1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY ASUS

Pros: Graphics card is nice

Cons: Faulty hardware, terrible RMA support, customer support insults you, repair crew attempts to access personal accounts through your RMA'd unit.

DO NOT PURCHASE ASUS PRODUCTS

Other Thoughts: Do NOT buy asus. I fear my personal information is compromised and they have had my unit for 28 days. I'm lucky newegg took the time to accept my return/exchange request, but I fear I may not get it to them in time because asus staff refuses to assist.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the hardware was not working properly. Good to hear that newegg was able to work something out with you to get the unit exchanged.

If you have any questions or comments you can email me at cl-jeffrey@asus.com

5 out of 5 eggsGreat high performance laptop. Runs Linux Well

Pros: The first thing I did with this laptop was create all the necessary Window backup disks. The second thing I did was install Ubuntu Linux. Everything worked right out of the gate. I am able to play a variety of Humble Bundle games with no Issues. Particularly, I can play Torchlight on all the highest graphics settings.

The Laptop is quiet and cool. It isn't as heavy as it sounds like it would be either.

Cons: No real cons here.

Other Thoughts: All of the connection ports are on the side of the laptop, which means that any USB cables will be sticking out to the left and right. Not a huge issue if you are docking it on your desk and using an external keyboard and mouse, but might be an issue if you use the mouse directly to the right of the laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst impressions are great

Pros: I'll probably touch on some things others have covered, not to repeat them, but because it's worth mentioning it every time. The build quality feels great. Nothing flexes, has "give", or creaks.

-The palmrest is a very comfortable rubberized plastic. Feels great when typing.
-The keyboard itself is also exceptional. I can't think of any way to improve it; it feels very sturdy, the keys themselves are satisfyingly "tight", and give a satisfying but not loud click. I find it's worth mentioning that the W, F, and J keys all have raised points to orient your hands, and the W key is a welcome one for gamers.
-The screen is very good, does not seem to have the same dark "glow" most traditional LCDs have when displaying a dark color. Darks look dark, colors are satisfyingly, realistically saturated. Looks great, and the matte finish is very welcome.
-Cooling is excellent. I was able to hear my buddy's old Macbook fans spinning away literally 20 feet away (it was a quiet room) and I wasn't able to hear the fans spinning in my own lap. The laptop itself is kept impressively cooled, only reaching a slight warmth, maybe no more than around 90 or 100 degrees F in somewhat heavy usage(Games:Killing Floor, Borderlands 2, nigh-maxed out). Leaving the laptop sitting on a bed, it doesn't heat up very much at all, unlike other laptops that seem to draw in air exclusively from their bottom (and of course heat up when placed on a lap/padded surface), this machine retains its airflow and does not seem alarmingly warm at any time
-Ports: They all feel very solid. The USB ports seem "tight", but they may loosen up to a comfortable looseness with time. Putting in my wireless mouse dongle was more of an effort than I was used to, and I checked to make sure there wasn't any harm being done when I pushed it in. Maybe this is new of most systems but I found it worth note.
-The specs speak for themselves, but they really are great. Very satisfying to load up Task Manager > Performance and see 8 charts under the Processor (i7 has 4 cores, x2 w/ hyperthreading) and a solid 8GB of RAM.
-Bluetooth pairing with a 2011 model Android phone worked without a flaw. Very quick, and the interface itself is not reskinned in any way, it is the very functional Windows 7 default.
-Directional arrow keys are full, not half-sized like many other laptops.
-The text written onto the keys themselves are satisfying

Cons: These are very minor things, but I feel they should be mentioned - this is exhaustive and you should be hesitant to expect anything worse than this:

