3 out of 5 eggsNow with upgraded RAM

Pros: small and cheap

Cons: touch pad takes some getting used to -- not there yet. with 1GB of RAM a very limited machine

Other Thoughts: I just upgraded to 2GB of RAM for very little money, and it makes a world of difference -- this now seems to be a nice little machine as long as you're not trying to do too much. Just browsing and some limited office work.

BUT, the fact that one has to void their warranty in order to get this functional is absurd. Moreover, you have to take the whole top keyboard/touchpad off, take out the hard drive and the motherboard and processor just to access the RAM. Again, a little absurd.

I don't want to be too hard on a $300 machine. I wasn't expecting the world. But it does seem like some odd decisions were made by ASUS on this machine.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you do not like the design of the netbook. The have created this type of case to make the look more smoother without any RAM door below. Some newer models do have the RAM soldered onto the motherboard.

Regarding about voiding the warranty that is just our warranty policy. So if anything broke while you had the unit opened we are not held responsible. Also if you removed the voided warranty sticker and it's still intact then I believe your warranty will still be valid.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me at cl-jeffrey@asus.com

2 out of 5 eggsWish I hadn't bought it

Pros: Small, light.

Cons: Lack of RAM

Other Thoughts: I bought this netbook not expecting much. All I needed to to was check my gmail and occasionally a small spreadsheet. I have next to no files on it, and have installed nothing other than a browser. It is laggy and generally a pain to work on, and simple browsing is frustrating. I occasionally stream video on it now, since I own it, I mine as well do something with it, yet I only do so if I'm feeling VERY patient about how long it will take and if I don't mind if the thing freezes up for a few seconds every few minutes.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you do not like the design of the netbook. You can open the unit to upgrade the RAM up to 2GB however that will void your warranty if you tear the warranty sticker.

The reason why they do not have a memory door is to make the netbook looke clean.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me at cl-jeffrey@asus.com

4 out of 5 eggsIt Does Everything I Bought It To Do

Pros: Lightweight, not bulky, and great to carry with you when you don't need a laptop. It "fills in the blanks" so to speak and does some things you can't do on an iPad. It's great to take with you on short trips, flights, or on cruises.

Cons: The first unit arrived with a power button that wouldn't turn on, but things like that happen with electronics. You get a rare lemon. The unit was replaced and the second unit works perfectly. I'm sure anyone could nitpick something about this unit or the box it came in if they really tried, but it does everything I bought it for so I have no complaints.

Other Thoughts: Overall, it does what a Netbook should do...surf the internet, check email, create and print documents. If you want more than that, buy a laptop.

2 out of 5 eggsAdequate

Pros: This netbook is adequate for streaming netflix and checking email. For the price, I don't expect much more than that.

Cons: However... the screen colors are pretty awful - the blacks are very grey, and everything looks washed out. The same video on my older model 1005HA Eee netbook looks much richer. I spent a while playing around with the settings, and I didn't manage to get this one looking anywhere near as nice as the 1005. Also, it's worth noting that in a side by side comparison, this model took longer to boot up than the 1005 (with XP), even with most of the bloatware uninstalled. Simple things like opening explorer windows were slower too.

Other Thoughts: I was hoping this netbook would be a nice replacement for the 1005HA (which I'm replacing because it won't charge anymore), but it seems significantly inferior.

Manufacturer Response:

class=ExternalClassAEDFF61B1A27459D94D032F1E941301F>Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that this unit does not fit your needs that you may have to just get something that does satisfy you.

Regarding your other unit the 1005 is it over the 1 year since you purchase the unit? If not you can send the unit in for repair. Also if it's over the warranty you can at least have them replace the power pin as that might be the problem. I believe the price is around 75.00 just to look at it and doesn't include the parts to replace.

Just another option to give you. If you do want to send the unit in for service you can email me at cl-jeffrey@asus.com with C1042-2541 in the subject line.

Jeffrey

4 out of 5 eggsgreat!

Pros: This PC is really nice! This is the second one I purchased of this line. I like the fact that they are light, long battery life, and have a have a relatively good amount of power.

Cons: -- one egg: It does have a good amount of bloatware. When uninstalling the bloatware, the "fcn" key was enabled. This caused some of the keys to show up as numbers instead of the letters when pressed. I re installed it and it fixed its self. I then uninstalled it again and it didn't happen again....

