4 out of 5 eggsGreat little machine, minus the OS

Pros: It's certainly well built, the keyboard feels great despite it's size, and all of the plastic is textured which gives it a much more "expensive feel". Also the new atom processor (Cedar Trail) is fantastic at playing videos. I've been using this as my travel machine, and it handles videos on VLC and the like, surprisingly well. Also has a great array of ports, which I know many netbooks lack, so it's nice to have all those features accessible.

Cons: Obviously there is the standard set of netbook complaints. The screen resolution isn't awesome, the touch pad is a bit miserable to use, and you obviously can't do any heavy processing. But there are a couple flaws that I wish ASUS had thought of before they shipped this out to people.

First there is the issue of the RAM. At 1GB it's not blistering fast obviously. And while I don't expect this to be a real performer, I would like to upgrade that amount to try to boost it some. But you can't, the RAM is soldered to the MB. That's fairly ridiculous, and a bit short sighted on their part.

Windows 7 Starter is pretty terrible as an operating system as well. Throw in the fact that there is lots of bloatware on this machine, and it's just a lose/lose situation. I'm going to test some Linux distros and see if that helps any, but I'm disappointed with the current OS as of right now.

Finally, the battery life is pretty poor too. I've gotten about 3 hours out of that battery on a full charge at any given time. I can maybe squeeze another 30min-1hr or so if I leave everything on super low settings, but that's about it. I'd be more then happy to spend the money on a bigger battery for this unit, but ASUS doesn't make one.

Other Thoughts: Don't get me wrong, I absolutely recommend this Netbook. For the money, you really can't do much better. BUT, there are a few issues you should be aware of when purchasing it, that's why I went into so much detail. For the average user, it'll be great, but if you demand a lot from your machines like me, then you might want to take all the issues into consideration before you buy it. I still use it on a daily basis, and intend to do so for quite some time.

2 out of 5 eggsStill slowwwww

Pros: It is pretty light, for a brick

Cons: See below

Other Thoughts: I'm updating my earlier review, which drew a response from Jeffrey of ASUS Customer Loyalty. As he suggested, I updated the wireless adapter driver and the BIOS. The result was a slightly improved wireless connection, but the computer itself is still unacceptably slow. (I just timed the lag from sleep to loading Firefox: 6 minutes and 47 seconds.)

I wrote to Jeffrey about this and received no response. I also called Asus tech support, and the recommendation was to restore the machine to its original condition. (Just out of curiosity, I tried that, and the result is the same.) Asus refuses to let me return the machine for a refund, although they say I can send it in for repairs.

I'm convinced that this machine has way too little memory to run Windows 7. As Jeffrey told another reviewer, the solution is to install more memory, which voids the warranty. That's ridiculous, of course. Why should I have to void my warranty for a computer I've owned for only one month, just to make it useable?

Shame on Asus for refusing to let me return this thing for a full refund.

1 out of 5 eggsFatally flawed

Pros: With this netbook, you are limited to 1GB of RAM. My friend, who bought this netbook (after seeing my other Asus netbook - which is a delight to own - 1001P), had no idea that the RAM could not be upgraded - and neither did I.
The big problem is this - after you have loaded software and anti-virus, 1GB is simply not enough. The HDD keeps swapping back and forth from the paging file and tasks take for ever. If you could double the memory - this would be a dream computer - it is thin, light, well built and the keys are a joy to use (have a click - rather than a mushy feel to them). It truly baffles me as to why Asus decided that 1GB RAM was the limit for this netbook?

Cons: Fatal flaw - memory limited to 1GB. Effectively makes it a useless device

Other Thoughts: Wake up Asus - This is the very first Asus to get a one star from me - everything else has been 5 stars all the way..

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the specs of this netbook has made you rate it so low. They have design the netbook to look sleek that's why you are unable to get to the memory.

However, if your unit is out of warranty you can open the unit and add that extra 1GB to fulfill your needs. Just be forwarned that this will void your warranty if the warranty label has been torned.

