3 out of 5 eggsGreat While It Lasted

Pros: Worked as advertised / designed.
Easy to use UI

Cons: Battery died. Not worth the time or $$ to replace :-(

Manufacturer Response:

Dear David,

I apologize if the battery stop working or it no longer charge. ASUS provides warranty coverage for the product. If it is still covered under warranty, the battery will be replaced free. If the warranty already expired, you can replaced it at your own risk. The battery should be available online from third-party vendors. If you need further technical assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150650479 on the subject line.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent tablet

Pros: Great screen size and resolution, color depth is excellent. Good response/speed in standard mode, good battery life in power-saving mode. Decent improvement in response/speed in "turbo" mode, but not overwhelmingly so. Videos play well. Average number of OEM-included apps.

Cons: After a year of ownership, I've had the unit back in for servicing three times for the same problem and is now facing a fourth repair... There are two latch points on this unit where the (optional) dock connects to the tablet. Inside the latch space, there is a small metal tab that the dock's latches clip around. On my unit, under light usage (connect and disconnect less than 4 times a week), the latch has broken off.

Other Thoughts: Granted, this part of my review probably belongs under the dock instead of under the tablet. Still, I feel it is important to tell prospective buyers of these problems here before they commit money to buying a tablet that they may also want to use a dock with. I have more experience with ASUS's RMA process than anyone should have, and I'm not terribly happy with their repair process, speed, or effectiveness of this problem...especially since the problem recurs so often under such light use of the dock.

I've seen other connector designs like the one ASUS chose for the TF700. Some allow the use of the latch release to help reduce the pressure required to connect the two components. This one does not... The latch release is inoperative until the unit is docked, *after* the latch point has already been stressed. Also, if you root your device and need your device serviced - for just about any reason - be prepared to pay to replace the motherboard. ASUS technicians operate under the noble but occasionally ineffective guidance that no unit sent in by a customer can be returned to the customer in anything less than "out-of-the-box" condition. This includes the OS, even when the problem is purely hardware. When my unit went in on the third repair, I had rooted it and installed a new OS (because ASUS isn't really doing much to release new Android OSes on this product). Even though the problem was STRICTLY hardware - the broken latch point - ASUS felt that it was necessary to replace my motherboard, because once rooted, they will not return it rooted. The pricetag for the motherboard was in excess of $170 alone - plus about $70 for the latch...totaling over 50% of the unit's replacement cost.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. The Keyboard Dock does come with a locking switch, please make sure you slide this switch all the way to the left in order to avoid breaking the metal clip, accidentally. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# N150314331 on the subject line.

2 out of 5 eggsStat Pleasing Device Mediocre Performance

Pros: The Tablet has decent processor power, graphics and display.

Cons: Constant freezing, rebooting, lack of system memory, touch interface can become an issue with the double tapping always zooming in.

Atrociously bad audio...
The internal speakers have no volume at all. Even with volume boosting apps it is difficult to here. When I have a headset on, that is the only time I can truly utilize anything may require sound.

If I had seen the forums with so many other owners of the product I would have looked elsewhere.

2 years after purchase I will have no problems giving this to one of my kids.

3 out of 5 eggsRepair is unforgiving and expensive

Pros: Great screen resolution and competitively priced at the time.

Cons: alleged quirkyness with freezing, and shut downs

Other Thoughts: I bought THREE of these in 2012 along with keyboards, two for my two adult daughters and one for me. I never really got to use mine as it finally stopped working. First the connection with the keyboard started getting flaky then the tablet wouldn't turn on at all. Tries lots of help through tech support, but no help, they recommended sending it in. Though it was hardly used, they wouldn't give any free repair. This is the problem, they're systematic on repairs.

They gave me an RMA in Oct, I sent it in, and didn't hear from them for weeks, and four weeks later it arrived in the mail alleging they tried to contact me by email and phone, and not response so sent it back. Called tech support, and they said I was contacted by phone and email, and I verified they had the right email and phone. Never got any response. Why would I ignore? Was told the estimate was $55. I asked if I could just pay the $55 and send the tablet back in. No, they had to issue a new RMA, and a new estimate had to be issued. Told me to track the package and call if I didn't get estimate within 3-5 days after it was received.

