1 out of 5 eggsFailure prone

Pros: Looks good
Light

Cons: Critical HW/SW flaw required factory repair less than 60 days after first operations. A big hassle.
Now, six months out of warranty, laptop ceased charging the battery. ASUS asked for $500 to replace motherboard.
$500 will instead be applied to another non-ASUS laptop

Other Thoughts: This laptop is no longer available.
But I would/could not recommended purchasing an ASUS computer

2 out of 5 eggsLemon finally expired

Pros: When it worked, it worked well enough for my purposes.

Cons: Frequent application crashes (browser, skype, file explorer, all at the same time). Either a bad driver or shoverware, but could never identify the cause after uninstalling and disabling junk.

And now two and a half years after owning it, it died. Abruptly shut off, won't start again, a spark visible through the vent and a burning smell..., none of these are positive signs. I'll likely go with another manufacturer next time.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice for the price

Pros: This is my first notebook and compared to the laptop I lug around for work (a dell) it's feather weight! I've had it for a few months now, bought it for school, and its very easy to get used to. No number pad on the side but that doesn't bother me - accounting types might not like that. Goes to sleep in a second, wakes up the same. Battery life around 4-5 hours for normal use, around 3 for gaming. Gets a little bit warm if you play games, but not overly so, does not affect the computer. Overall, I'm happy with this computer and would buy more if they were still available. Oh and very minimal bloatware that had to be removed. Nice bright screen, easy adjustments.

Cons: I guess the sound could be a "little" bit richer but with headphones on watching movies its very good. Probably just something I haven't learned to adjust yet.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat PC, Touchy mouse pad

Pros: processor, hd, screen and weight

Cons: touch pad from HELL. ASUS techsupport is pathetic and disorganized.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for providing a positive review to the laptop. I apologize that you are having issue using the touchpad. Since the touchpad supports smart gesture, please make sure your finger is touching the correct location to have the touchpad response accordingly. If further assistance is needed, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3104371 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Regards,

Rodel

3 out of 5 eggsFast and Powerful,...but...

Pros: The laptop is compact, but powerful. Excellent battery life..and with the usage of a Solid State Hard-Drive (SSD) - it boots within 13 seconds where it is ready to launch the internet.

Cons: The only major flaw (in my opinion only) is the TouchPad. Horrible design & implementation.

The right & left mouse clicks are part of the entire touchpad and you must keep your fingers/palms high off the keyboard - in order to avoid accidentally touching it -which can screw up you typing an email or something along that nature.

My wife has asked me to disable the touchpad and now forced to use a regular mouse - which defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

If you can get beyond the touchpad issue and comfortable with using it (which my wife cannot do and I sometimes still have the problem myself - then the laptop is powerful enough to do almost anything.

Other Thoughts: I feel really bad giving this a 3 star rating. The touchpad issue is a big-deal for my family and now I'm forced to find out if I can resolve it by disabling it and installing a 3rdParty software, or worse yet... have to purchase another one that is more user friendly.

If this touchpad wasn't an issue, my overall rating would have been a 5-star easily!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat PC, Touchy mouse pad

Pros: Great PC. Excellent features. Very light and fast. The mouse pad is sometimes schizophrenic. I have recommended to others and still am.

Cons: Mouse Pad

5 out of 5 eggsAsus U47VC

Pros: Fast, slim, quiet, easy to use (except for touchpad). Not much bloat ware compared to others I've owned. Worked right out of box. Doesn't run hot, much cooler than other laptops I used.

Cons: Touch pad quirky. Almost useless. I almost returned the unit because I had to use the touch pad to get setup and it was very frustrating. I know about the fix from reading Asus response in reviews but haven't had time to install it.

Other Thoughts: I wanted laptop with Win 7 and separate video card. Hard to find. My daughter has similar model for three years, home schooling kids and loves it. I needed it immediately for my business, other unit crashed. Backup from crashed unit went smoothly. I just connected my external monitor, keyboard and mouse and got back to work quickly.
Asus should not be sending these units out with such a quirky touchpad. I assume they have stopped production of these units. To bad, because other than that one issue I like the unit. Understand I use it more as desktop CPU so can't comment how it works as a standalone laptop. I only use it that way on business trips.

