1 out of 5 eggsDead after 13 months.

Pros: Fast

Cons: Unreliable

Other Thoughts: This laptop completely died after 13 months of light use, will not power on at all. Just out of warranty period, so it's trash. Waste of money.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry you are having issues with the laptop. Even though your laptop is outside of the warranty, we do offer an out of warranty repair service. There is a fee for this, however, but it is still an option.

If you are interested in, please let me know through email, and I can set everything up. My email is cl-mark@asus.com.

Mark

1 out of 5 eggsterrible!

Pros: not sure, I'm too distracted by the cons

Cons: The screen resolution is awful, and the touchpad is junk

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you do not like the screen resolution of this notebook. If you are still under the return policy I suggest returning this unit and get one with a HD 1080p resolution.

Regarding about the touchpad, Here is a link below where you can resolve the touchpad issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGet it! ASUS A55A-NB51 Notebook

Pros: Quick wakeup, fast, Ivy Bridge 3rd-gen quad core i5, Intel HD 4000 graphics, (2) USB 3.0 & (1) USB 2, minimal bloatware, great warranty & workmanship. WiFi & touchpad work great, sound is good. Great battery life.

I Spend lots of time shopping & comparing when I buy stuff on the net. Thankfully this time it didn't take much time to decide that this was the best deal, and has a few hard to find features. That was 4 months ago and I am not one bit disappointed.

Multitouch touchpad is nice... larger than most, about the size of my android phone's screen, and I like pinch zooming from there better than a touchscreen with fingerprints. I've had no probs with the touchpad as others have said here, and there is a link on one of them for a fix.

From what I've heard about Win8, I'm glad this has Win7, and I've chosen not to use my free upgrade to Win8.

Cons: It supports Bluetooth 4 but doesn't seem to have it onboard. No biggie, dongles are small and cheap.

Other Thoughts: Be careful when comparing... ASUS makes other models that look the same and seem to have the same specs (Intel Core i5, 6GB Memory, 750GB HDD), until you look closer...

This CPU is 3rd Gen core i5 (Ivy Bridge), and also has Intel HD Graphics 4000, aluminum palmrest & USB 3.

Never could find all these on one ASUS machine, at this price. Some will have 2nd Gen (Sandy Bridge, do a search) CPUs and most will have standard graphics and all-plastic cases.

3 out of 5 eggsPoor quality

Pros: Fast.

Cons: Windows Explorer crashed after updates. System did not boot after restore. Mouse pad is terrible.

Other Thoughts: It is hard to see this being a new laptop. I bought an asus laptop before. Didn't experience this lack of quality control. Will return for a hopefully better working unit.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you had a problem right from the start. I hope you returned the unit and got one that is working properly.

If you still have the unit you can try doing a factory restore. Make sure you same everything because all will be erased. Restart the computer and press F9.

If you are still having problems with the IE you can try updating the VGA drivers on our website.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful machine; touchpad DOA

Pros: The machine feels very sturdy. It's very sleek and nice to look at. So far it runs cool, and everything loads and responds pretty quickly.

Cons: Touchpad was DOA.

Other Thoughts: I ordered the laptop on new years day and paid extra for the 2 day shipping so I would have it for a trip I'm taking on Monday. It arrived earlier than the tracking suggested so I was pumped! Imagine my dismay when I discovered the touchpad was dead. Following the instructions on ASUS support site, I made sure it was enabled, updated the drivers, and checked the BIOS to make sure it was enabled there with no improvement. The weird thing is the touchpad doesn't even show up on the list of devices connected to the machine. A phone call to ASUS tech support later, I have to ship my laptop to them, at my expense, and wait 10-14 business days to get it back. So much for my trip.. Awesome. I won't take an egg off for this problem because I don't blame the computer; it really does seem like an excellent machine, once everything works.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor screen

Pros: Looks good, and good weight

Cons: Touchpad is a bit sensitive and started to act up a bit with the cursor going all over the place without touching it.

Screen is weaker than other laptop screens I've seen. Not sure why but fonts don't come out crisp. This will drive you crazy if you use it every day.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the screen resolution is not HD. If you are having problems with the touchpad, here is a link below that will solve your issue.

If after you have done the updates here is the last thing you can try before sending it in for service. Make sure you back up everything as everything will be erased. Restart your computer and press F9.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderfully outstanding laptop

Pros: I've only had this laptop for a few days and already I am in love with it. It is so smooth, it runs fast despite having a 5400 RPM drive.
The processor with the turbo boost will actively underclock and overclock itself depending on the needs of the various applications running in background or sight that you are using.

