  • newegg Incredible Beauty ASUS ZENBOOK achieves a unique combination of artistic craftsmanship and advanced technology. The ZENBOOK UX21 uses a precision-crafted design measuring only 3mm at the front and 9mm at the rear and weighs a feather-light 1.1kg. It presents a fetching hairline spun metal finish with concentric circles that embody the tranquility and infinite potential of this Ultrabook. Using durable but elegant aluminum offers a lighter Ultrabook that’s easier to carry, while retaining strength and durability. To accomplish a sleek and smooth metallic look, ASUS developed new mounting methods that reduce screw usage by 12%, taking inspiration from hand-crafted luxury wrist watches. Despite the compact form factor, ASUS ZENBOOK doesn’t skimp on tantalizing graphics, rendering everything from multimedia to productivity in amazing fidelity. High definition visuals look better on the world’s first 450cd/m2 panel on any Ultrabook, making dark areas clearer, while light areas stand out in vivid detail.
  • newegg Impressively Responsive One of the key advantages of the ASUS ZENBOOK is its smartphone-like spontaneity and always-on design. Regardless of how long the Ultrabook remains in standby, it can resume in just two seconds thanks to exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology. In effect, this means users have no reason to shut the ASUS ZENBOOK down, eliminating the need for lengthy boot ups. And with exclusive ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology, the ASUS ZENBOOK can stay in standby for up to two weeks. Instant on functionality automatically backs up data to the SSD should the battery level drop below 5%, removing the risk of data loss due to a drained battery. The ZENBOOK therefore adds worry-free usability to its list of advantages.
  • newegg Incredible Green Dedicated Battery Saving Mode boosts battery charge by as much as 25% for longer usability and range, free from the need to stay close to wall sockets or adapters. So that you’re always in the know when it comes to battery life, the exclusive ASUS PowerWiz utility provides accurate info on available charge by specific usage conditions, so you can plan better.
  • newegg Incredible Performance While compact and light, the ZENBOOK never misses a beat with amazing technology that offers the fastest, most efficient and most breathtaking experience in its class. The 2nd generation Intel Core i7 CPU comes equipped with energy-efficient power that pushes multitasking and multimedia forward to new levels of excitement. ASUS ZENBOOK models ship with SATA 6Gb/s solid state drives rather than older mechanical storage options, making the most of the latest hard drive interface standard with double the bandwidth of SATA 3Gb/s. USB 3.0 also comes standard, upping data speeds by as much as ten times compared to USB 2.0. On average, ASUS ZENBOOK offers seven times faster data connectivity next to competing models, boosting the user experience in every application.
  • newegg Incredible Cooling To accommodate so much powerful technology on a compact form factor, ASUS engineers have developed custom cooling and thermal designs that use a V-shaped air channel to increase air flow, as well as unique beryllium copper alloy components to better handle heat. There are even copper fins to direct heat away out of the case, so ASUS ZENBOOK always stays cool. While thinner and lighter than competing models, ASUS ZENBOOK is also more powerful, and runs at lower temps for increased longevity and reliability.
  • newegg Incredible Audio ASUS ZENBOOK outputs staggeringly rewarding and impactful sound that far exceeds its compact size. In fact, it’s the kind of sound you’d usually associate with standalone surround setups! Based on cooperation between the ASUS Golden Ear team and Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, ASUS ZENBOOK outputs incredible audio that’s the best among all Ultrabook in its class. Custom design includes an oval voice coil for clearer vocals, oversized shielded speaker magnets for more impact and better bass, plus aluminum rings to secure speakers and reduce vibration. This is further helped by ASUS ZENBOOK’s aluminum body, which conducts and insulates sound very well at the same time. Lifelike audio via Smart Dynamic Range Control (DRC) means sheer sound enjoyment in every situation.

2 out of 5 eggsHad to return it

Pros: Very Light, boots up fast

Cons: I returned the product because I found the laptop too unproductive. As an IT Consultant I am on a laptop for most of the day. I tried very hard to change my habits, using the laptop solely for 1 solid week, as I really liked the design but in the end I took it back primarily because of:

1. The keyboard configuration just wasn’t right. It was impossible to constantly type full paragraphs of text without making a mistake.

2. The mouse and track pad kept jumping around, even after I downloaded the latest drivers and modified the settings. I found that on my last laptop the track pad had actual buttons to click so generally I place my thumb on the buttons and use my index finger to navigate the mouse. On this device there is no physical / raised button so every time my thumb would hit the track pad the mouse would jump. Sure this could be resolved by carrying a mouse around, but I visit 4 or 5 clients a day and lugging a mouse around wouldn’t work.

Other Thoughts: All and all I would recommend this laptop for a home user that wants to surf the web, but not for anyone that actually needs to be productive on it. I hope ASUS makes a few changes for the next model as I would try it out again

4 out of 5 eggsInternet

Pros: Very fast
Very thin
Perfect for on the go

Cons: I'm typing this review on this bad boy. However I wouldn't suggest more typing than this on this notebook. It is hard to type (and I go to school for programming) because of the style keyboard. The keys seem to be all over the place.