Got an estimate yesterday. Said it would be $184 to replace the motherboard - most expensive repair I was told. Now I'm trying to decide if it's worth paying $184, and only a "90 day warranty" . . or go buy a new one on line for $199 with a one year warranty, or buy a refurbished one for similar cost. Can't evaluate if the table is "worth" the $184 because I didn't get much change to use it, before it failed. Am I throwing $184 after something that's going to fail again? Reading the reviews concerns me about another repair and the quirkyness of the wireless and GPS. Dilemma.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks where it works, "but",

Pros: The screen is bright, beautiful and crisp. 1920x1200 packed into a 10" diagonal lets you read like it were a book, and max brightness is able to make black-on-white legible in direct sunlight.

The camera works quite well, provided you don't expect DSLR results. With the docking keyboard, the SD and USB-host are a nice plus as are the added several hours of battery. Integrated GPS is wonderful and can tell you what side of the street you're on. Micro-hdmi out is nice, but see below.

Processor power is more than adequate for most apps, but browsing in firefox or chrome is quite often irritating at best. However this may be due to wifi problems.

Audio out is beautiful; White noise is barely audible with over-ear phones, and it handles symphonies and pounding EDM with aplomb.

Cons: I'd rather wish that the HDMI output were a little smarter. This screen is 1200px tall, all TVs and most other panels are 1080... a little control over the letterboxing, please?

The only con serious enough to really complain about though is the wifi. The data rates, intelligence of the controller, and signal reception are just... pitiful.

I have rarely seen this tablet get a data rate north of 15Mbps (bits, not bytes), even when signal is excellent. More often, I get maybe 5Mbps. Hello, year 2000!

On campus, I have observed it to become hopelessly confused by the campus-wide wireless, constantly D/Cing and moving to new APs without ever getting access to any of them.

On wifi access meters, I observe it to often choose _worse_, lower-signal APs when better ones are available. If there aren't better ones, well, when everyone else's phone and laptop has a mediocre but working signal, I'm doing the wifi equivalent of "can you hear me now?"

If I'd bought this from a bargain bin, well, c'est la vie and caveat emptor... For what was (when I bought it) supposed to be one of the flagship Android tablets, I expected better.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing! Except for the Speakers

Pros: Fast, dependable, beautiful resolution, runs Netflix better than my blue ray player,

Cons: Speakers are extremely weak, however, using external speakers or headphones the sound is spectacular!!!

Other Thoughts: I bought my TF700T when it was first introduced in 2012. I have been absolutely in love with it from day one. And now, even more so because I discovered it works great as a teleprompter (with add-on app from Play Store). It even runs Netflix during primetime with no pauses or glitches. (Netflix subscribers will know exactly what I mean).

The additional keyboard completes the package, and blue tooth mouse is a must if you want to use as a teleprompter.

With killer looks, and a stunning display, which by the way also looks awesome through a big screen TV (hdmi connected), you will not find a better tablet anywhere.

I did not subtract a star for the speakers because it sounds so good using externals. I believe the people at ASUS must have decided they would have to double the price if they added killer speakers, had that been the case I never would have bought it.

1 out of 5 eggsUnbelievable degradation in performance

Pros: specs, aesthetics, initial performance, battery life, display

Cons: updates stopped at about 12 months on market, performance has deteriorated over time to the degree its now just a relatively high quality E-reader. Close to useless otherwise...the lag time from input to display has to be seen to be believed - can be upto 30 seconds for a simple key stroke!

