5 out of 5 eggsCollege Student

Pros: Battery life is amazing, Screen resolution and brightness totally rocks, portability and weight = 5 eggs, The color is pretty sweet, I'm a guy so I was worried about the color because the picture from newegg seemed a bit pink. Don't be deceived by the picture, the color is actually a more darker red in comparison to the newegg picture and has good style with the matte finish. Everyone bangs on Windows 7 Starter honestly I think it's fine Aero is turned off and helps it run faster so big deal if it's not as glamorous. People also bang on the chicklet keyboard well lets compare it the Iphad touch... I can still type a good 70-80 wpm just fine and this is my first netbook!

Cons: 1 GB of Ram is not enough if you add this into your cart don't waste your time not ordering a 2GB stick to slam in this little monster. It only cost $20 bucks don't be so cheap it's worth the extra investment. As everyone else said bloatware up the ying yang but just start uninstalling everything because most of it is pretty much garbage expect your basic windows software.

Other Thoughts: I bought this machine to replace my Compaq CQ60 Windows Ultimate, 4GB RAM, Intel Dual Core 2.1 GHZ I flipped it to my neighbor for $250. I'm a college student so after toting that heavy beast around with a battery life of maybe 45 min you get pretty frustrated. This seems like the perfect solution and so far it is just as fast in my opinion for what I usually do obviously I'm not a gamer. If the touch pad on laptops is frustrating to you as previously mentioned do what I did, buy a mouse and turn off the touch pad.

5 out of 5 eggsvery decent computer

Pros: This is The essential computer. Especially for the students who doesn't want to carry too much weight on their back during school.

also, the pricing is decent since it doesn't go over $400, cus then might as well add $100 and get a real laptop.

I had this computer for just about a year now, and this thing didn't have much problems so far. but I highly recommend anyone buying this to upgrade it to 2GB memory, because when I installed 2GB in it, the performance level tripled!!

This computer also offers enough power to watch netflix movies (although some movies can lag due to the slow refresh rate) but still, for any college student, I think it is a perfect option.

it is also very Quite. I mean very very quite. when you use this you WILL start hearing other peoples' computers and realize how annoying they are. lol.

Plenty of ports, satisfaction :)

Cons: OK, the Biggest Crap you get with this computer is a constant ASUS advertisement that pops up for you screen savor. I had to live with it until I found a website that tells you how to disable it. (you can't disable it the regular way because Windows 7 starter OS doesn't even allow you to)

This computer is NOT meant for gaming. I tried to play Diablo 2, came out in 2000, in this but the processor was too weak to even run it smoothly.

the speakers could be made better. when the sound gets too loud, it starts to click.

Windows 7 Starter... piece of CRAP!!! but if you don't care about customization you'll be fine.

NO CD-Rom. but can't complain..

the camera seems pointless to me since I don't video chat much, but it's alright.

well, I can't tell how good the duel-core benefits me yet still. it feels like it's different, but not that significant. but hey it is duel core.

the screen is bit to small for the internet browser sometimes. but its common to all netbooks.

Other Thoughts: I got this computer last summer for $360 after putting lots of hours on research. and I gotta say, I never regretted buying this computer.

Like I mentioned in the earlier, it is the essential computer. it only has what you need for doing your homework and online access (for students). it's a good thing in a way since you can't even get yourself distracted with it as much.

Memory Upgrade is a MUST!!!
I got a Crucial 2GB DDR3 card for this computer. but if you know any better, get what you think is the best.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst Netbook

Pros: Nice system, dual core, quick for what it is, not much bloatware.
Connected with ethernet cable to install windows updates and it is plenty fast for surfing internet, youtube, etc.
Uninstalled bloatware.
Couldn't be happier, never purchased a netbook before.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: birthday present for daughter

Pros: Small. Keyboard has no flex.

Cons: Max memory is 2GB, and even with that much it's still slow.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little computer

Pros: Light, small, stylish and runs reasonably fast - great for lightweight applications. I plan to use it for note taking, coffee shop surfing, etc when I don't want to lug my big laptop.

