3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: one of the few pc's that still come with windows 7, very light

Cons: not very powerfull

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for sharing your review. We value all of our customers' feedback and this is no exception. I am sorry that you are not happy with the laptop's performace. The F75VD laptop was designed for muitimeda use including internet browsing, watching video, and looking at pictures. It can do some muititasking; however, it was not designed to handle demanding tasks such as high end gaming, advance editing etc. If your computer is performing slow doing the basic muitimeda tasks, there might be something wrong with the computer.

Should you have any questions, concerns, or comments regarding your laptop, please let me know. My email is cl-mark@asus.com

Regards,

Mark

4 out of 5 eggsNice Laptop

Pros: 1. Has it's own GPU
2. Large screen
3. Fairly decent battery life, depending on usage
4. Pretty good processor
5. Great GNU/Linux support, currently dualbooting Debian and Windows 7 on it.

Cons: 1. Only 3 USB ports (though one of them is USB 3.0)
2. Touchpad could be better, but I use a USB mouse.
3. Has 4gb of RAM soldered to the motherboard

Other Thoughts: I upgraded the RAM to 8gb and threw a 1TB HDD in there and was ready to go. Get about 45fps in Skyrim on High settings (not max) and 60fps in WoW.

Great native support for linux distros.

Was really surprised that it had the RAM soldered to the board, but in the long run I can always do 4+x

4 out of 5 eggsThe best of the ugly ducklings

Pros: Great specs for the price
Fast processor
Windows 7 and not Windows 8
Doesn't heat up at all

Cons: Ugly Ugly Ugly
The keyboard is cheap and should be larger for this size of laptop
The integrated touchpad buttons

Other Thoughts: This is a great reliable computer and works great after removing all of the Asus bloat. The speakers are loud and the LCD is clear. MY only gripe is that it is just plain ugly. It looked much better in the photos. The base is a little larger than some others as well. Also, please, for the love of me, stop integrating the touchpad buttons into the touchpad. They work much better as seperate buttons.

3 out of 5 eggsnice laptop, poor support

Pros: big screen, runs games ok

Cons: internet explorer constantly crashes, I called support and they told me to update IE, it does that on it's own

Other Thoughts: google has better support

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you are having an issue with IE. Did you update to the latest IE browser. Here is a link below where you can update the latest bios and drivers to see if that will help resolve your IE issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Cost is good for light to mid-level graphics for gaming. Nice big screen and fairly light as far as a 17-incher goes. Gets the job done.

Cons: Touch pad is touchy as all heck if you don't adjust the settings, you'll need a single jack or USB headset, screen can be a little dark outside of games.

Other Thoughts: I got this rig so I could just generally surf the internet and play some games (Generally Steam games and minecraft), but I didn't have the budget/need for a high-spec game laptop or the space for a desktop and so far I'm satisfied with what I have. I can run several programs without noticeable lag or any trouble at all. Also this ASUS is pretty lean in terms of bloatware (Compared to a lot of other manufacturers) so cleaning that up wasn't too bad at all.

It wasn't really a con for me but something to note is the choice of having only a single headset jack is a little weird, so if you've got one of those expensive gaming headsets, this is something to consider. Personally I just use a USB headset and call it a day.

Cons for me are, the touchpad is really really sensitive and can be finicky. I've had accidental gestures happen, from zooming in when I didn't want to or shifting pages before I'm done reading. I've tinkered with it enough in the settings that I can live with it and I'll use it if I need to, but I just end up using my mouse most of the time.

The other con for me is that the screen just seems a little dark/cool/off to me outside of games. Right now I'm just sort of tinkering with the calibrations until I can get to the right brightness/contrast/color cast to my satisfaction. Then again, I'm picky about this sort of thing so your mileage may vary.

Anyway, I'll probably update this again after the first month or two but so far so good!

5 out of 5 eggsAsus

Pros: Screen is wide with a decent resolution.
Solid feel.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: When I open up the My Computer folder, it shows two hard drives, one 200gb which has the os on it, and one 350gb. Im thinking if there are really two HDs, Im going to replace one with a SSD and the other with a bigger HD. This would be an amazing feature to add on to what this laptop already has.

