4 out of 5 eggsExceeded Expectations

Pros: Size/weight are perfect for a laptop. Screen size is perfect, not too small not too big.

Cons: Keyboard is a little flimsy (thats why its not a 5 out of 5) not a solid as the rest of the laptop

Other Thoughts: I use this for work and school and it performs flawlessly. Somehow Asus has figured out how to make this thing boot really fast and come out of sleep mode with no OS issues. Great job Asus. Now, about the keyboard....

5 out of 5 eggsUL20FT-A1 - great laptop!

Pros: Great build quality!

cpu only 1.2GHz, but overclocks to 1.6GHz. Great performance for such a small cpu!

Cons: stock hd was crammed w/ useless software. replaced the hd w/ an SSD - the laptop flies now!

viewing angles on the screen arnt great.

Battery life is pretty bad - i only get 2.5-3hrs on a full charge.

Other Thoughts: I dont take my laptop out of my house much so the battery life doesnt bother me. i love it for its small size and weight. the cpu performance is incredible. Windows 7 boots in about 20 seconds w/ my SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsClose to perfect

Pros: Very solid build, excellent keyboard, a Synaptics touchpad, beautiful screen, able to pick it up with one hand, dead quiet, at full load it only gets warm. The size to computational power ratio with this unit is stunning. This is easily twice as fast as a 2.5Ghz Penryn class machine I recently got rid of. The back of the screen has a brushed aluminum look and it really feel solid in your hands with no perceptible flex. Even the webcam performs really well.

The Ethernet port, described here as 10/100 is actually an Atheros 10/100/1000.

Cons: As much as I love Synaptics touchpads (vs. any other kind), the single rocker bar that tries to masquerade as two buttons is a crime on a machine that is so well designed in almost every other regard.

No Bluetooth. Who doesn't include Bluetooth these days?!? What does it cost, about a nickel? This especially rubs me wrong as a BT mouse would be very desirable, if not necessary with how bad the touchpad button(s) is. I always try to turn a negative into a positive, so I ordered a Bluetooth 3.0 USB adapter from Newegg to make up for it. I figure if I'm going to permanently consume one out of three available USB ports, may as well get the latest standard that's currently available for purchase.

No ExpressCard or Firewire.

Unable to purchase without getting Windows. This is twice in 6 months that I've been forced to hand over welfare to the billionaires club in Redmond so that I could get the laptop I wanted. I think it would take an act of congress to get a license refund

Other Thoughts: A few months ago I bought an Asus G51Jx-A1 as my main rig. While it borders on the absurd so far as how powerful it is, it's also rather large - even for a 15" unit. I decided I needed something a bit smaller but didn't want an Atom based netbook. After spending a week with this sweet little notebook, I nearly regret the purchase of the G51J. I could have put the extra $$ from that into a large capacity high speed SSD for this. Throw in an additional 2GB RAM module and a USB powered DVD burner and you have everything you need. Don't let the clock speed of the CPU fool you. Arch Linux runs simply flies on this thing. You may not be quite as impressed with the speed of Windows 7. I certainly was not. Nor was I impressed with how much garbage Asus loaded up in the Win 7 install.

Lastly, it probably wouldn't have hurt any if they had included even a low end Nvidia GPU instead of relying on an Intel integrated chip.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, not perfect

Pros: I chose the 12" Asus UL20 over the 13.3" UL30 or U35 because of price and portability. I have not been let down. This is a great value for the money. The i3-330UM processor is fast enough for me, being that I am not a gamer. While I originally wanted a full powered i3 processor, I was happy with the UM processor when I found out the UL20 has the Turbo33 software that boosts the processor performance 33%, up to about 1.8ghz.

The build feels really solid with nice stiff screen hinges. I have no squeeks from the body or whistles from the hard drive. The metal finish on the top is great and on the silver model remains relatively finger print free.

This thing is actually smaller than I initially thought, but it has a full size chicklet keyboard and a wide screen so I actually forget that it's small. The keyboard and screen are nice and comfortable. I had no trouble typing on the keyboard which is nice and responsive. I also had no trouble finding excellend viewing angles.

Cons: There are some cons, however. My biggest beef, which I have heard others have with most Asus U series models, is the keyboard flex. They keyboard remains a pleasure to type on, but if you watch it when youre typing, there is a small amount of bounce, mostly on the number keys 1-5 and TAB-T keys. It's not a huge annoyance because you really don't feel it when youre typing but it is there. I researched the Asus U series and decided this was something I can live with.

Likewise with the mouse button. I like the idea of a single rocker-style button, but the Asus version is too stiff and hard to push at certain points. It's mostly a moot point because you can use finger gestures on the touch pad to scroll and click 90% of the time.

I would have liked to see the palm rests and the backing to the chicklet keyboard have been aluminum like the back of the screen is because that seems to be where the majority of the keyboard flex comes from.

Other Thoughts: The palm area is not super glossy. While it is plastic, it has a nice pattern on it and has a semi-gloss feel. It's not totally matte, but not what I would consider glossy. Again, the silver shows fewer finger prints.

The track pad has a different texture on it so it's easy to tell where it is. Because of the size of the machine, the touch pad is kind of small, but that is to be expected.

All together I am thrilled with this machine. I was willing to trade an optical drive, fancy graphics and gaming capability for size, prortability and style. The graphics can handle all normal non-gaming tasks including blue-ray playing if you have a usb drive.

Also the 2GB of ram is sufficient, but I am going to upgrade to 4gb. The 2GB DDR-3 ram included only takes up ONE slot, so it's easy to pop another 2GB in the remaining slot.

4 out of 5 eggsHas HDMI

Pros: Great size and form factor, keyboard is easy to type on, screen is beautiful, doesn't get too hot underneath (but it does get hot on the left side, where the air vent is).

Cons: The trackpad buttons are terrible! There is a single piece of plastic that acts as both buttons, depending on where you press it. The problem is, you have to really press the corners of the thing. Anywhere in the middle and you are pressing neither button. There is really a very small area on either side that is actually a button. Why couldn't they have made a bigger button? This is way too thin and small. And it's recessed into the palm rest! You are way more likely to hit the palm rest than the actual button. On a well designed machine, this is just terrible.

Other Thoughts: HDMI is not listed in the specs. I took a gamble on this machine because neither Newegg nor Asus could confirm that this unit has HDMI out. Luckily, the good folks who designed this machine were not as foolish as those who wrote the spec sheet. The laptop DOES come with an HDMI port on the left side, as can be seen in the photos if you click on the picture.