The wireless seems to be an issue. I'm not sure if it is the wireless card installed but it seems to lose connectivity every 5 minutes. I'm at the airport and it is frustrating to hit "accept" to login to their stupid free wireless. However the wired connection is much better.

Other Thoughts: Very thin, light, and gets everyone to notice you.

5 out of 5 eggsI Love My Zenbook

Pros: It boots up SOOOO fast... I actually prefer my zenbook over my desktop which has a Phenom Quadcore overclocked to 3.8Ghz. The SSD just makes everything so much more zippy and It looks amazing.... With the body being aluminum it feels very solid. Somebody posted about wifi connection problems... I have had no trouble at all connecting to wireless networks.

Cons: The trackpad is kind of annoying but I find ALL notebook trackpads kind of annoying so I won't hold it against Asus... just get a good bluetooth mouse and you're set. I really wish Asus would have released a matching external optical drive with a brushed aluminum body but I won't hold that against Asus either... The LCD is very nice if you are looking straight on but it has limited viewing angles... side to side is ok but up and down is the issue.... I have to open the notebook to just the right angle for optimum viewing... but I can live with that too... it's not like you're going to be viewing it anywhere other than seated right in front of it with the screen being just 11.6". I would have liked a 256GB SSD but I didn't want to wait for it... an option for 8GB of RAM would have been nice too..

Other Thoughts: The Zenbook is definately not a knock off of that thin notebook from the fruit company... similar specs but considering the SSD is faster and Asus thoughtfully includes adapters for wired ethernet connection and DVI monitor.. my old favorite game Pharoah installed without a hitch and runs perfectly with an external optical drive. I haven't tried any modern games but intel has a list of compatible games for the HD3000 GPU if you search for it.

3 out of 5 eggsZenbook UX21E-DH71

Pros: Small, quick. I basically wanted a Windows MBA. And I almost got one

Cons: Trackpad

Other Thoughts: Just wanted to get this review out to say this: This laptop had a lot of potential. So much so that I was willing to overlook some of the bad things that I had heard about it, which I have. Keyboard doesn't bother me at all.

Trackpad, some issues I was also willing to overlook. Glitchiness, whatever. Sometimes slow to respond, whatever. What I can't overlook is when, multiple times, the trackpad refuses to respond COMPLETELY. Restarting the computer brought the trackpad back, but still...

Yes this computer has the form factor, and does perform quite well.. but I think there are simply better options out there. Well to be fair, I wasn't blown away by the laptop but I'd be extremely happy with it if it had a better keyboard, screen, and especially trackpad, as most people have said.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with the touchpad on this laptop. Please install the latest touchpad drivers from Select Windows 7 64-bit from the OS menu then click 'TouchPad' and download the Elantech Touchpad driver version

Best Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsBest thing since sliced bread...

Pros: For those who are not Apple fans (like me), this is a great alternative to the Air. It's size is miniscule, but the screen is still large and clear enough to read easily. The speedy processor and solid state drive make it extremely quick (it installed Office 2010 in about half the time as on my NX90 with the i5 chip.) The instant-on feature is very nice and as a plus it can be disabled. Speakers are clear and quite loud for a notebook of this size. Seems very solidly built. For a super-portable notebook ("ultrabook"), it has some serious chops.
This is my fifth ASUS notebook, and each one is better than the one previous.

Cons: I wish it had a larger SSD and more RAM, but for the limited functions I'll be using this for the current specs should be more than fine.

Other Thoughts: Others have commented about the keyboard - it seems fine to me. I don't have to hit the keys any harder than on my G73JW and not as hard as on my NX90 or my desktop. I think the reason the touchpad may seem "wonky" is that it is so smooth. It might feel better if the surface had some texture. Also, opening the Zenbook is easier if you use the "tab" in the middle of the lid rather than try to open it at the corner. I haven't experienced any wifi issues as yet - I do have a brand-new n-band wireless router, so perhaps others who have had issues are using b or g? Not sure.
This is the machine you can put in your backpack or briefcase and take with you everywhere. And I will!

5 out of 5 eggsSuper Fast, Super Thin, Super Small Size

Pros: The hard drive comes standard with a backup partition so that you can refresh everything to the factory settings if you mess something up or if you want to give it to someone else to use after having used it a little while. It comes standard with a USB wired network adapter and an adapter for VGA miniport; apart from the mini HDMI jack. The USB 3.0 port is great and works well with everything I threw at it; I tried to use my LaCie Fastkey 120GB thumb drive with Clevo laptop and the laptop freaked out; but this ASUS runs fine with it and all of the other things I tried, like USB 3.0 external HDD, etc.. The wireless works great; I actually haven't had any issues but; it seems that the quality may go up and down; I have to use it a bit more to say more about it. Asus factory warranty is a great deal; and accidental damage is covered too I believe for 1 year. Speakers work well and good sound; you can make it quite loud too and the form factor is small. Comes with a cloth to keep it clean