Cons: Great gaming machine!!! Not. Whatdda want for $350? Don't whine if it doesn't run Photoshop.

2 GB RAM should be automatic.

Other Thoughts: Get the 2 GB RAM upgrade. Warning - it didn't work until I upgraded the BIOS, I think to 0904 from a 06xx version.

4 out of 5 eggsGood little computer

Pros: Quick little computer. Starts quickly even with all the bloatware. Has everything needed for a small traveling computer. N550 dual core is a great processor for a netbook.

Cons: I hate false advertising and that's what Asus' battery life claims are. I knew this going into my purchase, but I am still disappointed. With all the bloatware installed, the battery gets probably half the stated 10 hours. Without it, it's still maybe six. Windows reports wrong and says it has max of 8:30, but after 20 minutes and 7% loss of power, it's down to 7:30.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my wife who has small hands, so for her, it's a great keyboard. It's a little too confined for my hands.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy Camper

Pros: Nice PC, worked out of the box. I upgraded the memory to 2Gb, system recognized without a BIOS upgrade. Also upgraded to Win 7 Home Prem.
Wifey llikes it, so I'm happy

Cons: Would be nice to have a "track point" type pointing device

Other Thoughts: Asus should include the OS on a disk

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Netbook

Pros: The main thing I love about this is the 6 cell battery (9+ hours) that doesn't look like an overgrown lump sticking out the back of the netbook.

Other Pros:

- Dual Core Atom
- DDR3 Memory
- Bluetooth
- USB 3.0
- ASUS power profiles

Cons: None so far other than the expected bloatware.

Other Thoughts: To the first two reviews (bjr) - there is absolutely no reason to rate a brand-new-on-the-market product down just because it didn't work with an OS that less than 5% of portable devices use. There's obviously going to be driver issues in that situation - it's not the manufacturer's fault or the device's fault.

You're trying to take a mainstream device and do something non-mainstream with it and then complain and say the device is bad when it doesn't work properly.

Do your homework and stop complaining.

Anyway, this is a great netbook so far. I set this device up for a customer so I left only the necessary drivers/applications and got rid of a lot of bloatware. Seems to run just fine. An upgrade to a 2GB stick wouldn't be a bad idea if you do a LOT of web surfing or online games.

HDD is partitioned as follows: 100GB primary, 117GB secondary and ~15GB recovery.

3 out of 5 eggsNew driver fixed WiFI problems

Pros: I'm revising my review because Ralink has released a new Linux driver as of 11/26/2010 that fixes the problem. Unfortunately it's not in the kernel yet, hopefully it will be, but it works. With the new driver I'm seeing 135MBit bandwidth.

Cons: WiFI driver not in kernel. Shutdown hangs in Ubuntu 10.10, works fine in Fedora 14.

Ethernet is only 100Mb.

Other Thoughts: To build the WiFI driver download the 11/26/2010 driver from As root do a make and then a make install, reboot and the card will appear in NetworkManager. I'm using 64 bit Fedora 14.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk WiFI

Pros: It's tiny and upgrading the RAM is easy.

Cons: The WiFI chip is worthless. It comes with a RaLink RT3090 wireless chip which lacks a kernel driver. Fedora 14 doesn't support it at all. Ubuntu 10.10 does recognize it but the connection barely works and the bandwidth is only 1Mbit/second. Shutdown doesn't work on Ununtu 10.10, it hangs and then you have to do a forcibly power off with the switch. It does shutdown with Fedora but that's not much comfort because there is no wireless support in Fedora for RaLink 3090s.

Other Thoughts: I wish Newegg would list the WIFI chips so you would know if they were Linux compatible or not. I booted several ASUS laptops at Best Buy with Fedora Live and they all had Atheros WiFI chips in them which have great drivers. Even though this laptop has the same model number as the ones I looked at it came with the useless RaLink chip instead of the Atheros chip that I was expecting.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for posting your follow-up review to this review regarding the WiFi issues being fixed by a new driver and for the instructions on installing this driver.

Thank you & Best Regards,

ASUS Support Team
