Redefine what mobile gaming means with the ASUS G74 notebook.

Incorporating devastating power of Core i7 2630QM and GeForce GTX 560M, the G74 powerhouse endows you with desktop-comparable gaming experience in a notebook form factor. Full HD 17.3" screen with NVIDIA 3D Vision support brings your entertainment to a new level of realism, complete with THX + EAX 5.0 3D gaming audio technology for lifelike acoustics. 5° incline keyboard and rubber-like palm rests help you breeze through extended operation with less fatigue. Cooling is also taken into serious consideration. An innovatively designed venting system silently cools the entire rig, so you can enjoy your gaming and multimedia with full peace of mind.

  • newegg Hail to the King! The world of portable gaming has a new reigning king. The G74SX is a performance notebook that imposes its will with the combined power of a second generation Intel Core i7 CPU and NVIDIA GTX 560M GPU with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM. A score of P2008 in 3DMark11 and P9180 in 3DMark Vantage takes over the reins as the fastest notebook in the land. Support for DirectX 11 ensures that you’ll not only have the fastest rig in town, but also the ability to play games as they were meant to be seen for a long time.
  • newegg Stealth and Strength Like its predecessor, the G74SX design was inspired by sharp polygonal shapes, but this time inspiration came from the US Navy’s Sea Shadow stealth ship and modern day aircraft carriers. Like the stealth ship, opponents will never know what hit ‘em, and like an aircraft carrier, the G74 has the firepower to shock and awe the competition.
  • newegg True-to-life 3D Video & Audio The G74SX is great for gaming, but its hardware is serious business. It offers the best 3D ecosystem for PCs, offering 3D content creation and editing. It’s powered with NVIDIA 3D Vision, so games, photos and movies are all able to be enjoyed like never before. There’s also the ability to output the G74SX to a 3D TV, so you can enjoy 3D entertainment from the living room. Pair that up with THX + EAX 5.0 3D gaming audio technology, and together they make the G74 not only a great gaming notebook, but also a hub for multimedia entertainment.
  • newegg Get Comfy Gaming is something to be enjoyed, so why not be more comfortable for extended gaming sessions? Fatigue will be a thing of the past, thanks to the G74’s 5° incline keyboard designed to provide a better ergonomic angle, as well as super comfortable rubber-like palm rests that’s easy on the palm and wrist. There’s also more space between the keyboard and number pad, so it more resembles a desktop keyboard.
  • newegg Blow It Out the Rear The harder you work, the more heat you generate. A computer is no different, and with the amount of power in the G74SX, some serious cooling is needed. A unique venting design pulls air from underneath the notebook, cooling the system down, then vents it through the rear, keeping hot air away from the user and reducing ambient noise for prolonged gaming.

1 out of 5 eggsDef not worth the price

Pros: On paper this laptop is a beast and it plays all games very well.

Cons: I payed alot of money for this laptop and its sad it cant even do basic functions correct. As crazy as this may sound i cant type on this laptop. When i type continuously the cursor jumps all over the place. Also the mousepad driver doesnt work no matter what driver i install. Worse of all when i have contacted tech support, they are of no help what so ever. They tell me to reinstall the same driver over and over again and dont understand it just doesnt work. I really regret buying this thing and hope that Asus can get there act together.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry that you have had issues with your computer's touch pad. If I may, I would like to help.

The issues that you are describing are can be caused by several different factors. If you have have installed the touch pad driver/ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities, and the problem persists, it is possible that it could be hardware related.

Please send me your laptop's serial number along with any other troubleshooting steps that you have tried to my email, cl-mark@asus.com. I am sure we can find a fix for the computer's touch pad issue.

Regards,

Mark

3 out of 5 eggsFast. But DOA in 2 mos

Pros: Fast. Decent price for performance. Lot's of features. Did Everything I threw at it Happily. Uber Amounts of RAM.

Cons: Died is less than 2 months. Turned on, booted to windows and shut off. Bad battery life. Heavy, Original Install slow. Ram sticks installed as 3x 4GB (not 2x 4 + 2x2GB). Huge PSU, Keyboard hard to type on, trackpad hard to use

Other Thoughts: I am RMA'ing this after getting the extended warranty and newegg messed up bad. They applied the warranty wrong and told me it will take at minimum over 24 hours to get back to me to see what can be done to fix it. In the meantime the laptop won't turn on, and I need to do work. Newegg slowed me down and after 21 days of just fighting to get the warranty (they messed up even selling it to me and applying a discount) they messed me over again by not doing it right. Technically the laptop that is a brick doesn't have warranty from the warrant's perspective. great, now what? Waiting to hear back from them..