Cons: The lid is a bit challenging to open sometimes since the notebook is so thin. SSD hard drive is a bit small and probablly not upgradeable but it's adequate for most uses; and very fast. Can't think of anything else ATM

Other Thoughts: This notebook PC is great. For me, it didn't really sink in until a day or two after I got it... Heatsink fan blows out the front and up towards the monitor; this is a plus: you can put it on your lap or even slightly sideways or something and it will still be able to cooldown. You can change many things in the BIOS and it is Asus BIOS which is DEFINITELY a plus over other BIOS like H20 etc.. which are really horrible garbage since you can't modify many things there. It's got a fast chip with stepping technology; very nice. Asus is really a good choice of a brand to go with since they are big and do most of their stuff in-house. If you're in the market for a fast, portable PC which can do almost everything, is stylish with a reasonable price, you pay for what you get here. It's a good laptop, quality costs a bit extra, and the small form factor costs a bit extra... But it was a good fit for me. TRIM is already activated at the factory but file indexing isn't disabled. You may want to

3 out of 5 eggsNo OS Software Included...

Pros: The zenbook is a great laptop for the value. It's small, sturdy, lightweight, very quick. I was impressed at how quick it booted up... ~5 seconds from power off. The battery charges quickly and can last more than 5 hours.

Cons: Does not ship with a Windows 7 DVD. The only way to recover or "reformat" your laptop lies in a hidden partition on the SSD. If that goes bad, you're out of luck. Calling Asus customer support, I was advised that I would have to pay them to receive a Windows 7 disk. In reality, you're paying them twice... once already for the license that you now own, and again for the actual disk that doesn't come included. Good luck if you want to reformat it right out of the box and get rid of all that unneeded manufacturer software... you're going to end up paying extra.

Other Thoughts: As with other reviews on here, I've also had wireless connectivity issues. I was advised to download new drivers from the Asus website. As I'm currently awaiting a Windows 7 DVD to reinstall, I've yet to try them.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We no longer include Windows 7 recovery discs with our products. If you need to make backup of the system, please use our bundled AI Recovery software to make recovery discs of the OS.
If you need any assistance with the AI Recovery software, please feel free to contact our 24/7 customer support at 1-888-678-3688 and we will gladly assist you.

Best Regards,

4 out of 5 eggskeyboard and trackpad issues, but not unsurmountable

Pros: Thin, light, and solid: no characteristic frame creak when you pick it up from one side || 1366x768 display || SandForce SATA III SSD: 13 seconds from hard boot to logon screen (posts in 3 seconds), 2-second resume from standby || USB 3.0 || Decent sound for the tiny chassis || Visually appealing || Overall, excellent cost-to-feature ratio.

Cons: In order of decreasing severity: The keyboard needs improvement. The keys are too shallow and may not trigger if not hit at the proper angle. When typing long passages very quickly, this results in letters occasionally missed. This forces me to keep my eyes on the screen when I shouldn't have to. I know I'll adapt my typing style quickly, but right now it's frustrating. || There is something wonky about the touchpad. I can't quite put my finger on what it is (no pun intended), but it results in my mouse cursor occasionally jumping downward. I dare say that the pad might be TOO large, and that it is picking up the palm of the same hand that I'm pointing with, but I hope it's just a configuration issue. || The power plug is as thin as needle (ok, like 3mm) and I am terrified of it breaking. || Battery can not be removed and hence replaced when it eventually wears out. || I would have liked options for Windows 7 Pro and more RAM.

Other Thoughts: Device manager shows the SSD to be an ADATA XM1. CDM gives 450/170 sequential and 27/45 random. ATTO gives up to 550/450 sequential. My drive was 25% full when tested. || Noise levels are not a problem. The fan, when on, may be audible to the operator in a quiet environment (library or bedroom), but is sufficiently broadband not to be intrusive. || Speedfan shows CPU idling around 50C but has spikes as high as 80 under load (I have no idea if this is good/bad for a laptop CPU's these days). || I've had no problems with the wireless, though many have complained about this. I doubt the aluminum body in itself is to blame as many other laptops (MacBook Air), have it. Per a review on the UX31 page, tweaking the power saving features might help. || Many gripe that the keyboard isn't backlit, but the screen is bright enough for finding the right keys (plus the "home row nubs" on the F and J are huge!). If the screen isn't on because the power is off, the power button IS lit.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with the touchpad on this laptop. To fix this issue please install the latest touchpad drivers from Select Windows 7 64-bit from the OS menu then click 'TouchPad' and download the Elantech Touchpad driver version

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Would you mind doing some tests? I would love to see the SSD performance - perhaps just run Atto disk benchmark?

How does the power tip looks like? Is it very thin ? I now Asus prefer them really small, but they're not durable.

How about the fan noise and heat? I know MBA fan (when idle / web browsing) is running all the time at 2000 rpm, but you can't really hear it at all.

Cons: don't know