2 out of 5 eggsSlowwwww

Pros: Small and light; decent battery life; price

Cons: Wireless adapter is terrible; it drops the wireless connection repeatedly, making it almost useless for my purposes. (This is not a network / router issue; my old Eee worked perfectly.) Also, the processor can take several minutes to come on fully, even using the ironically named "Instant On" feature, which also won't let you fine-tune your power preferences.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the wireless was dropping. Here is a link below where you can update the drivers and bios to prevent the wireless from dropping.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Decent for the size and price.

Cons: Incredibly difficult to repair, flimsy hinges that break easily, numerous issues with connection to both the mouse and keyboard over time.

Other Thoughts: If you ever want to take one of these apart (for any reason) expect to take awhile at it. Tight plastic "snaps" hold it in place, but they break rather easily (even if you're being careful. Once the keyboard/mouse is off the board, be weary of the connections because they are easy to accidentally pull out.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you were having a hard time taking the unit apart. If your unit was still under warranty you could have sent the unit in for service to have us repair it.

If your unit is out of warranty I believe you can go on youtube and their are actual instructions on how to take apart this unit.

2 out of 5 eggsWow

Pros: Lap top runs alright for the price all I wanted it for was to use the internet and it works for that.

Cons: The laptop came great no problems except the keyboard it the @ button types a ' the - button types a ' a lot of keys type ' when they're suppose to type something else.

Other Thoughts: No other thoughts

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the keyboard is malfunctioning. Have you tried updating the laptop. Here is a link below to support your netbook.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, Price, ASUS makes good stuff.

Cons: Can't upgrade memory above 1GB.

Other Thoughts: For those not happy with memory I suggest ReadyBoost as a compromise. No, its not like adding actual memory but its Windows 7 Starter...get real here. You can't use anything more than 3GB anyway and with the speed of the peripherals ReadyBoost did help. I wouldn't suggest ReadyBoost for other machines though...just netbooks.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent netbook if you don't mind never upgrading it

Pros: Extremely inexpensive.

Very thin and light.

Matte LCD with matte white bezel around LCD.

Appears to be quite sturdily built.

Cons: Upgrade issues: fixed 1GB memory (unacceptable), unreasonably difficult HDD access (borderline unacceptable), non-standard height 7mm drive (becoming more common with newer drives / SSDs)

The keyboard usability is a bit lacking, especially when comparing the X101CH side by side with the 1001P. The feel of the key-presses does not inspire confidence while typing at a brisk pace, whereas the 1001P is relativity decent for a netbook/laptop.

Other Thoughts: If this had simple access panels on the bottom for the memory and HDD, this would be the single best computing value out there. After adding a modern SDD and a 2GB stick to my eeePC 1001P, it is an amazingly capable every day computer. Hooked to a full-sized mouse, keyboard, and monitor, and it is entirely possible to forget you're using a netbook.

The eeePC X101CH, however, will never be more than a very limited machine. This is a true shame considering the amazingly compact form factor, build quality, and fanless design. This is the reason for the 4 star rating.

My eeePC X101CH was purchased (and is now operating) as a file/print server. I wanted something fanless that could run 24/7 without breaking the bank. It also has the positive of having a built in keyboard, monitor, and touchpad...quite unlike the Atom-based nettops that (ridiculously) usually run for a bit more. It fulfills this role admirably, but wouldn't recommend it for much else.

5 out of 5 eggsCheck HDU Content

Pros: Beautiful design, perfect functionality and powerful for such a tiny machine.

Cons: Be aware there may be hidden data on the hard drive. China is suspected of loading keyloggers, etc to detect your activities or gain credit card data. Mine had 95 meg of hidden data -- I just reformatted and loaded a clean OS.

Other Thoughts: As with any "pre-loaded" software there is a lot of silly "bloat-ware" including the less then useful "Express-Gate" functions.