For a laptop of this size, it's odd to find the speakers of it are mounted on the bottom but it seems to sound better that way where they are slightly muffled against a flat even surface, where it will direct the sound out and more towards you instead of being on top where it can go in every direction and sound too full of treble. The speakers themselves are great though even if they are little. They do have good kick to them.

Other features is the USB 3.0 ports. It has 2 of these and 1 USB 2.0 port. The USB 3.0 ports on this machine are noticeably faster as advertised. I had plugged in my external hard drive which is way back in the days of a USB 2.0 connector and I was receiving 40-50 mb transfer all the way through.

The laptop track pad is big and has a lot of features. It's an 'Elan Smart Pad' which I've never heard of before but I'm not much for laptops.
The features of the smart pad are so useful, you may not even need to buy a corded mouse for the laptop. It's multi touch up to three fingers and can be used to zoom in on things, zoom out, change active windows, scroll through pages, change pages on internet browsers and windows explorer, rotate, and the usual commands like click, click drag, highlight, and all the good things.

The battery charges fairly fast as well but again I can't provide too much details because I'm new to owning a laptop.

The laptop comes with 6 GB of 'PC3 12800" DDR3 1600 which most likely can be upgraded to 8 GB. I'm going to take the gamble and say it supports 8 GB.

It comes with a host of useful programs depending on your views. Asus Vibe Fun Center which is a game place, Asus Live Update for updating the Asus programs and other things, a couple pre-installed gadets such as one for changing power settings on the go and Instant On. Instant On is very useful and does what the name implies. Of course it doesn't work when the laptop is powered down. It's for when you close the lid when the machine is running.

Other programs it comes with are:
Asus Splendid Utility,
Asus WebStorage,
Asus FaceLogon,
and not to mention, Asus Instant Connect. If you are in an area where you don't have internet but have service for your android phone, you can connect instantly to the internet through your android phone. That can prove useful.

The Intel HD 4000 can do 2D games very good if ever you are bored somewhere and want to play a small game.

Cons: McAfee Internet Security.

That is the only con I have for this laptop. It comes with that. That was the first, and so far only program to go.

BE CAREFUL HOW YOU UNINSTALL THIS.

If you don't like McAfee Internet Security and don't care to just delete it, DO NOT DO THAT.
My past experience was that I did this once and then I ran the uninstaller because something came up as not being able to be deleted. I had to run the uninstaller but then there was apparently a file that was needed to complete the uninstall. ???? Why isn't as simple as delete and therefore be rid of? I do not know. The end result, I had to reinstall Windows (this was an older computer bought from a store) that came with the computer to get all of the extras and McAfee back just to uninstall it properly.

Other Thoughts: I enjoy playing a lot of high power games on my desktop PC which is built for gaming, so having this laptop which can hardly do games is a bit of a downer in a sense.

I bought it in the sense that I won't need to play games for it, nor do I want to, but I can't help but feel that it is lacking a sticker that says it has a Nvidia GT 540m or GT 640m in it, but I knew what I was buying before I bought it so I have no right to complain about it. Still, though. But I saved about two hundred dollars not buying one with a graphics card.

The Elan Smart Pad mouse track pad takes a little bit of time to get used to. I didn't like it at first but now I quite like it and I might not even have to buy a mouse as I've said earlier.

I would recommend this laptop to anyone who isn't looking for a gaming laptop. You get quite a bit for $630 dollars at the time I bought this laptop.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat looking Laptop

Pros: Slim, light, fast, USB 3, bright screen no dead pixel, rated 5.7 on windows experience.

Cons: Its not really a con but it comes with a hdd, should come with a ssd.

Other Thoughts: You cant go wrong with Asus, they make some of the best motherboard on the market so the laptop should last forever.

5 out of 5 eggsFor us Linux users

Pros: Took me a few try's to nail down installing Linux to this new uefi bios based system. So here it is made easy. First disable uefi in bios, hit esc at bios post . Disable in the boot section, then delete the windows boot loaded option. Now load to live and delete all partitions. Re format to mbr bios format and create partition table. Now install and that's it. The default format on the drive won't fly with grub.

Cons: Tad bit of light bleeding from corners of the screen

Other Thoughts: It came with a stuck green pixel. Massaging the area freed it and alls well.

She's fast and cool running.