Other Thoughts: Hard to believe Asus walked away from this. Don't want to hear about upgrading to CR or other means of getting Kitkat...its widely known that the memory is very low quality. Asus should be all over fixing this.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for liking the specification, aesthetics, performance, battery life and display on the tablet. I apologize if you started experiencing slow system performance and stability related issue with the tablet. Please try to do a hardware reset to resolve the stability issue and install the most current system update. Also, please verify that third-party applications being installed have the most current update and are fully-Android compliant to avoid conflict that may cause stability problem. 2 out of 5 eggsBattery/Durability below par

Pros: Great specs for it's time

Cons: In less than one year the glass has started to separate on the front. Initially battery life on stock firmware was dismal.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this tablet a little over a year ago because of the nice slim form factor and Tegra 3 processor. Within the first week I noticed that the claimed battery life was nowhere near reality. I would have to charge the device every night whether I used it that day or not. After a couple months had passed I decided to void the warranty and unlock/root it and install a custom ROM. After installing CM11 the battery life went up to what I was expecting and it has worked well ever since. It can go a few days with light use without needing a charge.

As for the durability. I initially liked this device because of it's sleek iPad like looks, and it does have a good feel in the hand, but about 6 months in I noticed a bit of separation of the glass screen from the body. Now, with careful treatment it has not separated much more, but is still continuing to develop a slight gap along the top edge near the power button. I need to point out I use this device VERY lightly. With that sort of wear in such a short amount of time given my very light and careful use I would wonder how it would fair under more normal/rigorous circumstances.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Will R,

Thank you for the positive comment. I apologize if you started seeing some issues with the screen developing a gap near the power button. Should you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and write down service# 3786810 on the subject line.

1 out of 5 eggsDecent product, horrible customer service

Pros: Sound product, decent OS, good graphical display - the reason I bought it was the display size, and I am not disappointed in its performance. Memory is good and a SD slot makes storage of videos and large data files very easy.

Cons: Not much negative to say about the unit. See "Other thoughts" below, though, for the frustration ASUS caused me on two occasions for the same problem.

Other Thoughts: 3k characters isn't enough to share how frustrated ASUS makes me. As long as the product works, you're fine...but do NOT EVER have a problem requiring service on your tablet (outside warranty, that is)!

For me, the tab that holds the dock in place broke off within a month. I returned the unit for service, and the service was AWFUL. I exchanged more than 5 chat sessions and 7 emails trying to get repair status. When I finally got a reply, it was essentially to tell me, "You broke it and you'll have to pay for the repair, and by the way, pay us in 4 days or we return they unit unrepaired." The clock started when they sent me the message (at like 1AM), and a day later when I got the message, I had lost a day... And since it was a weekend, my questions about how they arrived at their repair decision wouldn't even be read until near the end of the "pay-or-else" period they gave me. During some hastily initiated chat sessions, the "techs" I chatted with essentially wanted me to accept that they couldn't help and the the unit would be held until they finished talking to me. I was "graciously" (after my strong complaints and two "escalations") given a 2-day extension...but they never answered my questions about how it broke on first use.

They though they claimed it was fixed when they returned it, it broke immediately again the first time I re-docked it. Maybe it was fixed, maybe it wasn't. Foolishly, I didn't look REALLY CLOSELY to verify it. Equally foolish, I didn't return it right away for re-repair. I just "dealt with it" for the next 8 months or so, until I got fed up again. Did I get better treatment the second time? No.

Treatment this time was worse because during the 8 months between repair efforts, I unlocked the unit in order to install some custom ROMs. ASUS's *internal* policy is to only return units in factory-like condition, and there is NO room for any other repair approach. So, despite the fact that my motherboard is perfectly functional, their "procedure" requires them to flash it before returning it, without even TRYING to see if it boots... But they must have gotten it to SOME state, since they knew it was unlocked. So, not only did I get the never-ending parade of ill-informed and borderline rude chat "techs", three "extensions", and a phone call to their "service" line, my tablet was more or less held hostage to a repair policy that does not serve my needs or wants.

What a waste of my money to replace a functioning part AND a waste of materials on their part...hardly friendly to the environment. And the entire time, every conversation with ASUS revolved around their policy rather than whether the tablet boots or not.

The solution for ASUS is as simple as this... For out-of-warranty repairs, allow customers to repair what THEY want, and if the requested/authorized repairs are inadequate in ASUS's opinion, have the customer acknowledge the potential of getting back a non-working unit. Simple as that.

Manufacturer Response:
