4 out of 5 eggsSolid choice

Pros: -Solid performance
-Build quality
-Finger print scanner
-Well-spaced keyboard
-Decent price

Cons: -No number pad

Other Thoughts: I've had zero issues with this laptop since I bought it. First thing I did was upgrade the ram to 8gb since I do a lot of photo editing and I wanted it to run as quickly as possible.

1 out of 5 eggsStill frustrated

Pros: Styling, warranty, rugged build, overall very nice package.

Cons: Has been a real problem. Asus warranty service has been very disappointing also.

Other Thoughts: As stated in my earlier review, this computer has been a complete waste of money. I emailed the Asus representative who responded to my earlier review, and got no response whatsoever.

It has now been returned for service twice more since my earlier review.

On the fourth RMA the said they replaced they motherboard, for the second time. And again the computer was completely unstable and unusable within weeks of getting it shipped back to me.

Currently out for service with the fifth RMA, it has already been a month that the computer has been at their service department. They have now just contacted me to inform me that parts for it are non-available, and they therefore cannot give any estimate of when parts might again be available.

I must give this computer, and the warranty service that comes with it, the absolute lowest rating possible.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

My deepest apologies to you for the lack of customer support. It seems like you had to go through quite a lot just to get the computer working. I would be quite frustrated with the process, and I thank you for your patience during all of this. If I may, I would like to help.

Has your computer come back from service yet? Is the laptop currently working? I hope the computer is working the way it is supposed to now. Should you need further assistance, please let me know. My email is cl-mark@asus.com. Have a fantastic day!

Best regards,

Mark

5 out of 5 eggsbest notebook i've ever used

Pros: Pros: This system is very affordable and i upgraded the RAM to 8GB at the time of purchase. RAM was very easy to install and very inexpensive. The notebook is dockable so i purchased a docking bay and use as a gaming system at home. I have had absolutely no problems with this ASUS B43, its got a great processor, good dedicated video card, sufficient sized 7200 rpm hard drive, i mean just look at the specs its all there they are not lying about whats packed into this unit. Anyone who isn't satisfied with this notebook either got a lemon or has been spoiled by having some super computer given to them in the past.

Cons: It wasn't given to me, I had to purchase it.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Business/Student Laptop

Pros: -Compact
-Nice finish, nice look
-Good CPU
-Good for a business and/or student looking for a budget laptop
-Sound works just fine (In response to one of the the previous reviews here)
-No overheating problems (In response to one of the previous replys here, he must have gotten a lemon)

Cons: -Had an issue with the wireless internet. Wired internet worked just fine and other wireless devices in my house worked fine, but this thing just did not want to work when wireless. network connections would say I was connected to my home network, but internet just didn't work. Eventually after a day, it randomly started working and has been working. So I am wondering if the Windows or ASUS updates downloaded a driver or something? I don't know.

Other Thoughts: Besides the wireless issue with the wireless, I've had no complaints. The other reviews here about this laptop kind of scared me, but I haven't experienced anything like they have. Which makes me think they got unlucky and got lemons. I choose ASUS because ASUS does make good products and is a reputable company. I use a ASUS motherboard in my custom $5000.00 desktop computer.

1 out of 5 eggsOverlooked the Asus sound issues on the internet...

Pros: Price point versus performance, styling, battery life (though it accomplishes it by downgrading the GPU to Intel HD)

Cons: Defective internal speakers - works fine with headphones/external speakers. Detects insertion and removal of jack just fine. Just no sound from internal speakers.

Other Thoughts: I was really surprised by how easy it was to contact Asus technical support. Notebook has obvious hardware issue - no software or driver solution. Newegg was very expedient on setting up an RMA. Unfortunately I needed the notebook now, but it will be about 3 weeks till I receive a replacement (East coast, West coast shipping to and from).

Gave it 1 egg simply because of the sound issues I discovered on the internet while trying to fix this notebook - Asus seems to have some serious troubles that are not all driver related. If I had researched better, I would have made a different choice.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you had an issue with the notebook when you first received the unit. If you are still within the return policy with newegg, I suggest you return the unit for another.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me again at cl-jeffrey@asus.com which I reside in the U.S

1 out of 5 eggsFrustrated

Pros: Simple styling.
Matte screen.
Long warranty.
Long Lasting Battery.
Built to last.
Nice keyboard action.
Wifi good.
Touchpad good.

Cons: The biggest waste of money in computers that I have ever spent. And I've bought some lousy stuff in my time.

This machine is primarily for my wife's usage. And her use is quite light, mostly word, excel, and web. She does not game, multitask, or do anything very heavy with it.

My only explanation (and it is only a guess) for what I detail below is that this computer's cooling system is completely inadequate. We have been trying everything to make sure that the machine gets good ventilation and to keep all vents clear and clean. BUT...

