5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop

Pros: Reliable, reasonably fast, awesome screen, good speakers, 4 SODIMM slots for RAM, discrete GPU, decent touchpad, and all for less than $1000. Plus, it doesn't look half bad for something that isn't a Macbook.

I've been using it for about two years now, and I could see myself continuing to do so for another year or two. The Core i7 2670QM is a pretty quick CPU, and the four SODIMM slots made it cheap and easy to fit 16GB of RAM in there. It still runs VMs in VirtualBox and KVM without any problems. Gaming is also not too bad with the GT540, but it's getting long in tooth for that.

Cons: Only one USB 3.0 port, UEFI is kinda buggy, Nvidia Optimus is still a pain on Linux even two years later.

Keyboard is also pretty cramped. It took me a long time to get used to typing on it, and I still frequently make mistakes.

The battery life is also only so-so. Even with disabling the Nvidia GPU and turning the screen brightness all the way down, and even putting the laptop into power-save mode, I'm still barely able to squeeze out four and a half hours of use. And that's just browsing the web.

However, I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and Linux has a history of bad power usage on laptops. I also tend to browse the web with dozens of tabs open at a time (easily 30+).

Other Thoughts: I was able to get OSX running on the laptop with a lot of work, but I can't get WiFi or sound to work (the Nvidia GPU is entirely out of the question thanks to Optimus). However, the touchpad, keyboard, and lan port all work, and that's all I needed for software development.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat laptop.

Pros: Sexy
Comes with drivers and utilities disk
Killer battery life
Ram upgradable to 16 GB
Wireless works awesome
Nice keypad
Fingerprint resistant surfaces

Cons: I honestly can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for my wife for Christmas last year. Yanked the HD out and put an SSD in it. Upgraded the ram to 16GB (I know, overkill).
I had my own Win7x64 home dvd, so I did a clean fresh install (using the key that came with the laptop).
Popped the ASUS utulity cd in and it installed ALL devices and utilites it needed. LEAPS and BOUNDS far superior to the experiences I had trying to do clean installs on an HP laptop.
If you're reading this review and are considering buying an HP laptop. Just forget about it.... Go Asus.
Too bad, but it looks like this model is discontinued. Really too bad, because this is a sweet laptop.
I played SWTOR on it and it played it just fine.
I also play LOTRO on it and it plays that just fine too.

5 out of 5 eggsASUS N53SV

Pros: Good at everything that I make it do, even before I have upgraded my ram and changed the HDD to a SSD.
The preinstall express gate boot is very useful.
The USB 3.0 is also very useful.
GPU computing is nice.
Can be a good desktop replacement.
The best part is it has UEFI boot!

Cons: Cannot completely replace a desktop but it very close
It has a good amount of weight, but it’s not too big of a problem because I’m 19

Other Thoughts: best $1000 spent on a computer

5 out of 5 eggsASUS always impresses

Pros: Great volume for built in speakers, excellent processing power and graphics for a laptop less than 1000 dollars. I can play Skyrim on High settings with 2x AA with 30 or so FPS, Plays Shogun 2 total war very well also. Excellent screen resolution and warranty to boot. I would recommend it, does everything well.

Cons: Graphics card is no powerhouse, but I understood this buying it.

Other Thoughts: If you want a gaming laptop with a slightly less powerful graphics card and save 500 bucks, go for it!
