Exclusive thermal technology

Like humans, the harder a computer works, the hotter its internal temperature gets. The problem with pushing a computer to the limits is the amount of heat it generates and how to get rid of it. With the U36, ASUS engineers tackled this problem by developing exclusive thermal technology to keep the system and palm rests cool. Using dual light heat pipes and an efficiently-designed layout, heat is transferred away from the palm rest for a more comfortable user experience.

4 out of 5 eggsWindows 7 Glory

Pros: For a machine maintaining the 13.3" form factor it's rather light weight. Although Asus advertised a 10 hour battery life isn't really going to happen. Real world testing with stock hard drive yields about 4 hours. The Aluminum and magnesium allow body makes the unit feel like it's got a rather strong build and not plastic/flimsy. One thing that's really nice is that it's got 4GB RAM in the form of a single 4GB DIMM. System can be upgradable to 8GB so that immediately expands the updatability of the unit for future upgrades as that comes in handy. Keeping the ultrabook using standard 2.5" sata drives makes it easy for future upgrades due to the cost and availability of 2.5" sata drives.

Occasionally a little light gaming works on this thing too as the NVIDIA Optimus kicks the UMA over to the GPU graphics seemlessly.

Cons: Stock performance with 5400rpm hard drive. Really??? 5400rpm only? Initial boot up was slower than slow. Battery only lasts 4 hours with brightness turned to the lowest.

Most competing ultrabook classed if not using Solid state is on at least 7200rpm hard drive. Touch pad feels strange but it's probably due to the brushed metal surface that may just become an end user opinion and not the product. DC connect input feels a bit flimsy which over time would probably be the first thing to break.

Other Thoughts: When the unit gets upgraded to 8GB RAM and HDD is swapped out with an SSD drive the battery life from initial 4 hour test jumps up to just under 9 hours which is pretty close to Asus's original advertisement video which advertised 10 hours.

As much as I would give this machine a 5 eggs....but I can't. Only 4. It's pretty good but not perfect. If it was perfect, everyone would buy this machine. And if it was perfect then Asus would never learn from mistakes and would never advance. That would be making it worse for Asus than creative criticism.

1 out of 5 eggsI -used- to like ASUS

Pros: Weight, screen size, processor, graphics

Cons: Hard drive, touch pad, ASUS customer support

Other Thoughts: HD started to die about 2 months after ownership. They told me it would be easier for me to remove my hard drive and they would cross ship. 3 WEEKS after they had received my hard drive they finally shipped me a new one. As soon as I reinstall this drive, I'm selling this rag top. Very bummed.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that it took so long for us to send you a hard drive. We were out of stock so we had to wait for shipment from our head quarters overseas.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me at which I reside in the U.S

ASUS strives to meet and exceeds our customer expectations within our warranty policy.