3 out of 5 eggsNice But Failed

Pros: Slim design, lightweight, excellent features, plenty of ports, optical disc burner, seemed to be fast.

Cons: Track pad too sensitive, when typing the track pad is a real problem, pointer is always moving, only way around this seems to be disabling it. The lid too flexible (bendy). The aluminium is only a thin sheet for appearance, not for case stability.

My main problem with this was out of the box, during setup for first use, the computer drops power, I had to start again and was forced to do a restore, then the computer drops power again during the restore.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

In regards to the touch pad, try installing both the ATKACPI driver (hotkey-related utilities) and the ASUS Smart Gesture touchpad driver along with any other drivers your computer needs. As you may already know, you can download these drivers by visiting the ASUS support page.

Once you have the latest Smart Gesture program installed, open it up and go into the Settings. Disable any of the advanced swiping gestures the program has activated and just keep the basic ones that you want to use. After adjusting the settings, you will find that the touchpad will be a lot more stable and less frustrating to use.

As far as the laptop power issue, has it continued since this review?

Please respond back to my email at cl-mark@asus.com, and I will try my best to help.

Regards,

Mark

3 out of 5 eggsbig highs, low lows: disappointed

Pros: Clean look
Chiclet keyboard
LED lit keyboard
Above average graphics cards
Dual graphics card (Intel HD 4000 / Nvidia GeForce GT 620m)
Plenty of hard drive space (750 gb)
8gb RAM
Decent battery life

Cons: Monitor dims during regular use unless plugged to wall
Immense amount of bloatware (typical of any new laptop)
Speakers have horrible sound quality (severely low quality compared to rest of high quality components)
Does not automatically detect mouse even if plugged in (does not automatically disable smart pad)
Smart pad can be under and overly sensitive (difficult to get used to)
Customized settings to display/battery life do not seem to save, and must modify them every log on

Other Thoughts: This laptop has a lot of really good qualities that would make most, if not all consumers happy. However, there are many small and annoying inadequacies that this laptop has that should not be present in a laptop of this caliber. It seems that some of most simple hardware luxuries that all, even the cheaper, lower, quality laptops have, are lacking in this machine.

Overall, I am dissatisfied with this laptop, it serves it purpose, yes. It does everything I need it to do, but with an asterisk. I always feel like it is a matter of some before some hardware or software malfunctions. I would not buy this laptop again, nor recommended it to anyone. It has too many simple problems that have simple solutions and with this price, those should have been addressed. If sound software and hardware cost money, I should have just dropped extra money or got a cheaper laptop and expected it to happen.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The monitor dimming issue can be fixed in your laptop's power management settings, and you should be able to turn off the LCD dimming mode there.

Both the Touchpad’s responsiveness and Touchpad-mouse detection issue can be fixed by updating the computer's drivers. Specifically, you would need to download and install the ATKACPI driver (hotkey-related utilities) and the ASUS Smart Gesture Touchpad Driver. Once the Smart Gesture program is installed, make sure that the mouse detection feature is turned on.

Should you need further assistance, please let me know at cl-mark@asus.com.

Best regards,

Mark

2 out of 5 eggsGood hardware ruined by bloatware

Pros: Good hardware for what you're paying. Computer has the potential to run smoothly and well.

Cons: Pervasive bloatware. Removing it all is a challenge. When I pulled it out of the box and turned it on it said it was missing Asus drivers (nice popup notification every time I try do anything), but I can't find a good place to download them online.

Other Thoughts: Normally I build my own computers so I don't have to deal with this type of junk, but I can't do that with a laptop. I just don't get why I can't buy a computer, pull it out of the box, turn it on, and use it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

You can download the drivers directly from us here:

http://support.asus.com/ServiceHome.aspx?SLanguage=en

Just type in your model and you can manually download and install any drivers that are missing. You can also remove the unwanted programs if you do not use them. There are some important ones that I would definitely keep, though. If you have any more questions, or issues, please feel free to e-mail me at cl-tien@asus.com. I’ll be happy to help.

Best Regards,

Tien