Other Thoughts: The machine has been in for service with 3 RMAs so far and likely going in for it's fourth(about 10 months of ownership). All for the same reason: unexplainable lockups, freezes, and reboots. Sometimes, the machine will not boot at all, it will not even get to BIOS, it will not even get through POST. These problems occur randomly. They even occur sometimes with just the computer on but sitting idle. They even occur when the computer is fully cooled and first turned on in the morning.

The first time I called the service hotline and received RMA #1, the tech on the phone determined that is was definitely a hardware problem. The computer was sent across country... and all they did was reload Windows. It failed to POST, the very first time we hit the power button.

Even though I explicitly detailed that I had reloaded the software BEFORE sending it across the country, all they did was reload software and sent it back unrepaired.

Immediately we got RMA #2 and sent it back again. This time the service department replaced the mother board. The computer came back and was fully functional again! and it worked fine!!! YAY!!!!

but only for about 2 months... boo...

The problems have begun again. They are exactly as they were before I sent in the computer with the RMA #1.

So, I called and got RMA #3. The tech on the phone made sure that RMA #3 refrenceed #1&2.

Just prior to sending it back, I reloaded software myself (all five+ hours of it, with updating). The problems continued, it froze up and wouldn't reboot minutes before packing it up. On the RMA checklist, I clearly detailed that I had reloaded the software myself, and it DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE.

Guess what? The service department reloaded software and send it back.

So, I called the service hotline, again. And the answer? RMA #4.

I just hung up...

The constant loss of data from the frequent freezes and shutdowns, coupled with that fact that it sometimes refuses to boot, basically leaves the machine useless while it is in my possession. Not to mention how many hours has been spent reloading software and updating...

So, it is either useless at my house, or it it useless to me while flying back and forth across the county and being "repaired".

I'm somewhat at a loss now. Asus keeps giving me RMAs and keeps paying Federal Express to fly the computer back and forth across the country... mostly to stick a couple of DVDs in the DVD slot, which does nothing for my problem. Sticking DVDs in the drive slot is something even Grandma's are technically capable of. I would do that, if that was all if that was all it needed.

The one time that they opened up the machine and replaced hardware it worked great, if only for a couple of months.

I don't know whether to bother with RMA #4, or just throw the thing in the garbage (with over 2 years of warranty left) and just buy a new one. The warranty is turning out as useless as the machine.

Manufacturer Response:

Can you please provide me with your RMA number and serial number so I can look into your case for you to see what I can do.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Notebook by ASUS

Pros: I was in need for a back up laptop for my work and also for mobilty. I also was not ready to move to a Windows 8 yet. I wasn't happy with the reviews with the notebooks that have Windows 7 Home Premium (lots of bloatware)...and the reviews for W-7 Pro were pretty good (clean installs with very little bloatware). I also did not want to spend too much money at same time get best bang for buck. That led me to this Notebook by ASUS. I was on sale for 28% off list price!! I wanted to get to use the full 8GB of RAM that W-7 Pro would allow, but none came with it..only 4-6GB. So I ordered 8GB (Item #: N82E16820139482) to swap out with the stock 4GB of RAM....TOP NOTCH!! The price of the additional RAM was still way below competing Notebooks. I also got a Item#: N82E16834988080 for space conservation...and fans keep it very cool.

The Notebook booted up with no issues. I took a few hours to completed all the updates and restarts (multi tasking while working). No issues at all. Very fast. Programs load quickly and with the 8GB of RAM a reboot takes 1/3 the time compared to stock 4GB. I don't plan on using this for gaming..but I do dabble with PS CS5 and the video card works very nice for that too! The faster hard drive speed (7200rpm) also is very nice when moving large files and booting up programs.

It comes with several encryption programs (business use) which I have not used yet so I have no review on it...though it seems pretty good.

I will report back once I get to see what this things got and can play around with some of the sofware (when I can find a minute or 2 away from work).

Cons: The 4GB of RAM limits what this computer can do so I recommend bumping up to 8GB (max for this notebook)...especially since RAM is rediculously cheap now a days. Turn OFF the ASUS auto updates and change to NOTIFY you only....it was getting annoying having the computer auto reboot what seems like everyday. This way you can review the updates and if deemed applicable you can download when YOU are ready to...not in the middle of useage and the computer auto-reboots.

Other Thoughts: I have it set up plugged into a keyboard, mouse, and monitor so I have not messed with the pad nor connected to internet wirelessly. Will get back on that.

Over all it is a SOLID notebook and for this discounted price is a very good choice for those looking for a quality price point of 1K'ish for the price of 1/3 less...for this reason I go from a 4egg to 5egg!!
