptop has a multitude of problems, some of them are extremely bizarre and I see no way to fix them.

BLUE SCREEN - This laptop gets it all the time. At least once per day, sometimes two. The laptop will bluescreen in the middle of ANYTHING and cause the laptop to restart.

HORRIBLE WIFI - The laptop randomly and periodically loses Wifi connection. It's mostly only for a split second, but it's enough to interrupt all internet connected programs. It will "reconnect" after about 4 seconds, but it takes up to a full minute before any data is sent or received through the wifi connection.

On top of the random wifi disconnections, occasionally it won't reconnect to the internet at all, requiring me to put the laptop into sleep mode and then bring it out of sleep mode to force it to restart the wifi.

Other Thoughts: More Cons:

RANDOM OPERATING SYSTEM PROBLEMS - The OS has some sort of problem with certain programs trying to be installed. Since I don't know what it is, I can't explain it very well so I'll just give an example:

When I try to install the Python programming language, it throws some fatal OS exception and cancels the installation. Oddly enough, it also does the same thing when I try to install something simple like Windows Live Messenger. I see absolutely no way to fix this myself.

Note that this is NOT a Win7 problem, it's something ASUS has done. My friend's HP laptop, which I wish I had bought :( does NOT have any sort of problem like this.

DRIVER ISSUES - When I try to update drivers, for example the latest Nvidia drivers, the laptop crashes on startup and requires an OS recovery. ASUS does not update their own drivers so I'm stuck with old drivers.

Please, Asus, if you are reading this, replace my laptop or give me a full refund. I'm seriously disappointed in y

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Small. Great screen; I don't think it says in the specs page here that it supports larger resolutions, but I connect it to my 26" monitor at 1900x1200 and it looks/works fine.

The machine runs fast, but I am not doing any real harsh number crunching on it or anything. Just normal web, video, email, photoshop, dreamweaver, music stuff, etc.

Someone listed the battery fitting loosely as a con. I would put this under the pro section. Just think about 5 years from now when you want to buy a cheap battery from China online; you will know it will have room to fit. Also this is really nit picking over 1 millimeter. The thing is in there just fine.

The chiclet keyboard feels good; it is enjoyable and easy to type on.

The laptop looks suave when you take off all the silly stickers.

Cons: Runs a bit hot if you keep it in one place on your bed or cover up the fan area.

As the other commenters said it comes with a lot of pre-installed Asus junk that you don't need.

One other gripe I have is that it doesn't come with an operating system install disk. It just asks you to make a dvd system backup when you start windows...

The battery doesn't seem to last very long if you're playing videos or music and doing lots of stuff. 4 hours max in the asus "high performance" (battery wasting) mode. The battery saving mode will give you more time though.

My only complaint about the keyboard is the location of the left control key. I got used to it after a couple days though.

When I plug in USB peripherals on the left side the whole board inside kind of moves downward slightly. So far this hasn't been a problem and I hope it won't be in the future.

Other Thoughts: The weight is okay. It's not too heavy, but maybe like .2lbs overweight. Not a big deal; it's worth it for the dvd drive.

The thing fits in my small miwok backpack. So it's tiny enough to carry around conveniently.

Overall this is a great laptop. I am definitely happy with my purchase and would recommend it to my friends.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop

Pros: Very slim, lightweight, great screen clarity, fast processor, plays most newer pc games on low to medium settings

Cons: Had to uninstall a lot of bloatware (not that big of an issue though)

Other Thoughts: Once I got most of the trials and unnecessary utilities uninstalled, the computer worked great. With a battery life of 6 hours on normal operation and 10+ if you use the included system optimizer, I can't find much of anything to complain about on this laptop. If you are looking for a good mid-range gaming laptop or a great everyday use laptop, this is your best bet for what's on the market now.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Laptop!

Pros: Great little laptop. i3 cpu with HT is always a plus. I'm able to run all the applications with no problems. Battery life is great and the design of the laptop is beautiful.

Cons: 5400rpm HDD. A bit on the slow side so I replaced mine with a WD Black Scorpio.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Laptop!!

Pros: Very fast! The Core i3 370M flies through anything!
Extremely light! I couldn't believe how light it was when I first picked it up!
Overall look of the laptop is top notch. The keyboard works great and is pretty sturdy. It may seem wobbly in the middle but it's strong. The touchpad is one of the best I've ever used on a laptop, and the multi-touch gestures really help a lot!

Cons: The nvidia optimus drivers need a lot of work on them. I tried installing nvidia's latest drivers for them and, somehow, it caused the whole operating system to crash. After booting into windows the laptop would freeze and I had to remove the battery to get it out. ASUS doesn't have very new drivers for this laptop either...

I wish this laptop came in a 15.6" version because I really wanted a numeric keypad!!

Other Thoughts: Great laptop except for the nvidia optimus problems. However, that's a fault on nvidia and not asus, for the most part, so I won't knock off an egg for it.

I should also note that the laptop seems to use an unusually high percentage of the RAM. After a fresh restart, I'm using 40% of the physical memory. That's around 1.5GB. An operating system shouldn't use that much memory. Also note this is after I removed all the bloatware from the laptop. (Which only took me like 15 minutes to remove it all)

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Powerful for the size.
Ultra Light, weighs a slight bit more than my co-workers Netbook.
Optimus works as advertised and does provide the extra battery power desired during long term outings.
Good advertised warranty.
Screen is great for its thin appearance. Appears to be sturdy.
Looks great.
Runs quiet.

Cons: Battery appears to seat somewhat loosely. Almost as though there is a ridge in the center allowing it to shift back and forth.
Keyboard leaves some to be desired after long term typing. Can produce uncomfortable results if your an individual with a stronger finger stroke.
USB locations and the Optical drive are stiff to seat devices and the tray.
The single bar action of the touchpad is tough to get used to, and at first will provide some difficulty getting used to.

Other Thoughts: Newegg as always provided great shipping. I bought this laptop as a travel friendly unit with power behind it. I however feel my money would have better been put into another UL80 from Asus. This is basically a miniature version of that laptop, I do feel they may have sacrificed some of the overall quality to achieve that result. As a previous owner of the UL80 laptop I would have to recomend it over this unit.