4 out of 5 eggsOut of Box Experience a Little Off...

Pros: Machine is billed on NewEgg as having an NVIDIA Video card, which is true, but it also appears to have an additional INTEL Video card as well. The NVIDIA, according to what I have seen from the Control Panel, seems to be a kind of slave card doing all the heavy lifting for the INTEL Video. I wasn't expecting more than one video card, as neither the information I found on NewEgg or Asus mentioned it.

I purchased this Laptop for my step-son, and so far he is thrilled with it. It was able to run MechWarrior Online without any problems.

Cons: The out of box experience was not up to what I thought it should have been. Once my wife unpacked the box and turned it on, it immediately went into recovery mode, and had to recover the hard drive from the recovery partition. On first boot it was missing multiple drivers which required me to hit Asus's site to get the software.

However, after the initial hitches, the machine has worked fine so far we are very pleased with it.

Other Thoughts: Had the machine for a little over a day. So far pretty happy.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh.

Pros: Discreet Nvidia GPU. Large screen. Solid enclosure. Asus warranty. Windows 7 instead of 8!

Cons: An ungodly amount of sleezeware and "utilities" which no one wants. Only one DIMM slot. No mSATA which I believe is intentionally removed. A slow, low end 5400 Toshiba hard drive to complement the incredible amounts of sheer crapware so loading times are even more abysmal than they would be already,

Other Thoughts: There was so much crapware on this thing that I think it set a new record for just how low vendors are willing to go to make a few bucks. As the hours went by - one by one - tediously uninstalling garbage that no one asked for when they thought they were getting a laptop with "Windows 7" - not "Windows 7 and every piece of shareware software known to mankind" - I could feel the anger inside of me wreck the whole experience of getting this thing for my wife. In the end, because some of the Asus utilities they ship the thing integrated with (garbage like Cloud Backup and sidebar gadgets which are designed to do nothing more than take up half your screen just to show you the CPU speed, etc.) I just downloaded an OEM version of Windows 7 which was designed for Asus and reinstalled from scratch. I decided to purchase an SSD to replace the extremely slow 5400 Toshiba hard drive so a fresh install made the most sense anyways. That was a good decision because now it runs a 100% better. SSD and no bloatcrap made this laptop a lot happier.

I also threw in a 4 GB DIMM to replace the 2 GB DIMM Asus ships this system with. Apparently, the first 4 GB of your 6 GB of memory is bolted to the motherboard. So you get one DIMM slot for expansion. Of course, adding a 4 GB DIMM and replacing the 2 GB DIMM meant that the memory suddenly ran in dual channel instead of single channel. Such a weird design decision... Just to save a few bucks I guess.

There are lots of good points about this system, though. The price is quite low for having a 1 GB discreet Nvidia GPU installed - and although it's not going to play the latest games very well - it still compliments the Intel HD 4000 that comes with the sandy bridge processor. The enclosure is very well built and Asus offers an incredible warranty which I've probably blown now anyways - but if keeping my warranty in tack meant having all the garbageware on my wife's laptop just so they can make a few extra coins to fill their coffers - well - keep the warranty.

YES - it left that bad of a taste in my mouth. There was THAT much. I buy a lot of Asus stuff - over the years I've had many builds which included their motherboards - going back to the Pentium III - lol. One thing I may never do again is purchase something from them which comes with an operating system.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that the bloatware that comes included made you that much of an impact on you.

Don't know why they made 4GB on board. Could be for design to make the notebook that more slimmer.

If you don't use the other ASUS utilities then you can uninstall them. But usually customers would use those utilities for their accessories.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's great

Pros: Fast, easy set-up. Not much bloatware. No problems transferring settings from old XP computer. Nice to have the number pad on the keyboard.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Bought this for husband, as the 9 yr old Dell desktop was getting really tired. It seems to work fine, speedy, nice display. I really liked the touchpad, and he seemed not to have any problems with it. Connected flawlessly to wireless and home network. The keyboard is nice, very responsive and the keys are large enough for bigger hands to use.
