5 out of 5 eggsSuperb!

Pros: Truly the best laptop that I can imagine. Fast, reliable, lightweight, responsive, no crashing, and beautiful! Love the aluminum exterior, HDMI output, speakers, fast wireless card, quick startup and cool on the lap. Great video card, , beautiful screen ratio, internal memory, and Windows 7!!!

Cons: Had an issue with the a/c input terminal being corrupted. Thankfully this computer comes with a 1 year warranty on workmanship. I was able to ship it via FedEx (for free) to California for fixing. It was back at my house 3 days later! PHENOMENAL!!!

Other Thoughts: This computer was the best thing I could ever been given for a father's day present. It has all the features of a dream laptop and more. I love it and hope it never breaks. ASUS quality!

4 out of 5 eggsWonderful, with a couple flaws

Pros: +Was $1k when I bought it
+Sandy Bridge i7 and a 5xxM gpu. Need I say more?
+4 memory slots
+Nvidia Optimus
+It's pretty

Cons: -My screen swiftly developed a patch of pixels that were stuck red. It looks like someone stabbed my laptop, and now it's bleeding.
-If I apply pressure in the wrong place, it sometimes shuts down my wireless card.

Those are the two I took off an egg for. Everything else is a minor complaint.

-Of the 4 memory slots, only 1 is used.
-Doesn't have a second hard drive bay.
-Hard to take apart
-The audio by default is a bit wonky

Other Thoughts: Overall a great choice, with excellent performance for the price. Would definitely buy again, especially since my largest complaint about it (the stab wound) probably wouldn't happen again. A few nit-picks/thoughts:
Optimus makes for great battery life if you're just browsing the internet (I've gotten 3+ hours out of the stock 6-cell,) with actual performance when needed. Sadly, there's little hope of it working properly in Linux, at least for the time being.
The default audio setup is pretty irritating; songs that are supposed to have large spikes in volume lose them too often, and adjusting the volume with in-program controls just makes it get equalized more.
Scumbag ASUS: gives you 4 memory slots, and 4 gb of memory that could be triple channel; installs it all in one slot.
I can't help but feel they could've squeezed another HDD bay in if they'd made it just a teeny bit larger, and that would've been a beautiful thing to have.

5 out of 5 eggsMobile Workstation

Pros: This laptop is easily 2x faster than my previous ASUS i7 620M(2.66GHz). Key differences are 4 vs 2 core i7 and the new Crucial SSD. The new SSD reads at 415MB/s (average… peaks at 500BM/s) and writes at 260MB/s. This means that, for instance, I installed a local copy of Websphere 7 in less than 2 minutes! I didn’t time profile creation but it took much less than than anticipated. Installation and profile creation were so fast that had I though they exited early with an exception. Not the case... laptop was awaiting next task without breaking a sweat.

Also:
- Good keyboard for software dev' and general writing
- reasonable weight (+- 6lb)
- crystal clear screen
- very cool GPU switching utility (can switch per power source and application!)
- reasonable runtime temps'
- good built-in speakers (good enough for Pandora)

Cons: I miss the metal construction of my Asus B53(business) laptop. This new N53 can't balance a glass of scotch on the forward speaker grill as my B53 did (and a key feature this is for air-travel).

Other Thoughts: I built this laptop for web/server development and air-travel:
* Win7-64 Professional, SP1 (Host Operating System)
* Crucial M4 256GB SATA III Solid State Drive (SSD)
* 4 x G.SKILL 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 (16GB total)
* VMWARE: v8
* Guest OS: RHEL 5.5.x (RedHat Enterprise v5.5x)

and:
* Search YouTube for HowTo's in taking back plate off. Screws are hidden by front rubber feet.
* notebookreview published an "Asus Bloatware Guide". I found this useful when picking/choosing which utilities to re-install after upgrade to Win7-pro.
* The included CD has a nice utility for picking/choosing which ASUS utilities to install post OS switch-over (I'm using Win7-64 pro)
* The GPU switching utility is a discrete and subtle. I really couldn't figure it out until I found the 'Power4Gear' and 'nVidia' config utilities. Took a little tweaking until I figured it out - very different from ATI utilities.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: perfect screen size, 1080 resolution, powerful i7 for multitasking (i.e. playing music behind everything else you do), great sound after adjusting settings, web cam protector, good build quality, feels solid, love the brushed aluminum on the cover and palm rests of the keyboard, great cooling unit, never felt a hot spot. Good graphics, not a gamer but it plays everything i need it to. Handy button that switches performance options: 'Quiet Office, Battery Saving, High Performance, Entertainment Mode'. Wireless on-off switch, makes it easier.

Cons: It is a big laptop, check dimensions. Charger brick is big too. Sometimes immediately after loading a new website and beginning typing, keyboard lags. Not sure if it has something to do with the performance setting. Keyboard has some sag to it when pressure is applied, looks like poor quality, but might be something ergonomic behind that. Doesn't bother me. Expect a lot of software updates, bloatware. Updated to windows ultimate, and cant get 'asus virtual camera' to work, worked before the update, and the computer says everything is up to date, have yet to google the problem. No back lighting on keyboard, but ive never owned anything like that so i can live without it. im sure it saved a couple bucks not having it.

Other Thoughts: Owned for a little over 3 weeks now. The sound is probably the best i've heard from a laptop, and cheaper alternative to overpriced Dre Beats sound, just be sure to adjust sound settings accordingly. Movie display and sound is great for personal use, but hook up the HDMI cable to your flatscreen for when you have company over. I am a graduate student in industrial design and use the laptop for CAD software, runs solidworks 2011 without a problem, even on high resolution. Of course i had to get a wireless mouse for that, so no comment on the touchpad, rarely use it. Software loads quick, but I have to choose between the default Integrated Graphics or the High Performance NVIDIA graphics before it loads. Great Laptop for the price, and it looks sexy. Was going to go for the N73, but lack of reviews and lower screen quality changed my mind. Also saved me money, this is all i need and some.