Other Thoughts: all in all a good netbook but why the bloatware?

5 out of 5 eggsLightweight Netbook

Pros: Lightweight, sturdy case, non-glare screen, long battery life (~6-7 hours with Linux - see Other thoughts below), not a fingerprint magnet

Cons: Only has 1 gig of RAM...

Other Thoughts: Just purchased this locally in Atlanta (sorry, Newegg).... I stripped off Winderrss 7 Starter and put on Lubuntu 12.04... and everything works, except the screen resolution wasn't set right... so I substituted in the newer 3.4 kernel and Voila! - screen resolution is now correct at 1024x600. Also, running Lubuntu 12.04, the machine idles at under 100 MB ram usage, and with Chromium or Firefox running 5-6 open tabs, it is still under 400 MB ram utilization....

4 out of 5 eggsCool netbook but.....

Pros: i use this mostly for setting up networks and jobs that don't require a lot of computer power. but i still would like to be able to upgrade the memory on this netbook. Me and my buddy bought the same netbook off here and he was able to upgrade the memory. he had to completely dissassemble the netbook to get to the memory on the bottom of the motherboard. Asus for some reason got rid of the easy access door on the bottom of the netbook. Asus and Newegg are no help when you ask them how to upgrade the memory. If the answer is not on the pre written paper in front of them then they wont know what to do. of course i read after i ordered that i can only exchange this netbook and not get a refund. but whatever its Asus....Quality!!!

PS...it doesn't feel cheap and it looks great, but would be better with more memory.

Cons: there has to be an easier way to upgrade the ram then having to disassembles the entire netbook. thats why i give this 4 eggs instead of 5.

1 out of 5 eggsUnusable with only 1GB of un-upgradable RAM

Pros: Had this on PRE-order just camping every day until this came in stock. FINALLY the New CPU's, more efficient, longer battery life. The Finish around the screen is sessy, they should have done this on the whole computer. Boots up quick AFTER you've removed all the crapware.

Cons: I've been a tech for almost 20 years. YOU CAN'T UPGRADE THE RAM. AYFKM Asus? There is NO slot that you can pop open and upgrade the RAM like ALLLL the videos @ CES showed. So you open up 1 tab in Chrome, AFTER you've spend 8 hours removing all the CRAPWARE Asus loads up with this, (Dude, the FORCE you to install the BING Bar when you install windows) and you're done, maxed out RAM and it starts putting everything on the Hard Drive VS RAM which the speed difference is about 100:1 Ram:HDD, so it's totally choked up. When you can get 2 or 4 GB of RAM for $10-$20, Full RETAIL this is INEXCUSABLE ASUS. You could have double the RAM and made it usable for probably $3 your cost. And what did it save you $0.08 not putting in a port? Nice Bait and swap there. Reminds of me the old packard bell days when they soilders in cards and ram so you can't upgrade. But there isn't anything you can spend more and upgrade to, so what the.... Asus?

Other Thoughts: It looks like the lower version 1015 DOES have a battery port, but has short battery life (3 cell battery vs 6). It literally took 8 hours to remove all the unnecessary windows components, all the bloatware, and al the INSANE amounts of ASUS bloatware. After I removed almost every single bit of it, tweaked the heck out of this thing, updated all the drivers, firmware, etc, I can do a cold boot with about ~615-650MB of the ram used. That beats about ~950 (95%) otherwise. DUDE 95% of the usable ram in bloatware? You can't even open a browser or heck, even solitaire. ;) Would you like to double that ram for <$10, sur... oh wait, no you can't. DO NOT BUY THIS Until Asus fixes this ASININE design flaw. Can't wait for their canned 'Manufacturer's Response' " We are sorry that you are having this issue, please contact our support team... blah blah blah".

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for the comments. We appreciate the feedback so in the future when they design another version they will add that memory slot. Sorry for the design flaw you have encountered. Unfortunately this model was meant to be a base model with no upgrade availability. If you have any other questions or concerns feel free to contact me at cl-jeffrey@asus.com. Please reply with reference# C1042-635. Asus strives to meet and exceeds our customer expectations within our warranty policy.
