2 out of 5 eggsHard drive

Pros: Nice computer. We only used it in front of the TV at night to read. and to play DVDs on.

Cons: Bought it in 11/2012 and in little over a year the hard drive has failed. Now its not under warranty. Very sad.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Like the matted black finish. If you go with a SSD and ram kit. Will improve it a little bit.

Cons: Everything, for the price it's not even worth it. Netflix drops frames freezes, Office freezes. The Wireless NIC, became physically bad after 4 months. I just ended up buying a card online even through it was under warranty. Now this thing sits collecting dust.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat a disappointment

Pros: It was inexpensive. I bought this as a graduation present for my son. It came with Windows 7. That's about all I can say nice about it.

Cons: About a month after buying this lemon my son noticed the web camera didn't work. After spending hours reformatting, factory restoring and messing with drivers, the ASUS tech finally had me RMA the unit. It came back with a functional web camera. Two months later the unit shut down and would not boot at all. This time the ASUS RMA was a bit quicker since no messing around would bring it back to life. They replaced the motherboard and sent it back. The unit is now 6 months out of warranty and will not power on at all again. When you plug the power pack into the laptop the light on the power pack starts to blink, or simply goes out. To add to the mess, I found out from my son that he's never been able to get audio to reliably function on the laptop. I have never experienced so many issues with a single piece of hardware in my life! And I've been working in the IT industry for over 30 years. If this is what ASUS makes, avoid them at all costs!

Other Thoughts: What a bitter disappointment to give my son something that should have served him reliably for years during his college years, only to have it fail miserably so many times. I can't afford to buy him another laptop and spending money on repairing this lemon is certainly not worth it.

1 out of 5 eggsStill Disappointed

Pros: Battery Life

Cons: Mark offered assistance after my first review, I sent it in again and it still has the same issues, crashes, freezes, wont shut down when I actually want it to, the list goes on and on

Other Thoughts: Been over a year now, so disappointed, will have to borrow my son's computer to take my online tests since this one is not dependable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Please try to run System Restore if the unit was working properly before, the system registry is possibly corrupted. To run System Restore, please go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore....then follow the wizard to restore the system to an earlier date and time. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3041453 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

2 out of 5 eggsA little disappointed

Pros: Good price, decent display, good battery life, *decent wifi sensitivitiy, full number pad.

Cons: A little more laggy than I expected. Bought it for my wife, and I was hoping it would run minecraft smoothly for her. It will, if one doesn't go above a 64x64 texture pack, and keeps settings a little low. With more than a few tabs open in firefox, it often goes unresponsive for 5-20 seconds. It seems that multitasking is not this machine's friend. (Please note, I'm not saying she's playing minecraft while browsing.)
The touchpad, which has "palm proof technology" to "prevent accidental input," moves the cursor every time my palm comes near it. In fact, I have developed bad typing habits using this machine, in order to keep my hands away from it.

*Wifi radio is toggled via a function key (would have preferred a physical switch), and has an indicator light. If the machine is powered off, put to sleep, or hibernated with the radio off, it turns back on with the radio ON, but the indicator OFF. So when I turn it on, I must turn the wifi on, and back off.

These next problems may be the fault of ASUS, or of Windows, but they are problems either way. I have set the machine to nothing when the lid is closed, but it goes to sleep anyway.
When one tells it to sleep, it will sleep until it reawakens, which is sometimes quite soon.
When one tells it to hibernate, it will either hibernate, or restart. I find it's best to wait until it's hibernating (power light off) to close the lid, else I may return to find it sitting, lid closed, powered on with the display lit up, or worse, dead from doing so.

Other Thoughts: I would give it more eggs if: I could type correctly on it, without the touchpad randomizing my input; it slept and hibernated consistently; it would let me close the lid; and the wifi radio didn't turn on (without the indicator light) at power up.

2 out of 5 eggsASUS A53U-ES21

Pros: Does a decent job of internet surfing and basic home use. the display is very bright (unless adjusted for battery), the battery has a decent life.

Cons: Overall this is the worst laptop I have ever had. The system crashed multiple times per day (re-installed win 7 - helped for the most part). The touchpad is VERY sensitive and is hard to adjust. the "c" key fell off the keyboard. I have always liked ASUS MBs.

Other Thoughts: This seems to be way below the quality we have come to expect from ASUS, I could have spent the same money and had a decent computer, live and learn.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiecing issues with the notebook. It's definitely not normally for the system to continually crash specially after OS re-install. Please feel free to email me at cl-fred@asus.com so we can further discuss how we can help you resolve the system crash issue as well as the keyboard issue.

1 out of 5 eggsDISAPPOINTED

Pros: battery life, weight

Cons: worst computer ever

Other Thoughts: Sent it in to have the disc player repaired, that works now but it has many more issues now. Shuts down and freezes constantly. Wont open windows, wont shut down on its own, the list goes on and on. Stay away!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Ann,

I apologize for the issues you are having with the computer.

It is unfortunate your computer came back from our repair center with more issues than when you originally sent it. I would be extremely disappointed at this point if I went through the same experience.

If I may, I would like to look at this case further. Please send me your recent RMA number used to my email at cl-mark@asus.com.

Mark

Pros: NONE

Cons: It was the worst computer I have ever own. It was sent in and supposedly repair still does not work properly I build desktops and I use ASUS motherboards they are all been very good. So I thought I get a notebook from them. Big mistake. I have reformat twice after they repaired and it still does not work very good.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Harry,

I am sorry that you are having issues with your computer. If I may, I would like to help. What exactly have been your issues with your computer? Also, what is the device's serial number? Please respond back to my email, and I will further look into this case for you. My email is cl-mark@asus.com.

1 out of 5 eggsBad

Pros: cheap, widescreen, HDMI output.

Cons: slow, blue screens of death, lose left and right trackpad bottons, programs crash often, ajusting sound minimizes most a few programs,

Other Thoughts: I can not believe how slow this machine is. Only thing its good for is basic word processing and basic internet activitys, facebook email etc. I have gotten the blue screen of death many times when returning to it while it was stand by or hibernate. The AMD processor is completely awful; when I first got it I thought it was broken and sent it to them to have it fixed and they "claimed" to have fixed it. (all they did was a basic reformat.) I advise anyone not to buy this particular laptop. I was told asus was one of the top manufacturers when it came to laptops but I certainly do not hope this is their norm, I'm sure this is one of the worst they have. Try to get one with an intel processor NOT AN AMD.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are having BSOD issues. Here is a link below where you can update the bios and all the drivers to see if it will resolve your issues.

Regarding track pad, you may have to send the unit in for service in order for us to repair the track pad.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me again at cl-jeffrey@asus.com which I reside in the U.S

ASUS strives to meet and exceeds our customer expectations within our warranty policy.

Regards,

Jeffrey

4 out of 5 eggsgood laptop for the money

Pros: its fast for the money. Has a lot of features. Use it as a spare and kids computer. Works great to play Netflix and other streaming media.

Cons: does blue screen at times when in sleep mode. Not always but maybe 6 times in about the last year. Maybe some conflict between the drivers and hardware. I'm seeing other reviews say the same thing so I'd say the manufacturer may have some homework to do on this. For what we use the laptop for, its not a big deal for us. Hey, its Windows, and its a Windows PC.

Other Thoughts: I'd recommend it at $350.