5 out of 5 eggsAsus N53SV-XV1

Pros: Great Screen, Good Webcam with nice security cover, great speaker sound, nice metal finish, VERY fast, Great Battery life (I had it last over three and a half hours), good with games, interactive touchpad is nice, clean and neat layout and design, and a great cooling;no hot spots

Cons: no back light on keyboard

Other Thoughts: I love this computer. For the price, you cannot beat it. I have had it for 4 months and love it. I am in college and it runs auto cad programs great and multitasks great as well. The i7 is a nice touch and the 540m gpu is wonderful. If you want a monster laptop for a great price, this is the one to get. Also the computer runs so cool to touch on top and bottom.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Portable Dev Workstation

Pros: * i7-2630QM, excellent mobile CPU, great for running VMWare VMs.
* Cheaply expandable to 16GB -- came with 1x4GB DDR3 1333 (10600), I bought two 8GB kits of GSkill DDR3-1333(10666) for $50 each on sale, and took the stick that came with the laptop out and added it to another laptop.
* Very readable 1080p screen
* Keyboard is very comfortable to type on, I don't mind the minimal flex that some are complaining about.
* Decent battery-life. Get between 3 and 4 hrs, depending what I'm doing... longer would have been nice, but may be burning more juice due to my upgrades...

Cons: * Huge. As large as some 17" laptops.
* For this physical size, I would have liked a 2nd internal HD bay.
* Headphone jack is a bit loose, but I don't use it much so not going to risk sending the laptop back to mess with it.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for use as a portable development workstation -- it doesn't disappoint.
I upgraded it to 16GB of RAM, and added a 256 GB Samsung SSD (I like the reliability of the Samsung, even though it's only an SATA-II drive (I have the 128GB model in my prior laptop)), and moved the 500GB 7200RPM drive into the optical bay with an adapter from NewModeUS.com.

Running several instances of Visual Studio 2010, SQL Server 2008, on Windows 7 Ultimate x64, with two Windows Server 2008 virtual machines (simulating client environment) and everything is still snappy. With the virtual HD files for the VMs on the SSD, the VMs feel like dedicated hardware.

I don't play games on it, so can't comment on the GT540M video card.

I'm very pleased with this laptop, and have recommended it to many others for this workload -- Glad to see NewEgg got them back in.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall Satisfied

Pros: 1. Nvidia 540 M
2. 1080p Full HD Display
3. 500 GB 7200rpm HDD
4. Nice build.
5. Core i7 - great performance
6. 2MP camers, some people's review said its laggy, but actually its not
7. Better Speaker.

Cons: 1. Kinda Huge for 15.6 inches,
2. Adapter Brick is quite large.
3. Keyboard flexs but its not much of an issue.
4. Viewing angle is low.
5. Display Glare is bad.
6. Kind of heavy, not very portable, if you plan to run places with this laptop.
7. Lots of bloatware. It takes some hours to carefully uninstall those programs.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am quite satisfied with the purchase. But I wish it had the option to select between HD graphics and Nvidia in the BIOS itself. I run ubuntu as a dual boot, and using bumblebee to disable Discrete graphics to save power. Multimedia keys doesn't work with ubuntu.

Also, I experiened electric shocks when in ac power, but later I discovered it was the problem with home earthing. I used it in the college and I didn't experience any shocks.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat System

Pros: Great Specs for a $1000 system. Core i7 and 540M card.

The Display resolution is great; games look good on it and productivity/web stuff benefits nicely from the extra pixels.

Battery Life is about 3-5 hours depending on what you are doing.

Cons: Keyboard is a little awkward but we got used to it quickly.

Typical Asus bloatware/crapware and hard disk partitioning, but both were expected and quickly resolved.

Other Thoughts: This has been a great system a good combination of graphics power and battery life.

I would buy this same system system again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Gaming Laptop!!!

Pros: Screen!!! Beautiful 1080p resolution!

Video Graphics Switch. I love that it switches between the integrated chip and dedicated 1GB card.

Gaming Performance is excellent. Used FRAPS to figure out average score.

Portal 2 (Highest Settings)- 45 Frames Per Second
Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty (Ultra)- 29 Frames Per Second
Assassins Creed Brotherhood- 32 Frames Per Second

Quad Core Processor (I did a AVG scan and it took under 10 minutes to scan nearly 2 million files!!!

Portable. About the average weight but packs a punch.

Cons: The biggest problem I had with the N53SV was the speakers, they were not the best. All I did was disable sound effects. Perfect Now!!!!

And of course, Bloatware but I don't have a windows 7 disc to clean install...bloatware is expected though.....

Other Thoughts: Great PC. A definite buy for the gamer with the need for portability. (College) Very cheap for what you get!!!

5 Stars and Thanks for Great Service Newegg!!!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff!

Pros: Great specs, nice design. Runs L4D2 and Black Ops on high settings with the 540m. Screen quality is awesome, love the 1080p.

I don't have a problem with the keyboard despite what others have complained about. Don't feel the springiness problem and they keys are a good size for my liking.

Cons: Battery isn't great - don't expect more than 4 hours of browsing on battery saving settings. I knew this before hand, but 4 hours is fine for what I need.

As said before, the drive is partitioned into 3 parts, boot, data, and 25gb in a hidden partition supposed to be used for backups. It should be easy to repartition the drive if you don't like it like that.

Loads of bloatware, uninstalled most of it.

Other Thoughts: I'm pretty pleased as this is my first laptop I've owned coming from a 5 year old desktop computer. I'm using it for college in the fall for comp-sci.