-The "function" keys (adjusting volume, screen brightness, keyboard brightness with the 'fn' key in conjuction with F1-F12) seem to be slightly glitchy, or I don't fully understand them. They don't always work in-game, and the keyboard brightness adjustment itself seems inconsistent or not understandable - it takes a seemingly random number of combo presses for it to recognize what I'm doing and start recognizing the key presses & adjusting it appropriately. This may be a software issue, I have yet to seriously explore it.
-Perhaps similar to the function key software: the "power modes" software interfaces to a small extent with default W7 norms, but there is a dedicated switching button next to the power button. As with the function keys, it seems to trip up and think I pressed something else sometimes, eg. pressing it after having adjusted my screen brightness will first flash the current brightness again before changing power modes.
-The power button itself is not like traditional laptop power buttons. The first time I wanted to manually full-shutdown the computer, by holding the power button, it would only go to sleep, no matter how long I held it. This hopefully won't be an issue because I've yet to experience any hard/software issues deserving of a cold shutdown.
-Mousepad gestures are somewhat difficult to understand.
There's some convenient, new ones like 3-finger swipe down to desktop, but scrolling, like on a web page, seems only compatible with 2-finger swipes, and even those are awkward (or maybe I just don't know exactly how to do it, but it's not like you'd initially expect to do it, by any means). This was something I investigated on my machine and I wasn't able to find any settings to change it to the usual 1-finger-on-the-right scroll method.
-It came with a fair amount of bloatware. Nothing particularly awful or unexpected - most notably: Lots of various debatably-bloatware ASUS media software (music, webcam, video, power management, audio interfacing, data backup - all separate programs), as well as McAfee, and Bing Bar, which I literally couldn't start the computer up for the first time without agreeing to install it. Kind of obnoxious, but nothing overly infuriating. Nothing a quick runthrough of the uninstall screen didn't satisfy.
-The screen is almost too bright. When I'm writing NewEgg reviews at 5am, it's far brighter than anything in the room and certainly kills my nightvision, even on the lowest setting. Its brightest setting is quite bright.

Other Thoughts: I think my pro/con list was fairly thorough.

I think you really get what you're paying for: A fair amount of RAM, an impressively big and good resolution (1920x1080) screen, a upper-mid class video card, solid build quality, and nothing outstandingly bad about any of it. It all works pretty much like I'd hope it to and I don't regret putting this much money into it. I wouldn't be surprised if this laptop serves me for 6 or 8 or even more years. It's great hardware today and I think it's built well enough that I'll still have it around for quite some time.

If you have any standards or discrimination when it comes to purchasing a laptop, this will certainly impress you. It's visually appealing and follows it up well in the actual performance department.

Well worth the money in my opinion. I love it so far.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: Great specifications and matte screen, runs silently, and great design.

Cons: The graphics processor is defective, and have sent it back to Newegg for an RMA to no avail. They ran their benchmarks and told me that it was running under "normal" conditions, and that the problem was on my end - that incompatible software or a virus would cause this. The same laptop was returned to me (after 2 weeks of waiting), and once I got it back, the graphics processor still runs hot and throttles itself to lower speeds when on load. The resultant gaming experience is PITIFUL and unenjoyable.

Other Thoughts: I have searched the internet for other people experiencing what I am. There appears to be a select amount of individuals who have high temperatures and low performance from their GTX 660M, whether the laptop be ASUS, Lenovo, or otherwise.

This really is the luck of the draw. You might have a 5 egg experience, or you might end up with a defective product like me, which can consume a lot of your time.

I can still perform normal operations such as word processing, web browsing, etc., but the purpose of spending as much money as I did was for some portable gaming machine, which I did not receive.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent computer

Pros: First Asus product. Solid build, runs fast, low noise

Cons: When using Apple ear-buds the audio would randomly switch to the speakers instead. Doesn't happen with usb headset.

Other Thoughts: Package shipped by UPS ground and showed up rather banged up. The Asus box inside wasn't damaged nor was the laptop.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat machine, but pray it doesn't have problems.

Pros: I loved this computer. It's super cool looking, in my opinion--some may call it clunky, but I think the giant fans make it look delightfully intimidating. It was comfortable to use, the display was beautiful, and it consumed Diablo3 on maximum settings without the slightest hiccup, and only got slightly warm after hours of gameplay.

Cons: I've owned it for two months and only used it for less than one.

Two weeks after I bought it, there was a problem with the fan--a screeching noise that was clearly a factory defect. Sent it in, got it fixed.

Two weeks later, a problem with the touchpad where it either wasn't registering my touch or was sensing something that I wasn't doing. Also had to be a factory defect--I treated this thing like a newborn baby the whole time I had it. Sent it back.