5 out of 5 eggsI'm Impressed

Pros: Great overall quality, video card is awesome, screen is great, keyboard feel is good and even the touchpad isn't bad (though I always use a mouse). Back-lit keyboard is a nice addition. The HD is 7200 RPM and while it is the biggest bottleneck in the system, it performs decently. I will be upgrading the boot drive to SSD in the future and moving the 500GB drive to the second drive bay.

Cons: I honesty haven't found any yet. I have had the left shift key stick in the down position but that may just be this particular unit and it has only happened once (but in the middle of a game which caused me some issues). Hopefully it doesn't become an issue. Some might find the weight and sheer size of this beast a con, but this is considered a desktop replacement so you should know what you are getting. Still very portable and that's all I wanted.

Other Thoughts: I have been buying budget laptops in the $500 range with discrete graphics and while I could play games in the low resolution settings, I was always eyeing a true gaming rig. This unit has delivered wonderfully! I hate the cost of new gaming machines so finding this one that is slightly dated yet fully capable was great! It did ship with dated drivers and when the ASUS Live Update updated them, they were still from like March of 2011. For a gaming rig that is way too old. However, I was able to load the very latest Nvidia drivers myself with no issues. Be sure to select the "clean install" box though when installing.

I rarely give 5 star ratings, even for good products, but this one deserves it!

The last few laptops I have purchased have all been refurbs and I have yet to be disappointed. This one came looking brand new without even a smudge on it.

For the price you simply can't find a better gaming laptop!

4 out of 5 eggsHuge, works, slight annoyance

Pros: Huge screen, cheap, fast. Bluray reader, several ports, wonderful screen, very good keyboard, and massive amounts of ram, fast HDD, fast CPU, fast GPU, lots of VRAM, backlit keyboard. UEFI in bios, but not enabled (you can enable it). Backlit keyboard. HDMI + VGA as well as Gigabit and wifi.

Cons: HDD carrier is there, but no cable/board. Expensive parts can be found, but ASUS for a refurb could've included that if they included the metal carrier. Model number on cover does not match. Bloatware galore. Took 5 minutes to startup first time after setup. Touchy-trackpad. No palm check. One USB 3.0 port, others are 2.0

Other Thoughts: So I got the laptop and looked at the cover. First, the model number came out as G74SX-V3G. not the same model I ordered. It is indeed the XT1 model, but the cover plate must've been pulled from another model. The laptop looks brand new, the battery is. The bloatware is annoying, but I am doing a clean install with an SSD. The HDD plate cover is there for the second drive, but no HDD board, or even the cable. The adapter port is there about the 1st HDD. Took a while to startup after the first reboot. I also was concerned it didn't have UEFI. I can indeed confirm it does have UEFI. Also there is RAID in the bios on this. So you can get the other model's RAID advantage. The laptop came in at 13.5lbs with power brick and battery. No instructions in refurb, not discs (you make your own). The software does see DVD+R DL discs as a make-your-own option. Some restore makers only burn the 4.7 discs on 9GB discs. This does see Dual-Layer as Dual-layer. 6 discs down to 4. Takes a while for it to modify the image (30 minutes) before burning.

Keep in mind this is a DESKTOP replacement. Don't use it on your laptop. It will be hot, but it also prevents breathing for vents. it is a beast. Lay out 12 CD/DVDs and that's the footprint. Powerbrick is 150 Watts (!) and is huge. half the size of a 10" Netbook for footprint. heavy as all get out too.

Gonna throw a 256GB SSD I got on sale and max the RAM. $17 for a 4GB RAM stick will max it. The laptop had no scratches or anything. Screen is good. it's not matte, but it doesn't have glare. 3GB VRAM is plenty for any game for textures but the GPU is going to be the hinderance. For a $999 laptop, it beats all laptops in it's price range. Also, newegg enabled $119 2-year warranty 2 hours after I purchased. called newegg several days later, they lowered the price of one out there and refunded to bring the warranty.

Also, the BIOS is nice. Gonna love the gaming performance, plus Virtual machine experience. Core i7 does really good overclocking, consistantly does 2.8GHz on 2 cores when it can. Disables/Parks 2 cores when only doing simple tasks. Not tried battery life yet. Simple box (brown) is what it came in. The battery was kinda bouncing around. Plastics on this is heavy and feels durable. Laptop does not feel cheap. neither does PSU. Very good weight (good components) compared to lighter/cheaper PSUs which burn out. Also the HDD setup for the cable and adapter will cost around $45 on us.estore.asus.com (Asus site) if you need it. I might spring for it.