It's been gone for almost three weeks--the repair center is waiting on a part and they have no idea when it'll come in. They have absolutely no policies by which they will replace my computer or send me a refund--I have to wait indefinitely.

Other Thoughts: Fantastic computer, if nothing goes wrong--but if anything does go wrong, you will regret buying an ASUS. When I say they have the worst customer service ever, I'm not just talking about long waits on the phone, I'm talking about how they have my computer and I literally may never get it back.

I'm currently talking to a lawyer about the possibility of filing suit and I've already filed a complaint with the attorney general's office. In the meantime, I have no other option but to purchase a new computer and simply eat the loss of the money that I paid for this computer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the turn around time to get your unit is taking longer than expected.

Can you please give me your RMA number so I can look into your case to see what part it's waiting for and how long until the repair center will receive this part from headquarters.

5 out of 5 eggsClean, Smooth, Great, heavy

Pros: Very cool and quiet when not gaming.
The rubber texture of the laptop feels nice.
The matte screen with 1080p is also great.
Performance-wise (3610 and 660m with 8GB) is pure greatness.

Cons: touch pad slightly gets in the way of typing, especially when you're lying down.
The weight of the computer itself plus the power supply makes it difficult to carry.
Speakers do not produce great quality.
Battery life is unimpressive.
The HDD that comes with has poor performance.* (see other thoughts)
The HDD activity, power, wifi, numlock, etc. lights are inconveniently located on the front side below the touchpad. this is difficult to see plus the lights are unremarkable, so there might be some trouble indicating any of those lights.

Other Thoughts: It is slightly bigger than I expected from a 15 inch laptop. (thank goodness I didn't go 17)
This does NOT have a second SATA port like the G75.
*Switched out the HDD with an SSD and it runs fast.
Maybe more USB ports? I don't need more than 4 but maybe someone does.
Keyboard lighting only comes with one color.

5 out of 5 eggsTasty!

Pros: this laptop is hands down the best way to spend a few hundred on a great gaming laptop. the cpu/gpu cooling design is perfect. I always worry about the gpu overheating in gaming laptops, but this one never seems to get too hot even sitting on my lap during game play! hdd and extra ram bays are readily accessible. res is crisp, and keyboard is firm.

Cons: replacing the ssllloooowwwww 500gb seagate hdd is a must.

Other Thoughts: I reccomend an ssd of 256 or more,(samsung 830) it makes all the difference in the world. Pick up an extra set of x2 4gb ram sticks, definately worth it as well. barely fits in a 17" messenger bag. do your home work if you are not familiar with mid to high end gaming laptops before you buy, at this price with these specs 5 eggs is a given... or youre doing it wrong...

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The components in this notebook should in theory provide excellent performance. The screen looks great and although there is some bloatware it is easy to uninstall, some of it is actually useful, and none of it takes up more than a very small amount of resources. The ergonomics are great, and it is easy to type on. I also like the look and the sturdy feel of the notebook. The USB 3.0 ports are great!

Cons: However, it would have been nice to have used this notebook for longer than a few hours. After the first round of Windows updates, the notebook went into a reboot loop, then automatically loaded the recovery mode but the recovery mode quickly ended with a giant red "ERROR" across the screen. Also, the notebook started having a click/screech sound coming from the hard drive area each time I booted it up. I've read many other reviews of this notebook mentioning that the hard drive is very unreliable and I have to chime in. Having a failure like this is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE and no matter how good a notebook is, having it unusable (especially so soon after first boot) eliminates all other positives it might have as it essentially is an expensive paperweight.

Other Thoughts: I am currently waiting on an RMA, and have been on the phone 45 minutes to get it. The hold time to get to an operator was low but I have been on hold while the operator has been setting up the RMA for over 20 minutes and counting. The fact that I paid what I paid for a notebook and now have to send it back shows me that ASUS is no longer a company of reliable quality. I hope that their customer service can solve this issue rapidly but I believe that I should at least get a hard drive upgrade to a different make/model or an extended warranty.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the hard drive started failing on you. How long have you had the unit for. If you are still under the return policy with newegg the best thing to do is call them and see if they can send you a replacement.

If you are past the return policy then you will have to send the unit in for service.
